Here's what's happening this weekend to mark the 1916 centenary

The GAA, Conradh na Gaeilge and the President will all be involved in events.

THE MAIN STATE commemorations to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising took place over the Easter weekend.

However, many events are also happening this weekend – the calendar centenary of the Rising.

Here are some of the highlights taking place today and tomorrow.

It’s not an exhaustive list so if you’re aware of an event taking place in your area let us know in the comments.

Saturday

The Maynooth 1916 Centenary Committee will commemorate the walk by 15 volunteers from Maynooth in Co Kildare to Dublin and their participation in the GPO garrison.

A bilingual seminar organised by Conradh na Gaeilge to commemorate the women who were active in the cultural and social movements that changed Irish society in the early 20th century will take place today.

The second day of a seminar celebrating celebrating multilingualism in Ireland is taking place in NUI Galway.

Meanwhile, TG4 will air a black comedy drama, Wrecking the Rising, which imagines an alternative 1916 Rising, at 9.30pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Sunday

Tomorrow’s official state event will take place at Arbour Hill in Dublin.

A remembrance mass will be held at the Church of the Sacred Heart at 10am. It will be broadcast live on RTÉ One, RTÉ Radio 1 Extra and Longwave 252.

President Michael D Higgins and members of the government will be in attendance, as will relatives of those executed following the Rising.

The adjacent military cemetery is the resting place for 14 of the executed leaders of the Rising including Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly and Major John McBride.

A number of famous faces and community groups are set to attend a Reclaim 1916 event tomorrow afternoon. A march will begin at Merrion Square at 2pm and make its way to the GPO where actor Adrian Dunbar will host a festival of music, dance and readings.

Panti Bliss, Stephen Rea, Fionnuala Flanagan, Donal Lunny, Damien Dempsey and Frances Black are all expected to take part.

The organising committee has said parade participants, including representatives of Ireland’s new communities, will highlight the vision of the 1916 Proclamation for religious and civil liberties and equal rights for all. "Travellers, residents of Direct Provision, disability and women’s groups and Clery’s workers will underline the work still needed to achieve this," a statement noted.

The GAA will mark the centenary in Croke Park tomorrow. The Allianz Football League finals will be followed by Laochra – a live event celebrating our national identity.

Thomas Traynor, who served under Eamon de Valera during Easter 1916, will be remembered in his native Carlow at an event in Tullow tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a civic reception will take place in Sligo tomorrow. This will include a re-enactment of the reading of the Proclamation and the unveiling of a specially-commissioned memorial to the county's participants in the Rising.

You missed out the open air concert, pageant and march on O’Connell Street on at 2pm. Pretty sure that was deliberate though.

Is that the party political event organised by a party which still has difficulty in participating in an event involving the fior Olgaigh na hEireann or in trying to pretend that it has an organic link to 1916 – which is hard as its a dissident group of a splinter group of an anti democratic group of an organisation established to advance home rule on the austro Hungarian empire model retaining the monarchy.

I don’t know if they are holding an event but the biggest one in Dublin this weekend is being organised by the National Graves Association.

I’m going up to Dublin for the weekend and really looking forward to a good buzz tomorrow. Damo, Panty Bliss, 2,500 Sinn Féin Árd Fheis delegates in town from Donegal to Wexford and from Antrim to Kerry,. Tomorrow promises to be a great, fun-filled and memorable Citizens Celebration of 1916. I’ll be finishing up after the Parade to Glasnevin with tasty pints in the Grave Diggers. Can’t wait!

What party holds the mayorship of the two biggest cities in the state, or it the third largest party at local level and at national level, or has the most MEPs from Ireland. Talk about being clueless! I suppose FF don’t recognise the state either seeing as they held an event in Arbour Hill last weekend, go back to bed ffs!
