Mac users are fine, but if you have QuickTime on Windows, you're leaving yourself open to problems. Michael Wyszomierski/Flickr

If you still have Apple QuickTime on your PC, you need to uninstall it asap

Newly discovered flaws and no more security updates makes it a significant risk to you.

APPLE’S QUICKTIME might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you want to play videos, but if it’s still lying dormant on your PC, you should uninstall it as soon as possible.

Security firm Trend Micro discovered two major security flaws with QuickTime on Windows. Both could put users at risk if they end up visiting a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The issue isn’t the flaws, but the fact that Apple is no longer issuing security updates to the PC version. QuickTime on Mac is still supported so Mac users don’t need to worry about this.

While there have been no examples of anyone exploiting these flaws, Trend Micro is recommending people to uninstall it from their PC as soon as they can so they can avoid any future headaches.

The process for uninstalling it is the same as any other program on your PC. Going into Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Find the program, select it and then click uninstall to remove it.

If you still need a program to play video files, it’s better to install something like VLC Media Player to do that.

Quicktime for Windows was originally required for iTunes if you wanted to play media files on the service, but recent versions abandoned it for more modern versions.

Quicktime, now there’s a blast from the past. Along with that other piece of crapware called RealPlayer (which later tried to become a DRM-infested music service)

You should be aware that when you install iTunes you are installing a suite of software which includes QuickTime, Bonjour, Apple mobile device support, Apple software updater and Apple application support. If you’re wondering why your machine is slowing down, you might want to consider disabling some of those also.

QuickTime is used by animators for playblasting their shots. It’s useful for reviewing their work frame by frame. “Keyframe MP” is a recommended alternative apparently. I haven’t tried it yet because I’ve just uninstalled QuickTime.
