She's done it: Hillary Clinton claims Democratic presidential nomination

She has also won the California primary.

HILLARY CLINTON HAS won California’s Democratic primary.

It was the fourth victory for Clinton in six contests held yesterday.

Although she had already garnered enough delegates to assume the mantle of leadership for the party at its convention in Philadelphia next month, the electoral triumphs gave her even greater momentum heading into the general election campaign against real estate mogul Donald Trump, who’s set to be named as the Republican candidate at the GOP convention in Cleveland.

Clinton’s rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, has pledged to “continue the fight” all the way to the Philadelphia convention. But at the same time, he acknowledged that overcoming Clinton at this juncture would be a “very, very steep fight”.

Earlier, Clinton claimed her place in history by becoming the first woman to lead a major American political party. She declared victory in her bruising battle for the Democratic presidential nomination last night.

“This campaign is about making sure there are no ceilings, no limits on any of us,” Clinton said during an emotional rally in Brooklyn, eight years to the day after she ended her first failed White House run.

Clinton had already secured the delegates needed for the nomination, according to an Associated Press tally. She added to this with victories in New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, three of the six states voting yesterday.

Clinton faces a two-front challenge in the coming days. She must appeal to the enthusiastic supporters of Sanders — who insists he still has a narrow path to the nomination — and sharpen her contrasts with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

She sought to make progress on both, using her own loss in 2008 to connect with Sanders’ backers.

It never feels good to put our heart into a cause or a candidate you believe in and come up short. I know that feeling well. But as we look ahead to the battle that awaits, let’s remember all that unites us.

She was biting and sarcastic as she took on Trump, accusing him of wanting to win “by stoking fear and rubbing salt in wounds — and reminding us daily just how great he is”.

Even as the Democratic race was ending, new turmoil broke out among the Republicans. GOP leaders recoiled at Trump’s comments about a Hispanic judge, with one senator even pulling his endorsement.

Trump capped his difficult day with victories in California, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and Montana. But he was muted at his victory rally, saying he understands “the responsibility” of leading the Republican Party. He also made a direct appeal to dejected Sanders supporters and other Democrats.

Donald Trump, Melania Trump Mary Altaffer Mary Altaffer

“This election isn’t about Republican or Democrat, it’s about who runs this country: the special interests or the people,” he said. Trump promised a major speech next week on Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Clinton’s win in New Jersey came a day after she secured the 2,383 delegates she needed to become the first female presumptive nominee of a major political party, according to an AP tally. Her total includes pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses, as well as superdelegates — the party officials and officeholders who can back a candidate of their choosing.

President Barack Obama called both Clinton and Sanders late last night. The White House said Obama congratulated Clinton for “securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic nomination for president” and praised her “historic campaign”, though he did not formally endorse her.

The White House said Obama and Sanders will meet at the White House tomorrow, at the Vermont senator’s request.

Clinton and Sanders were both pressing for victory in California, each eager to effectively end their primary battle on a high note.

Superdelegates

Sanders picked up a win in North Dakota, where a handful of delegates were up for grabs.

Sanders hoped a victory would help in his so-far-unsuccessful bid to get Clinton superdelegates to switch their support. Asked on NBC whether he was continuing that effort, he said, “We are. We’re on the phone right now.”

Clinton and Sanders are also expected to talk in the coming days, Clinton’s spokesman said. The candidates’ campaign managers spoke yesterday.

bern

Republicans had appeared unified after Trump vanquished his last opponents about a month ago. But the real estate mogul has continued to make controversial statements, frustrating party leaders.

The latest cause for GOP concern was his insistence that a judge handling a legal case involving the businessman was being unfair in his rulings. Trump has said US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel can’t be impartial because the jurist’s parents were born in Mexico and Trump wants to build a wall along the border.

Illinois Senator Mark Kirk, who is locked in a close re-election fight, became the first lawmaker to pull his endorsement of Trump. House Speaker Paul Ryan said the businessman’s assertion was the “textbook definition of a racist comment” but he would continue to support Trump.

Trump released a statement saying he does “not feel one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial”. But he still questioned whether he was receiving fair treatment in the case involving the now-defunct Trump University.

Sanders’ achievements have been remarkable for a candidate who was unknown to most Americans before the campaign. He has drawn massive crowds to rallies around the country and built a fundraising juggernaut based largely on small donations online. The Vermont senator has been particularly popular with young voters, an important piece of the Democratic coalition.

Still, Clinton’s victory has been broadly decisive. She leads Sanders by more than three million cast votes.

After her win in New Jersey, Clinton had 2,469 delegates to Sanders’ 1,637. That count includes both pledged delegates and superdelegates.

Trump and the Republicans and Clinton and the Democrats both loyally serve the interests of capitalist elite at the expense of the welfare of the majority working class. The only difference is the style chosen to hide the putrid substance underneath.

Chris Hedges on the grotesque farce that is U.S “democracy”.

Republicans, like Democrats, did not prevent wages from declining, unemployment and chronic underemployment from mounting, foreclosures from ripping apart communities, banks from looting the U.S. treasury, or jobs from being exported. The two major parties colluded to pass trade agreements, ranging from NAFTA and the WTO to the now-pending TPP, that impoverish workers and weaken the power of government to intervene to protect the citizenry and the environment. They worked together to strip citizens of constitutional rights and install the most pervasive security and surveillance state in human history. They collaborated with Wall Street to trash the global economy and seize trillions in taxpayer money in bailouts. The two parties funded disastrous and futile imperial wars that enrich the arms manufacturers and defense contractors while bankrupting the nation. They militarized police, rewrote the laws to explode our prison population and destroyed social service programs such as our welfare system, which was dismantled by the Clinton administration. The two parties orchestrated the corporate coup d’état while diverting citizens with the battles over gay rights, abortion, “Christian” values, gun laws and affirmative action. The country realizes it has been sold out. Most citizens are apathetic and do not vote consistently. Some, especially in the white underclass, are willing to follow anyone, no matter how buffoonish, who promises that the parasites and courtiers will be driven from power. This mixture of rage and apathy is a recipe for totalitarianism………………………
Half of all Americans live in poverty. They have watched helplessly as their communities have been plunged into distress by the flight of manufacturing jobs and as their infrastructure, both moral and physical, has been ripped out from under them. America resembles the developing world. A tiny, oligarchic elite amasses obscene amounts of wealth while most of the population lives amid boarded-up storefronts, dilapidated houses, pothole-riddled streets, abandoned factories and warehouses and crumbling schools. They see no future. They have abandoned hope. Their despair now infects a shrinking and desperate middle class. Americans feel isolated, vulnerable and frightened. They yearn for moral and economic renewal, revived greatness, and vengeance. And many are desperately hunting for a savior outside the established political order.

Wally, I agree with you on principle, the ruling class are only in it for themselves. But so is everyone, in a way. Our desire for cheap affordable goods whilst also demanding top wages made it logical that western societies could no longer support manufacturing industries. It’s a lose lose situation. You might blame the leaders, but the led shouldn’t get off the hook so easily either. The capitalist class profits from the peoples inability or unwillingness to inform themselves and think. With the internet now, the only reason for ignorance is laziness. Greed is human and is spread equally amongst all classes of people.

Moat people aren’t inherently greedy. What they are is afraid as they understand that if they don’t have money in our capitalist society, they’ll be thrown to the wolves. The reality is that there is more than enough real resources (land, energy labour etc) to provide everyone on the planet with proper nutrition, a decent home, healthcare, education and a job. It’s a political and ideological choice to deny people these basics.

Clinton is every bit as much an enemy of the majority working class as Trump is. Sanders has a responsibility to give the U.S working class a chance to vote for a candidate who’s rasion d’etre is not to exploit them. Sanders campaign has mobilized millions of Americans and is a chance to build a new political party to represent the interests of the majority in stark contrast to the Democrats and Republican parties which both serve the corpotocracy and the 1%. Sanders should run as an Independent.

It’s not Sanders job to clear the way for a Clinton presidency. And based on the evidence it’s credible to argue that Clinton would make a more dangerous U.S. president than Trump as John Pilger the great war correspondent explains:

“In the 2008 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton threatened to “totally obliterate” Iran with nuclear weapons. As Secretary of State under Obama, she participated in the overthrow of the democratic government of Honduras. Her contribution to the destruction of Libya in 2011 was almost gleeful. When the Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi, was publicly sodomised with a knife – a murder made possible by American logistics – Clinton gloated over his death: “We came, we saw, he died.”

There is no reason whatever he or his supporters should back Clinton – they are completely opposite candidates in every sense…. honesty, integrity and whose interests they represent – Bernie, those of ordinary citizens, Clinton, the 1%, Wall St, and the war profiteers.

Indeed, Bernie’s challenge has exposed the utter contempt for integrity and democracy in the Clinton camp. Virtually the entire MSM, eso TV channels have nakedly promoted Clinton and ignored or smeared Sanders at every opportunity. As if that wasn’t enough, mass vote rigging in favour of Clinton has occurred in every Primary election, in a variety of forms.

Indeed, Trump would be better than Clinton. He’s an ignoramus and bully from a privileged $$$ background, but at least he’s not a Psychopath like Clinton, or beholden to neocon psychopaths.

Not at all, but if you have a divided Party you have less chance of being in power as President or in Congress to effect change. Whether that’s Bernies ambitious plans or Hillary’s more moderate plans. If Sanders had won I would be very happy to see the Party unite behind him. Just as Hillary had to back in 08. But he has lost and he along with his more extreme supporters can’t seem to accept this.

@Jurgen; What!? Why would Sanders’ supporters want to get behind a democratic party that is essentially now Republican-lite??

Additionally, if beating Trump is all you care about then why on earth don’t you support Sanders? He was performing astronomically better than Hillary against Trump in the polls and because he has very little to hide – unlike Hillary – the presidential debate would actually be about policy, not a mud-slinging contest.

Moreover, do you honestly think that Hillary, unlike Sanders, is not a career politician and would best represent the 99% of Americans? Sanders has even said that he’ll only endorse Hillary if she adopts some of his policies. Hillary on the other hand would only endorse Sanders if he gave her VP or some other high-ranking position of power.

That’s right Shane and he could have run as an independent, but he chose to enter the Democratic party process. He chose to knowing the obstacles, and now he has most likely lost. He chose to slam the superdelegates early on knowing they were part of the Democratic party process. Now he desperately wants them to flip. Why should they support him when Hillary has more pledged delegates, more votes and many view him as disloyal and fractious. He and his supporters can’t have it every way either. The party don’t owe him anything. But the party will have to try very hard to get his supporters onside for November.

@Jurgen; First of all, the fact that Bernie stated he will only endorse Hillary if she adopts some of his policies indicates that he is not just interested in getting to a position of power by all means possible. As the opposite is true for Hillary – she’d only endorse him if he promises her a position of power – it is quite clear that Hillary wants only power whereas Bernie wants change.

Secondly, if he was a careerist, it would make much more sense for him to accept corporate donations, kowtow to Goldman Sachs and other giant financial institutions, refuse to point out how money is corrupting politics, and ignore the obvious by disregarding America’s burgeoning social and economic inequalities.

Thirdly, EVEN if he was a careerist, you’ve indicated that Hillary is far less trustworthy whilst also failing to point out how she, and not Bernie, will benefit 99% of Americans. So why Hillary and not Bernie then!!!???

@Gerard: You are correct, although Bernie was never “meant” to turn into the inconvenience that he did, she was consistently the favorite to take the nomination, so she never had to consider the possibility of endorsing him……

However, she did this exact thing with Obama in 2008 when she became secretary of state, so why would she do anything different with Bernie? Bernie on the other hand has explicitly stated that all he wants is for her to adopt some of his policies that he thinks would engender real and much-needed change.

Do you honestly think that Hillary will look after the best interests of 99% of Americans if she is going to take millions upon millions of corporate donations from massive financial institutions? Do you really think that she, and not Bernie, will help ameliorate the vast social and economic divides in America?

In a “like-ability” poll from just over a month ago (I’ve no source, it was quoted on the Young Turks site and show), Trump won out over Hillary and Bernie won out over Hillary. With the margin between Trump/Hillary and Bernie/Hillary, it was evident that Bernie would come out on top if they were compared.

The thing is, Trump is much more useful once his term(s) end than Clinton could ever be. Who do you want to support as a corporate sponsor, a career politician who will retreat to some governorship once her stint as president is up or a multi-billionaire who would be a useful business partner?

    Fiona,

Clinton is the one favoured by big money, Wall St and the military profiteers, by a country mile. And she has years of form selling policy positions to them.

Trump is the oddball candidate, a billionaire but not really an ‘insider’, and quite possibly has his own brand of patriotism – something the establishment plutocracy doesn’t have in any form.

Clinton is one of the most dangerous candidates, for Americans and the rest of the world, for many, many decades. Utterly dishonest, self serving and very high on the scale of Psychopathy – lacking empathy or conscience – if not actually over the 30 out of 40 on the Psychopathy test.

Psychopathy is the ‘why’ of Nazi Germany…

Its not wrong for a lawyer to take an unpopular case, otherwise they would be denied legal representation and the right to a fair trial. A bigger crime is her moving jobs to China and being a failed negotiator

Everyone doesn’t. Millions more voted for her than Trump in the primaries, and she’ll win the general election in a landslide. Trump voters like to shout louder, just like their candidate, but end up saying nothing of substance, just like their candidate.

She hasn’t “done it”. AP basically ran a poll of superdelegates who have yet to vote. The poll and declaration of Clinton as the nominee was made on the eve of the California primary making it look too many observers like a strategy to undermine support for Sanders in California (and the other primaries at this time). Popular support for Sanders continues to grow.

3 million votes ahead is complete illusion since Bernie won virtually all open primaries.
Closed primaries are made to restrict voting same as the super delegate system that gave Clinton a 400 delegate lead before a vote was cast.
