GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 Five minutes, five stories, five o’clock…

EVERY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five big news stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #PHOENIX PARK Ciaran Lane, who knocked down and killed toddler Venessa Kiatka in the Phoenix Park last year, has been jailed for five years. The court heard he had drunk vodka and taken cocaine before the incident.

2. #LUAS Luas operators Transdev say they have had positive talks with workers – but not with drivers yet. The news follows yesterday’s cancelling of a planned 48-hour work stoppage by Luas drivers.

3. #COURTS Certain aspects of the law governing suspended sentences in Ireland have been ruled unconstitutional. The result is that emergency legislation will likely be required to deal with the problem.

4. #GERMANY A woman suspected of being locked away by her mother for years has been found by police in Rosenheim. She has an intellectual disability and was discovered when officers carried out an eviction order.

5. #OFF THE BOX Around 10,000 Irish homes had their TV connection shut off today after a transmission network was switched off last night. Virgin Media was up until last night the provider of the service, but the licence has expired.
