    The fact is if we don’t want Ireland to be centralized more and more around Dublin, we need Cork, and possibly Limerick) to be in a position to grow substantially. Having the city council boundary so tight prevents them from being able to manage and plan for this.
    Its nothing to do with increasing the city population with the stroke of a pen. Its about having a singular authority that can plan, zone and manage the city’s growth into the future, so we don’t have the usual Irish patchwork job, and so all roads don’t lead to Dublin.

    @Eoin Comerford: could not agree more, Cork, Galway and Limerick need to be expanded for the sake of the rest of the country as well as Dublin which is now bursting at the seams, however I would not hold my breath, we cannot even build a motorway to link Cork and Limerick never mind a properly planned vision for Dublin and the rest of the country.

    Sorry but Cork is, was & always will be “the Village”.

    Throwing in a load of extra fields, bogs, cows, boggers from the surrounding County, doesn’t change matters one iota..

    @DeFonz: True, it has a real village mentality about it, but it’s close to the coast and south west so at least some nice place to go.

    No city in Ireland is good eg Dublin is a hole and especially when compared to any mainland European city capital. As for cork I don’t know but it wouldn’t make sense for towns to be now paying city rates. Got to fight against rates. God councillors are worse than politicians.

    ”The population of the city would double” – eh, no, the population of the city would not double, it would just give the illusion of being larger than it is. Why doesnt Limerick just redraw a huge boundary to incorporate its desired population, hmm we want a city of 200,000 lets just draw a boundary that includes 200,000 people in it an call it a city. I cant blame cork for wanting to exaggerate its population, Dublin has been doing it for years, the ‘greater Dublin Area’ is actually the entirety of 4 counties, an area twice the size of Greater London…. how about having a standard, structured, accurate measurement of urban areas like other countries do, were the urban area is considered ‘urban’ and part of a town/city and rural are considered ‘rural’ …..revolutionary.

    How about doing what any sane country would do an amalgamate the city and county council , it’s a small place with a small population. It’s Joke the amount of local councils in ireland should be munster Leinster Connacht and ulster and Dublin why do we need so many

    @S kane: Cork county is not a small place ffs.
    Youghal to Allihies is 191km and about 3 hours, tell me how a single city based council would manage that?

    The county needs its own council, saying this as someone from the city

    @Ían Ó Ceallaigh:

    Big you must be joking, one side to the other is 3 hrs . It’s big in Irish terms small in international terms , still only needs one body to run it. How can a councils in australia manage their size? It’s inefficient having all those councils , 3 hrs apart should still be under the 1 body., an office can be in opposite ends if required but you still have the efficiency of 1 body.

    Saying Blarney, Carrigtwohill, Ballincollig or Glanmire could be considered in any way to be part of Cork City is laughable. There’s five miles of green fields between the outer Cork suburbs of Fairhill and Blackpool. There’s about 10 miles of green fields between Dunkettle Roundabout, the outermost part of Cork on the M8, and Carrigtwohill. Glanmire and Ballincollig are also both a good couple of miles outside the city suburbs.

    It would be like saying Lucan was a part of Dublin City, Clarinbridge a part of Galway City, or Adare a part of Limerick City. A joke.

    Waterford City (which is lobsided and constrained) was also recommended to be expanded but the Govt conveniently ignored this report and said “it’s only a recommendation” and can be ignored while at the same time another “recommendation” which is costing lives (2nd biased cath lab report) has to be adhered to
