RTÉ's acclaimed Easter Rising drama from 1966 is coming back to TV screens

Many people have been calling for the show to be reshown.

RTÉ - IRELAND’S NATIONAL PUBLIC SERVICE MEDIA / YouTube

FIFTY YEARS AFTER it was first shown, RTÉ’s revolutionary Easter 1916 drama Insurrection is to be rebroadcast.

The eight-part drama told the story of the Rising in a real-time TV news report style and was a hugely ambitious project for the station at the time.

Insurrection was written by acclaimed playwright Hugh Leonard and featured well-known actors from 1966.

Video and audio footage of the show was restored in 2007 and will be broadcast again on consecutive nights starting from 18 March.

It’s also planned that Insurrection will be screened in the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield as part of RTÉ’S 1916 commemorations.

Brid Dooley, head of RTÉ Archives, says they are very pleased that the work that went into restoring the show will now finally be seen.

We are delighted to bring this beautifully restored programme to audiences 50 years after it was first created. Our restoration project for Insurrection which was completed in 2007 involved painstaking picture and audio restoration work by RTÉ’s expert archives conservation staff and Windmill Lane post production studios.

Insurrection was made just four years after RTÉ began broadcasting but it had an anduring success. During the broadcast of RTÉ’s recent Rebellion drama, many people asked for the show to be aired again.

    Herp derp.

People are entitled to comment on a story in order to question its relevance, it doesn’t mean they are closet Green Party cheerleaders or anything.

Given the greens (and Sinn Feinn for that matter) views against fracking in Ireland I’m curious if people will be dumb enough to mindlessly support fracking just to spite the greens?

I just wonder whether anyone who commented has any idea of the Green Party policies or principles (without googling them!) ?
