The East Link toll bridge. Sam Boal

Dublin's least attractive Liffey bridge will get a new name this week

The bridge is to be named after Tom Clarke – one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

DUBLIN’S EAST LINK toll bridge will be renamed tomorrow in memory of one of the leaders of 1916.

The toll bridge – by now an essential part of the city’s infrastructure, even if it’s by no means the most attractive bridge over the Liffey – is the last on the river, before it enters Dublin Bay.

Though it’s known as the East Link or the ‘toll bridge’ Dublin City Council says there are no records of it ever being officially named.

The bridge was built in 1984 under a deal between Dublin Corporation, Dublin Port and National Toll Roads. It passed into the control of Dublin City Council at the end of last year.

It was announced in March that it would be named in honour of Tom Clarke - one of the chief organisers of the Rising and the first signatory of the Proclamation.

President Michael D Higgins will unveil a plaque naming the bridge the ‘Tom Clarke Bridge’ tomorrow morning.

The ceremony will coincide with the centenary of his execution.

A Defence Forces colour party will be in attendance, and a Dublin Fire Brigade piper will provide music for the event, which gets under way at 10.45am.

Yes but they have it you cant turn left onto that bridge from the North Quays to protect the revenue on the toll bridge. You also can’t take a right off the bridge if you want to head to the three arena. It’s all about the money and protecting the toll on a bridge that has been paid for 20 years ago..

Which bridge, Shawn? You have to go all the way down to the custom house. No left turn on Beckett. That little journey takes about 40 mins on a busy morning.

I’m not sure he’d be too happy with that as that bridge and its charge represents screwing the Irish people for a little tax. And probably a brown envelope or two

Was just thinking the same. There have been some odd decisions – keeping that toll, no access to or from the north quays from Beckett bridge, retention of infrastructure that forces two lanes into one …. Tom Clarke might not have wanted to be associated with that mess

This habit of naming bridges after people is just stupid. Either name them after the road that crosses the bridge or after a distinctive landmark beside them. It’s makes it totally confusing for navigation otherwise and the only useful application is a round of name each bridge in a pub quiz.

In relation to NOT turning left on to the Samuel Beckett bridge…always glance across to McCann Fitz opposite Ferryman Pub you sometimes get the GARDA standing on the steps and if you take the the illegal left turn on to the bridge …..they will nab you when you get a cross to them (seen them there many a time waitng)……SOLUTION is if your coming up the north wall quay TURN right at PWC go around the back of the convention centre and left on to guild st and straight across the Samuel Beckett bridge and you have done no wrong. In relation to naming the eastlink to Tom Clark bridge…….I think the man will be turning in his grave(apologies to you Mr Clark you deserve much better acknowledgement than this)……..regardless what they rename it……it will always be the Eastlink.
