Instagram has said goodbye to its polaroid-inspired logo

And it’s been replaced by something quite different.

IF YOU’RE UPDATING apps on your phone today, you may notice a major change with Instagram.

It’s gone from looking like this, the polaroid-inspired design the app has used since it launched in 2010:

instagram old logo

To something more colourful and minimalist:

Instagram new Logo

In fact, its entire suite of apps Layout, Boomerang, and Hyperlapse (remember them?) have also received redesigns and are a bit of a departure from what came before it.

Instagram’s head of design Ian Spalter explained the redesign was done to reflect what Instagram is now, compared to what it was when it started five years ago.

“When Instagram was founded, it was a place to easily edit and share photos,” he said. “Five years later, things have evolved. Instagram is now a diverse community of interests where people are sharing more photos and videos than ever before… and connecting in new ways through Explore”.

The Instagram icon and design was beginning to feel, well… not reflective of the community, and we thought we could make it better.

The app itself has received a redesign too, going for a flatter black and white design across the board instead of the blue it used before. The camera icon in the app itself is no longer blue either, blending in with the other buttons beside it.

Opinions on the redesign have been somewhat mixed – which is always the way whenever a change happens – with some poking fun at the logo’s colour scheme.

Either way, Instagram is sticking with this for the long-run (and you’ll likely get used to it within a week or two anyway) with Spalter saying their “hope is that people will see this app as a new creative spark – something to have fun with and make their own. We’re excited for where this will take us”.

Ya but it still somehow manages to have 10 times less BS than Facebook.

It’s photos of people you hate at the gym and people you hate eating things with avocado in them.

And dogs. Lots of photos of dogs.

Oh oh that place where people pretend they have great bodies and wonderful lives but are really just attention seeking, no real friends, look at me I’m better than you all, lonely people? Ohk I’ve heard about it.

@Alan and The girl, the pictures you see are based on what you post who you follow and pictures you like, so if you are seeing a lot of pictures like that (I don’t) then it says a lot about what you do on instagram

The new logo is rubbish, I bet they paid millions to some design team who spent five minutes coming up with this. Handy work if you can get it I suppose.

Maybe they should change their terms and conditions too so that they stop poaching people’s photographs? http://www.safetyonline.info/?p=680
