Hoax device discovered in garden causes bomb scare in Dublin

The incident unfolded late last night.

A DEVICE THAT caused a bomb scare in Dublin last night was declared a hoax.

Gardaí are investigating the incident.

The device was discovered at around 9.30pm in the garden of a home in Whitestown Park, Mulhuddart. Gardaí were called to the scene and put a safety cordon in place.

The army bomb disposal team was called and the device was deemed not viable.

No arrests were made and an investigation is underway.

In a statement this morning, the Defence Forces said:

Last night, An Garda Síochána requested the assistance of the Army Bomb Disposal Team after a suspect device was found in a residential part of Mulhuddart, Dublin. On inspection the device was declared a hoax.

They added:

All items of an evidential nature have been handed over to An Garda Síochána for forensic analysis.

It’s understood some homes were evacuated while the device was examined.

Bit of clarity wouldn’t go amiss. Was it a hoax device intended to be confused for a bomb or a kids backpack which got blew up? Were the gardai overly cautious or was this a real attempt at causing disruption and fear? These are basic journalistic questions, with no answers here as usual.

Gone Feisin, the incident is under investigation – it isn’t for me to say whether gardaí were ‘overly cautious’ or what the motivations of the people/person involved in this was.

That would be speculation, which isn’t part of the job.

While it looks that way it seems to be more important to try this than to find out more details. 24 hours later and still no more information.

Yes because the establishment really want to scare away the tens of thousands attending a commemoration in somebody’s garden in an estate in whitestown, west Dublin.
