PHOTOS: Queen Elizabeth's reign over the last six decades

The British monarch turns 90 today.

TODAY MARKS QUEEN Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday.

The monarch has reigned for 64 years, during which time the British empire has changed dramatically.

There have been 12 prime ministers over the course of her reign.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, known as Lilibet, was born on 21 April 1926, with no expectation of being queen.

Her fate dramatically changed when her childless uncle Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American.

Princess Elizabeth’s father inherited the crown as George VI and she suddenly became heir to the throne.

On her 21st birthday, she vowed to spend her life serving her country, but this promise was put to the test sooner than she could have imagined.

Her father died suddenly in 1952 at the age of 56, making Elizabeth queen at the age of 25.

She was by then married to Philip, a distant cousin, whom she has described as “my strength and stay”.

They have four children: Charles (born in 1948) Anne (1950), Andrew (1960) and Edward (1964).

Here are photos from each of the six decades she has reigned in:

Charles (67) is increasingly taking her place at public engagements but experts agree she will most likely hold on to the end and not follow her Dutch and Spanish royal peers by abdicating.

To mark her milestone birthday, the Royal family posed for a four-generation portrait featuring the Queen, her son Prince Charles, her grandson William and her great-grandson George.

My biggest issue is that the article writes about the British Royal Family as if they somehow belong to us, I don’t remember any pictorial essays on the Dutch Royal Family or many other monarchs. We are a Republic, our constitution does not recognise heraldic titles. Time our media began to realise that. I wish the British Monarch well on her birthday.

Ireland was a part of the Union not a colony. OK some didn’t like that either, but we were deeper in the system than we care to believe.

Think you will find those living in the UK had little choices at that time either as it was a time of autocracy everywhere in Europe, no free handouts like we have today, then add the worst communications conceivable, and you have a recipe for disaster. It’s so easy call to critic with the comfort of modern standards. Imaging three of the largest churches in Limerick costing millions in those were built on the cusp of famine times, where did that money come from? ? ? They say from the locals, so what happened to distribution to the poor? Think most of the issues between the Islands were religious based and the result of a Vatican sponsored Jihad where Phillip of Spain put a price on the head of Eliz1 and every chancer wanted a pop. The rest is history. Please remember the British included the Scots the Irish the Welsh and English at many levels, to deny that would also be a folly.

By all accounts he was a relatively obscure gentleman farmer at first before the shenanigans of Charles I precipitated the Civil War. If Charles hadn’t been such a knob maybe he wouldn’t have become one. He was as much a product of his times as anyone. The thing that tickles me is that a man with his attitudes to monarchy would probably find much common ground with someone with the attitudes of say, you, military history aside.

Yeah about those atrocities, you know Drogheda, you know Cromwellian forces breached the walls of the town and by the standards of the day the garrison would be expected to surrender but this garrison, which was mainly made up of English Catholic settlers didn’t and were put to the sword. The Irish, the actual Irish in Drogheda lived in a ghetto and were spared.

In Wexford his troops ran into trouble with another garrison who had supposedly surrendered, but hadn’t, again they were mainly English Catholic settlers (and monarchists of course).

Cromwell actually had a reputation as being a merciful military leader, by the standards of his day, and when towns and garrisons surrendered and kept their word, in such circumstances he’d hang his won men for plunder murder or rape. Kept them disciplined.

And he went through Ireland in 9 months, bit of a whirlwind tour, putting down rebellion and crushing monarchists, went mainly for the officers of those garrisons because he knew that’d encourage the garrisons in the next town to surrender and he could get on. Why? Because he wanted to go home.

Look into the history, you might be surprised, don’t take my word for it. I’m English, you can’t trust us. ;P

And don’t think he’s particularly favored historically by the English, because by and large, we don’t like him either. It’s still not entirely clear where his head is.

    Damocles,
I’m not sure Ireland backed anyone per se.
English monarchists turned up and claimed Ireland for this or that.

Interesting, that it was other English people Cromwell slaughtered.

I think throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, before Irish history was allowed to be formally taught, people relied on oral stories and Cromwell always stood out as a sociopath.

Also, remember he brought another gruesome plantation – to hell or to connacht.

Cromwell’s definition of republicanism merely means no monarch or absolute monarch, nothing to do with equality.

Leo/Diarmuid/tommy Mac anything is possible, look what happened to your beloved ‘protestant
state for a protestant people’ and now you have people like Peter Robinson telling the likes of you that you need to reach out to the Irish community in order to protect the union.

It will be hilarious if it is your motherland Scotland that brings down the union.

diarmuid/Leo/Tommy Mac it must be a huge relief to Liz that the psni refuse to bring your former cultural ambassador, former Nth Belfast/ Nth Antrim uvf commander turned supergrass Gary Haggarty before a court on the 212 charges laid against him including 5 murder charges.
Those establishment figures who used the Kincora boys home as a brothel must be protected at all cost.

Well done The Journal for giving us another useless article on this vile woman. What has the life of this woman to do with us? This foreign, so-called queen, a woman who has sponged off her own people all her life should be up before the International Courts of Justice, but good old West Brit Journal goes down on it’s knees to honour her. Shame on you

@tommy macdonagh, I wouldn’t say Ireland loves Lizzie, tolerate and bemused with a smidgen of curiosity maybe. Personally I think the royals are an expensive waste of space who have outlived their usefulness, and I’m saying that as a Brit.
