'Enough is enough' - Appeals for calm after innocent woman shot in Cork estate

The shooting is believed to be part of a dispute to which the woman was not involved.

GARDAÍ HAVE RECOVERED a firearm as part of searches connected to the shooting of a woman in the north Cork city area on Sunday morning.

The shooting is believed to be part of a dispute to which the woman was not involved.

The young woman has been named locally as Ciara Sheehan (21) and was in a house in the Hollywood Estate when a bullet was fired inside seriously injuring her.

Her injuries are described as serious but she is in a stable condition in hospital.

The gun was discovered in an area of wasteland as part of garda searches of the Knocknaheeny and Holyhill areas.

As investigations are continuing, the Lord Mayor Of Cork has said that he is prepared to act as a go-between if needed to help ensure that violence doesn’t escalate in the apparent dispute.

“First of all, enough is enough, let’s step back from things before they get worse and before someone loses a life,” Councillor Chris O’Leary said this afternoon.

Quite clearly what we’re saying and what the gardaí are saying and will say it again is, ‘Look step back, if there’s an issue here that can be resolved through dialogue let’s go down that route as opposed to people losing lives’.

O’Leary says that he doesn’t know the family personally but that he may be of assistance in helping to prevent a tit-for-tat cycle developing.

I think somebody needs to stand up and say enough is enough. Most people would know me from my community work in the area. Knocknaheeny is a area of the city I’ve worked in for about 30 years.

A man (29) and a woman (22) arrested on Sunday morning following the shooting are still being detained

He is being held at Gurranabraher garda station, while she is at Bridewell garda station.

“resolved through dialogue” ?!? How about resolving it by activating the numerous suspended sentences these s#umbags probably have.

That would impinge on their civil rights, or something.

You wouldn’t believe how light this skumbag gets off! I once witnessed him run blatantly in the direction of the gardai with a machete. The guy has stabbed or instigated the stabbing of more people you could imagine. Yet he still seems to be walking around freely. (Ok he is detained right now) but give it next week and he will be at it again.

He shot someone before as well didn’t he? Plus considering he’s been running a fairly successful drug operation for a few years now without any hassle you’d think he’s giving names to keep himself out of jail

This is what I can’t understand, one party in the previous election promised to get tough on this kind of stuff but no one voted for them!

I’m actually a Sinn Fein supporter but I cannot understand how everyone says they want to get tough on crime but no one votes for the party that says they are going to do it.

A drug dealing thug in a small town near where I grew up got a free rane to terrorise the town for years no one could understand how he wasn’t ever arrested. Local paper investigated this and it turned out everytime he was going to be investigated word came from somewhere to stop it. Turns out he was informing on bigger fish so they let the man do whatever he wanted young lives where ruined!

Apologies I didn’t explain that properly, I was referring to Renua being tough on crime, not Sinn Fein. I’m a Sinn Fein supporter but I recognise that Renua were pretty much the only party talking about crime!

It was actually proven that thia guy was an informant though Dave. I believe it was Waterford drug dealers he was rating on and in turn he got a free pass to supply Kilkenny with heroine over 20 years or more from Castlecomer and use young boys from disadvantaged areas to do the dirt work. Castlecomer is an unemployment black spot but the way

AK47 s on O Connell Street next. They don’t care about anybody. Open spike island and give them a spade and let them survive if they work for it. The Gardai don’t really care as they don’t get supported by the judges or the government. More prisons and no bail.

The right to bail is all but guaranteed under our Constitution (Article 40) except in the following circumstances:
    a) Person is likely to abscond
    b) Person is likely to interfere with witnesses or evidence
    c) PERSON HAS COMMITTED SERIOUS CRIMES WHILST ON BAIL IN THE PAST

I believe a reasonable take on this would be that if a person has ever been convicted of an additional, indictable offense carrying a custodial sentence while on bail they should never, ever, ever be given bail again. It says so, right in our Constitution amended by popular vote less than 20 years ago. It’s time for the State to start standing up for the rights of it’s non-criminal citizens, as specified in the law.

Used to be if the population is threatened by an armed group you send your armed forces after that group to defend your people, we seem to have forgotten that along the way.
Organized criminal gangs that are armed and operating with impunity against the well being of the people are to be treated as enemy forces and dealt with quickly and harshly. We need to enact proper treason laws, declare these types enemies of the state and send the Ranger Wing after them with a shoot to kill policy.

Crime in this country cannot be tackled because we cannot afford to do it. I am guessing but I would say it costs almost as much to keep someone in prison as to provide a hospital bed for your granny. Now go away and work out how many votes would be garnered by your average politician seeking better hospital care as opposed to the one that wants to build more prisons. The only solution is to have a deal with an eastern european country to provide prisons on the cheap and fly the relatives out by Ryanair to visit. The Irish prison officers union would have to be taken on though – has anyone in government the cohonnes for this? I dont think so.
