LOVE IT OR hate it, Big Brother is going to be on Irish TV screens for the next three years.
TV3 has announced that it’s bought the rights to the broadcast of the UK Big Brother series from this year until 2018.
The deal will also see TV3 and 3e showing Celebrity Big Brother as well as the post-show debate programme Big Brother’s Bit On The Side.
Originally from the Netherlands, the long-running reality show was first broadcast in the UK in 2000 and its format has remained relatively consistent in that time. First broadcast on Channel 4, the show is now produced by the Endemol Shine Group for Channel 5.
Despite the persistent ire directed at the show from non-fans, the programme has been a ratings success for both TV3 and Channel 5.
TV3 first broadcast Big Brother last year with the station saying that it hit a ratings peak of 541,700 during that run.
“Its unpredictable nature makes it compulsive viewing that transfers to impressive ratings,” says TV3′s group managing director Pat Kiely.
The new series of Big Brother will begin on 7 June, four days before the station broadcasts the first of the 22 Euro 2016 football matches it’s showing this summer.
TV3 agreed a sub-licence deal with RTÉ allowing it to show some of the summer football tournament.

It’s actually a great show. The contestants have to manipulate the viewers into liking them and disliking the others. There are so many mind games and tricks. The contestants are highly stressed out all the time. They only ever get a few hours sleep and are starved. There’s a lot of money at stake.

Jack. Yes it can be entertaining but in a very twisted form. But you would have to wonder the mentality of a person who would sign themselves up for this for 2 months of their life to fulfill their dream of being famous. Its not healthy..

Jack spends his life fascinated by what other people are doing. And by people, I mean boring narcissists.
The contestants do tend to be very narcissistic (full of themselves) but I just love the social dynamics and the competition. They all desperately want to win the money but almost no one admits it. It’s all about lying and manipulation. People constantly pretend to hate or love others in there in order to gain advantage. When they leave the show they all just become Facebook friends and never see each other again.
Jack. Yes they are all full of their own importance. And I think you have to be quite clever to go far in the show. But what annoyed me was girls like Jade Goody who was fairly innocent at the time being taken advantage of. She turned it to her own advantage when she came out. But there have been vulnerable people on the show who BB are very careless with

No it’s not. Only TV3′s own productions are (partly) funded by the TV licence. Shows like Big Brother are funded by advertising.
Doesn’t part of the license fee go to fund Saorview, which carries TV3 and 3e?
