Luxury cars and €30k in cash seized in crackdown targeting Kinahan cartel

The family home of Regency Hotel shooting victim David Byrne was also searched during the operation.

First published: 12.20pm

GARDAÍ SEIZED OVER €30,000 in cash and 35 vehicles in dawn raids targeting the Kinahan crime cartel in the Crumlin area of Dublin today.

Jeeps, BMWs, Mercedes cars, a motorbike estimated to be worth around €35,000 and other high-end vehicles were seized during the early morning operation, which targeted a car business linked to the family and at least 11 private residences.

The family home of former cartel associate David Byrne, who was shot dead in the Regency Hotel in Dublin last month, was among the locations searched by officers.

The raids were concentrated on a number of houses on and close to Raleigh Square, where Byrne’s family lives.

Armed gardaí from the emergency response unit assisted officials from Revenue and the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) with the searches, which began at around 6am.

Personnel from six other garda units – including the drugs and organised crime bureau and special detective unit – were also involved in the operation.

The raids are connected to a long-standing CAB probe into the financial activities of the Spain-based Kinahan gang.

In an update on the operation this evening, the Garda Press Office confirmed 18 separate locations had been raided.

A number of professional offices were searched, the force said – including those of a solicitor and an accountant.

Cash, vehicles and ”a number of items of jewellery which are believed to be of considerable value” were seized.

The operation has now been completed.
