Louise McSharry spoke powerfully about body shaming on the Ray D'Arcy Show

The radio presenter spoke about her book and society’s attitude to weight.

BROADCASTER AND JOURNALIST Louise McSharry has had a serious rollercoaster of a few years.

alolllllll

Louise, who is in remission after a battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, spoke about her joy of discovering she is pregnant on the Ray D’arcy show last night–despite the odds of conceiving naturally being against her and husband Gordon due to treatment.

The 2fm presenter is now 24 weeks pregnant, and about to release a memoir documenting everything from her tumultuous childhood, body issues, and feminism, to abandoning education and still ‘making it’.

cover.jpg.rendition.460.707 Penguin Penguin

Despite such happy news, the last few months have also been quite bittersweet.

She spoke to Ray about the recent death of her biological mother, the same day she felt the baby kick for the first time.

The circle of life was put to me in black and white terms, because my biological mother, I got a phone call to say she was going to die in the next few hours, and I had just felt my baby kick for the first time, so it was a stark juxtaposition and made me really think of life, one thing goes and another thing starts.

alouiss

People watching were inspired by her outlook

She also spoke about fat shaming and how she wanted to use her book to help others who might be facing the same struggles accepting their body that she once did.

When I started about writing a book, I started thinking, what do I want a book I wrote to be? I didn’t want it to be ‘oh I had a sad childhood and I had cancer’.
I wanted it to serve a purpose, and for me, my journey with body image has been really difficult. I’m in a good place now, I feel a bit like an evangelist, I want to help people feel better about themselves.

She said the mere thought of being fat and the negative connotations that society puts on it, was “torture” to her.

We live in a world that is absolutely cruel to fat people, fat people’s bodies are up for discussion all the time, people feel entitled to talk about them tell you about it face to face.

Sometimes, she explained, people don’t even know they’re doing it.
If I sit in an office with coworkers and they’re talking about being such a fat cow because they had a takeout for dinner and they’re a size 10, and I’m sitting there a size 20. How am I feeling about my body? What must they think of me if they think they’re disgusting?
A lot of people think fat people should be punished, and they shouldn’t have nice clothes, and they shouldn’t feel good about themselves.

People were just like, YAS

Louise’s book, Fat Chance, is out on June 2.

Most importantly, there will be talk of makeup

On point.

People should never be shamed for being overweight, it’s easy to gain a few pounds, but it should never be normalised or desirable either, any more than smoking or binge drinking. It’s not a good way to be. If it happens, OK, but no one should ever be told it’s the right way to be.

Exactly. I don’t go out telling smokers to quit smoking because of the health effects, and in the same way I wouldn’t ever do such a thing when the problem is food rather than cigs. In a free society it is no business of mine what anyone else does to their body and I don’t see the need to ‘shame’ them.

The problem is normalisation (unfortunately the statistics say that becoming obese is getting more ‘normal’ all the time…). It’s ok to be fat, but it isn’t healthy or desirable.

Just like with smoking. If there were people coming on TV saying that smoking is perfectly fine for you, they’d be branded a looney, for good reason.

What’s fascinating about it. I know many people who were diagnosed with cancer and came through it. I know as many who are overweight and are trying to lose weight. She is using her problems in life to get publicity and keep her career going. Her radio show has lost listeners and this an RTE attempt to make her famous for her sad story. It’s like X-Factor where the saddest story gets audience sympathy and makes good TV ratings.

I think you are being a bit too cynical. I disagree with her body shaming schtick but she battled cancer and lost her mother in one year. That’s a hell of a lot to come through and putting it out there lets other people who are going through the same thing know they aren’t alone.

The only problem I would have is ‘plus sized’ women being used as role models.
If excessive weight gain is a result of a medical condition, that is absolutely understandable. Otherwise you simply should not be grossly overweight given the many many health problems that it causes. Using phrases like ‘big is beautiful’ does not help a situation where obesity is consistently either the result of or cause of health problems.

It has caused me no health problems (yet) thank God but it causes me untold stress and shame. My diet is good. Its crisps and lack of exercise that are my enemies. Sinead, what you need to do is incorporate exercise into your routine. Cycling to work is a great way to exercise, it is functional in that it is your commute, it saves you on transport costs and it is great for your health. It also means you don;t have to go to the gym or go jogging after work. A lot of people don’t exercise because it is a chore that’s hard to get into, but when it;s part of your daily routine it becomes much easier. A decent road bike will have you flying, and after a few weeks it won;t even be a struggle to cycle it. Once you get a bit fitter it becomes something you want to do. I also play drums for an hour a night, because it’s fun and takes loads of energy. But basically exercise is essential, everyone needs to do it.

There is absolutely no magic to it, I dated a girl one time who would be classified as obese. I remember the more I got to known her it was evident that she ate far too much food. I was always respectful but in the end watching her gorge herself repeatedly was just too much. I think if you have a problem with any substance including food you should seek help. Sadly some people dont want to admit that they have an issue and then cry into their pillow at night because ‘society wont accept them’. People who abuse substances have a hard time accepting themselves never mind what anyone else thinks of them. If you are overweight and this comment envokes anger in you then unfortunately you have proven my point

It’s no coincidence there are now 4 pizza joints in my smallish town, and many many more other takeaways of differing kinds. 20 year ago there was just 3 in total. Must be 20 now.

As a society we are totally obsessed with weight. This is especially true of women. In the last 3 months people I barely know or only know to see really, have commented on my weight loss these last few months. All of them women. That’s aside from my wife, sisters, mother, and female cousins. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest, as I’m neither underweight nor overweight, it just fluctuates quite a bit. I can drop 2 stone in a month or two but never drop below 11.5 stone, I then put it back on but never breach 13.5 stone. This happens once a year or so.

If something as simple as that attracts so many comments for a bloke, who generally, have their weight commented on way more than women to their faces as people deem it perfectly ok to tell a guy about his weight where they’d hesitate to tell a woman, then is it any wonder people feel under so much pressure.

Of course the real nub of all of this has to do with sex rather than health. very few people find fat attractive and that’s the real confidence killer. As the weight goes on, the sex life, reduces usually.

Brace yourself for what will be deemed a controversial comment. Her excessive weight likely played a part in her developing cancer. At size 20, her body is overly inflamed putting extra pressure on all her organs, which means it can’t function at an optimum level. Shaming anyone is anyway for their weight is nonsense but lying to them is equally cruel. I say this as a fat person who is currently losing weight. I’ve a way to go before my body can perform at an optimum level but i feel healthier and happier. We should be speaking about healthy and unhealthy bodies, rather than aesthetics and feelings.

Within limits, it is possible to be both obese and fit. Fitness, in the sense of cardio vascular health, is as important as, if not more important, than weight.

Our wrong the negative comments about weight are from women

Every single women’s talk show, fashion show, magazine etc etc is about the physical appearance of women

Kardaishians, Expose, Hello magazine, Loose women the list is endless of women judging and being judged by other women based purely on their looks and/or size

It’s never “and here is Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence”, it’s always and her is the beautiful Jennifer Lawrence and doesn’t she look stunning in that Dior gown, way to go girl”.

Men love women regardless, for every guy that likes size 6 ladies another guy likes size 16 and another one likes size 26. We don’t make comments willy nilly about a girl walking past us, we never say, “that dress does nothing for her”.

Women drag each other down with a vengeance and then faux-support each other with hashtags and Facebook likes while really thinking something else entirely

I don’t care if my mate is skinny, fat, ugly, bad hair. Once he’s happy I never give it a second thought. I never say to any of the lads “did you see Dave last night? Jesus he looks terrible, he’s put on 5 kilos”. And if I think he’s stressed, or not himself I’ll ask if he’s ok, and mean it sincerely.

Men don’t buy fashion mags full of size 4 women, nor do we watch fashion shows or expose etc.

Yes men are cavemen and ogles a girls boobs etc, jut we aren’t any more than that. There’s no malice in it

anyway. Each to their own etc

Some people just don’t put on excess weight, others do. Some of those who put on too many pounds find it easy to get rid of them, others don’t. We all have a duty to respect the bodies that we were given by the Good Lord and take good care of them. Bear in mind also that Gluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins and those who commit it will be severely punished sooner or later. But we must avoid being mean to people whose genes are such that they easily put on weight and find it very difficult or impossible to shed it. Many of them pay a big price for their obesity, especially if their partner is obese as well, because – to put it in rather crude terms – there are few combinations so frustrating as two big bellies and a short you know what.

She used to work for the Journal too. Louise seems determined to put every event in her life out in the media. Does she have an agent as there has been a steady stream of stories in the press about her. Yes she’s right about fat shaming. Her ambition is to get a show on radio 1. She probably will get it.
