Michaella McCollum's interview on RTÉ divided opinions last night

Everyone was talking about the interview last night, here’s what they were saying.

MICHAELLA MCCOLLUM’S INTERVIEW was heavily criticised by many viewers last night with some angered that the drugs mule was getting air time on RTÉ.

During the interview, the 23-year-old said she is a good person who made a decision in a “moment of madness”.

I’m not a bad person..I want to demonstrate that I’m a good person.

McCollum was jailed along with Scottish woman Melissa Reid after being arrested at Lima Airport in August 2013, having been found with a large quantity of cocaine in food packets inside their luggage.

The drugs smuggler from Dungannon was freed from a Peru jail on Thursday but she may have to stay in the country for the remaining six years of her parole.

In the interview last night McCollum said she understood the potential consequences of what could have happened if the drugs had reached Europe.

“I probably would have had a lot of blood on my hands … I potentially could have filled Europe full of a lot of drugs.

I could have potentially killed a lot of people, not directly but I could have caused a lot of harm to people.

Many viewers of the show criticised the interview for being rehearsed and also took issue with RTÉ giving airtime to a drugs smuggler.

However, some viewers took to Twitter to express their support for the 23-year-old:

Spot on!!! Can’t believe all the sympathy she is getting! It’s as if she has been the victim of some massive miscarriage of justice or something! She made a conscious decision to commit a very very serious crime for personal gain! But cos she’s a pretty middle class girl, it was a just a “mistake”! BS!!

Looking at and observing Twitter last night she was not getting lots of sympathy. There were very few tweeting support regardless of how it is portrayed in this report and other media outlets.

What a waste of licence payers money by RTE on this rubbish. No hard questions for her, We heard what a hell hole the prison was and how tough it was yet we saw no signs of it last night. She looked good and was well groomed. She sounded as if she had her answers well rehearsed and came across as insincere.

Her message is exactly that she was reckless and would warn other teens and other people off doing what she did. RTE broadcast her story because it news worthy .
Today parents are sometimes afraid to say no to their little darlings whom grow up making mistakes. A parent job is to prepare their child to cope and accept they cannot have every thing in life unless it worked for.

I was actually impressed she admitted to the whole thing. Okay she’s clearly looking for sympathy and trying to do a bit of a PR exercise but so what. She obviously “partied” hard and got involved in something she shouldn’t have. I love the way everyone is moaning about her being on telly and yet ye all watched it!! I was fully aware that she’s trying to monetize her situation but I was still interested in what she had to say and how she came across. I mean she clearly chanced her arm and didn’t get away with it and paid the price. It played out like a movie and the media have been interested from day dot so don’t know what the big hullaballoo is over now. She’s free to do what she wants now, well not quite but nearly.

It wasn’t a moment of madness, though, was it? It wasn’t as if she was caught, realised she’d made a horrible mistake and dealt with the consequences. No. This happened:

“THE FAMILY OF Michaella McCollum Connolly, the woman being held in Peru on suspicion of drug trafficking, say they are “shocked” and “distressed”.

However, in a statement issued on their behalf by their solicitor Peter Madden they said they “are confident that Michaela (sic) will be exonerated”.

“I spoke to Michaela last night and she emphasised that she denied that she was guilty of any offence. She is well. She is not on hunger strike. She is finding it difficult to cope with the current situation, so far from home, but is optimistic,” added Madden.”

So much didn’t add up and was total lies, trying to play the victim when clearly she knew exactly what she was doing and wanted the money, she was 20 not 12! what a joke to even interview her!

She is still under parole and has the option to spend the remainder of her sentence in Peru or come back to Belfast and go to prison for the remaining three years. Melissa Reid has chosen the latter option and plans are underway for her deportation to a Scottish prison.
The interview may have seemed unsatisfactory last night as Michaela was only allowed answer so much under the restrictions of her parole.

I’m glad she is out. Nobody should be kept in a confined space for the rest of their lives for transporting chemicals from one point on a map to another. If you own nothing else in this world you own your own meat. If someone wants to take cocaine or any other drug as a personal, biological freedom they should be allowed. You either believe in total autonomous personal freedoms like this or you don’t. My body, not yours. The violence that befalls innocent people is largely as a result of the actual illegality of the trade. As far as personal destruction goes if someone is dense enough to ruin their life because of cocaine then you have to question that persons worth. Do you lock hands and block off licenses and hold the staff there accountable for the far greater sum of people who drive their lives into figurative and literal ditches?

You don’t? Why? Why is one chemical choice different from another because of an arbitrary law that isn’t founded on any sort of scientific or sociologically sound reasons?

The judicial framework for her arrest should not have even existed in the first place. Hence the media attention on her should not have existed. Hence you wouldn’t have had to have your breakfast ruined by the awful sight of a young woman on a television screen saying stuff you have the freedom not to listen to. Who cares if she’s out? Who cares if you saw a Capri-Sun in her cell and that’s a luxury? What actually is it to you?

Why are you letting this affect your day? She’s a bit of a dope. She played against the system and got caught. It’s a non story.

Stu: I don’t really have a problem with drugs and the choices people make, I’ve made some choices in the past myself. My issue is that, as it stands, the drug industry is built on misery, exploitation and violence. There are arguments for legalisation that I’m in favour of but the current status quo means that this girl was aiding a criminal gang, involved in violence, intimidation and more, for a quick paycheque. Maybe she got herself in trouble with them as a naive youngster but she’s an adult and knew that the people she was working for were rotten. She’s served her time and I would be in favour of leaving her alone were she remorseful, but you don’t come out of something like this giving interviews unless you’re only sorry you got caught.

Cathriona – you’re engaging in a logical fallacy. If somebody’s child is taking drugs the first place I’d look is the parents and why their child has made that choice. The drug mule or dealer or whoever bears some responsibility but they don’t consume the drug – the user does so consider that from a cause & effect perspective. And also cocaine is taken almost entirely by adults who are old enough to make that decision. Blaming a drug mule for the prevalance of cocaine is a waste of time – if it’s not her it will be some other poor unfortunate who gets it to the market. Maybe start with the governments who turn a blind eye or actively participate in the manufacture and export of cocaine from their territories.

A few short years ago, Pat Kenny had as a guest on the Late Late Show, one General Mike Jackson, a retired British Army General who was in command in Derry on Bloody Sunday. A man who has the blood of 14 innocent Derrymen on his hands. He was no doubt well paid for his appearance, he was treated like royalty, was allowed to promote his new book, Pat made sure not to ask him about Bloody Sunday, and the audience giddily applauded him.

How many of those complaining about the McCollum interview were as vocal about RTE interviewing Jackson?

Pat Kenny didn’t ask Mike about that lie either. Again, to those condemning RTE for the McCollum interview, did you also condemn RTE for interviewing Mike Jackson?

Again, Doc. I’d formulate a proper reply to most people, but I think it would be wasted on someone like yourself who in the space of one week on here, claimed that the Easter Rising was part of the Home Rule movement, that the Easter Rising had a mandate, and where you called guerrilla warfare “cowardly shooting from the ditches” while having Michael Collins as your profile picture. Classic stuff.

I feel sorry for her. Not because she was a stupid young girl, not because she went to jail, not because of her new clean-cut image, and not because of the interview. I feel sorry for her because she was incredibly stupid and it’s an awful way to begin your life.

Regardless of her reasons for doing it, whether it was the cold hard cash or coercion, or a combination of the two, she made a very dumb mistake and has paid for it with being branded for life.

She’s done some (presumably very uncomfortable) time and it’s dealt with. I can understand people being frustrated by her doing an interview but maybe she feels that she needs to get her side of the story across so people might accept her contrition? She has to live somewhere when she gets out of Peru – presumably in Ireland or the UK as who’d have a convicted drug mule? Maybe she’s learned some spanish and can hide out in Spain for a while but then she might want to stay far away from the crowd she fell in with in the first place. So she would want to show she has no intention of getting mixed up drug cartels, as locals might run her out of town.

As for the people commenting on her making money with book deals etc, what would you do? Do you think she’ll get a job in Dunnes? Will she get a place in university or college? Will she get a loan to start her own business? Will she get a mortgage?

If I were in her shoes and I was presented with an opportunity to sell my story I definitely would, to get together a small few quid to buy a small house, maybe start a small business and live a very sheltered quiet and not-extravagant life.

Also, maybe some young girl who has read the story might be wary after reading her story.

People love to kick a person when they’re down. She was stupid, and paid a hefty price for her crime.

Let’s share out the abuse – there’s enough to go round! First, sack the “interviewer”. What a sad excuse for a
journalist. In what might be considered a scoop – albeit a little one – he managed not to ask a single probing
    question.

How did the drugs mule support herself during her month’s stay in Ibiza? She alluded to the fact that she didn’t
have money, so where/how did she live? She hinted that her escape from N. Ireland was linked to sectarianism.
Over the past 20+ years I have only heard of one reason for people being run out of town – drug dealing. How
much was she set to earn had her venture gone undetected? In answer to “Why did you agree to do it?” she
would only say, “I was naive.” And she got away with that non-answer. Did she do it because she wanted to get
rich quick? Because she wanted to make a quick buck on the back of others’ misfortunes?
I can agree with the notion that we all make mistakes, we’re all fallible etc. But what grates on me is playing the
“naive, innocent” card. I know a few fairly naive 20 year-olds. Their naivety would have stopped them heading
off to Spain (or any country) on their own with no accommodation, friends, job etc.
She has served a sentence of sorts. But she still wants a free ride.Leave it at that.

Somebody has got their claws into her already, gave her a glamorous makeover, groomed her for the interview ( I believe she was handed the questions in advance, had the answers written for her and learned her lines). The groomer/s are waiting in the wings for the paid interviews and hoping to ghost write a book and even a screenplay. Without doubt Michaela McCollum Connolly is going to make a lot of money out of her actions. Disgraceful.

I suspect this PR exercise is about getting her home, while effectively giving her a second chance. Publicly repent and possibly reveal all about the operations to the Peruvians to grease the home-coming efforts by the Irish State. I can’t help but think of all the poor and less fortunate ladies still in the same Peruvian prison that are not given a second chance, probably more deserving of one too.

She showed extremely poor judgement, wanting to make a quick and easy buck on the abject misery of others. I’m not convinced she’s more deserving of a second chance than many others, however, I do hope she makes something good out of it to the benefit of others.

People seem very disgruntled about this interview. My guess is people were shocked by her appearance. I would envisage a less severe public critique of her is she looked liked shit and was very emotionally distressed. There’s a strong negativity bias at play here. Hopefully she will move on with her life and positively contribute to society.
