FINNISH TELECOM EQUIPMENT maker Nokia has said that it plans a global comeback into its former goldmine of handsets and tablets, by licensing its brand to a newly-created Finnish company.
Nokia “will grant HMD Global Ltd. the exclusive global licence to create Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets for the next 10 years,” the world’s former number one handsets company said in a statement.
As part of the process, HMD Global and its Taiwanese partner, FIH Mobile of FoxConn Technology Group, will take over Microsoft’s feature phone business for €310.5 million, which it had bought from Nokia in 2014, the US company said in a separate statement.
Nokia was the world’s top mobile phone maker between 1998 and 2011 but was overtaken by South Korean rival Samsung after failing to respond to the rapid rise of smartphones.
In 2011, it chose to bet on the Windows mobile platform, which proved to be a failure. The new product portfolio will be based on Android.
The Finnish company sold its handset unit to Microsoft in 2014 for some $7.2 billion which dropped using the Nokia name on its Lumia smartphones.
The conditional deal between Microsoft and Nokia’s new brand licensing partners is expected to close in the second half of 2016.
Nokia said the new Finnish company, HMD Global, is a private venture in which Nokia will not hold equity.

Nokia always have one key component better than all others. A good battery.
If the old brick 3310 had a current smartphone battery, it would probably need recharging sometime in 2018.
In fairness, folks, those screens and processors didn’t take much to power.
Lithium ion is what can’t cope with smart-phones and nobody has found a better battery type yet (unless Nokia have something new up their sleeves)
Best phone I ever owned..
Hopefully we’ll see smart phones with batteries that can last a week and that won’t smash when dropped. Let’s hope they’re not a mere shadow of their former selves.

There’s a video from Nokia on their old YouTube account where they hammer a nail into a piece of wood using the screen one of their Lumia phones. Hopefully they keep that kind of ruggedness in their new phones

The dogs on the street know that Nokia should have chosen Android over Windows, they’d still be the biggest and the best if they had..
The batteries were not better – the phones had no features back when a Nokia would last 3 days without charging. Context, FFS.
Nokia cannot make a better battery than Samsung or Apple or LG or Sony – they’re made from the same materials.
A Nokia 130 will hold a charge for two weeks.
Because it doesn’t do anything.
Calls can be made and received, text messages can also be made and received. It can do more than my landline.

I had a 3210 back in the day as an oversight I forgot to bring the charger on holidays the battery lasted an entire week.

If I could have an old 3210 that ran WhatsApp and the other messaging apps that would be the perfect phone.
I was just thinking that about the 6300 I used to have. They were such handy phones.
