THE 1916 PROCLAMATION, first read out on the steps of Dublin’s GPO by Padraig Pearse on Easter Monday 100 years ago, has been read once more at the same spot during today’s commemorations.

With Captain Peter Kelleher of the Irish Defence Forces as reader, the re-reading of the proclamation was an impassioned, emotive affair.

The initial reading of the proclamation, drafted primarily by Pearse and James Connolly, immediately preceded the week-long events of the Easter Rising.

Up to 600,000 people are expected in and around Dublin over the course of today and tomorrow as the celebrations of the Rising’s centenary kick fully into gear.

Brave men and women, but we cannot forget their families who know each time their loved one goes out on a rescue that they may not come home. Not your average job.
