THREE YEARS AFTER releasing the Playstation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One, both Sony and Microsoft are preparing for another console war, but unlike the last time, it will focus on improvements instead of releasing something brand new.
Sony has confirmed it is developing an upgraded version of its PS4 which will offer 4K resolution and richer graphics.
In an interview with the Financial Times, the president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment said the “high-end” PS4 was in the works.
Codenamed Neo, the upgraded console would be more expensive than the current version, but won’t be revealed at E3, the major gaming conference annually held in Los Angeles, next week.
“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he told the Financial Times.
Sony isn’t the only one planning on releasing an updated version of its console. Microsoft is said to be planning to release two updated consoles, according to Kotaku. One will be a smaller, cheaper Xbox One while the other, codenamed Scorpio, will be a more powerful version.
The compact version will be announced at Microsoft’s event at E3 but the more powerful version won’t be released until 2017. Kotaku also says this version would be technically capable of supporting the Oculus Rift and that Microsoft is pursuing a partnership with it which could mean native support for the VR headset.
Both the Xbox One and PS4 were released at the end of 2013, with Sony’s console selling more than 40 million units worldwide. Both companies will have keynote events at E3 next week where new titles for their respective platforms will be announced.
Unlike Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo is currently working on its next-generation console. Codenamed NX, not much has been revealed about it except it would incorporate a “brand new concept” and has a planned release date of March 2017.

Nah, PS4 games are beginning to pick up pace now. More than a year ago things were in a bad way, there has been good stuff released since then. Uncharted, fallout, witcher, DOOM, etc. are all class. I think the next year of games will really see the current gen pick up pace.

How kids and adults sit in front of a TV and play games all day and night is beyond me, my a son plays a lot on ps4 and at least once a day I feel like drop kicking it through the window,
Games are fun.
It’s a hobby like golf, reading, or chess. Each to their own.

It’s an entertainment system and no different than watching a movie or something. I agree that doing it all day and night is a bit much and like anything else needs to be enjoyed in moderation.
How about instead of standing on the console you help your son curb his addiction by giving him a set timetable in which he can enjoy his console? Sounds like someone is not in control here and it’s not the console.

It’s a pity you hold those views, Mick. A lot of older people who never grew up with gaming as a medium believe the same. Games are a creative medium much like reading a book or watching a movie.
While online gaming is a platform for socialising, many people make friends and take part in communities through games. I think you need to approach what your son does with an open mind, you’ve got totally the wrong idea.
Its funny people never have an issue with wasting their lives away in shit jobs but having “an non productive” hobby is terrible. its incredible how programed and blinkered some people are.
He’s 22 and still living in your house? Throw his ass out and tell him go get a job, build his own house and waste his own time playing ps4 all day but he won’t be doing it in your home.
I get where mick is coming from. He’s not dealing with an adult engaging in a little hobby like the rest of us. He’s dealing with someone who suffers from Peter Pan syndrome whose yet to grow out of his youth.

Amazing how gaming is seen as a lazy, nerdy thing whereas watching movies, sport, reading etc. are seen to be more fruitful ways to spend your time. When are we finally going to accept that games are a legitimate medium like anything else? A lot of games are better than some books, for god’s sake.

More than likely Microsoft will integrate Windows more in xBox to try and get in on the PC Gaming market, while offering xBox games to PC Gamers. Steam are printing money now by just being an online selling platform, and Microsoft clearly want some of that money.
Consoles will be very lucky to have another generation in them with high performing gaming pcs becoming relatively more economical to purchase. The issue that microsoft forget that many gamers want a quick premade console that they can slot cod or fifa in, the crossplatform thing with windows 10 on consoles is not something many console gamers care about.
The PC gaming market is going to leave the rest behind due to advances in technology. I recently bought a PC, the graphics chip alone was €800. It can do 75 frames per second. These consoles are what, 30 per second?
At the very high end of gaming, people will only want a PC.

It’s not just about frames per second, how are you going to play Uncharted 4 on PC and many other console exclusives? Once there are no big exclusives for consoles then I agree – PC will eventually take over, but think Sony or MS are aware of this and won’t cannibalise own business?
Pm won’t take over because your graphics card alone costs what an xbox and ps4 combined would cost.

Eucrid, thing about PC is sure, it’s an expensive initial cost, but once you have the parts there are no subscription fee, games are generally half the price they are on consoles(or free if you just use pirate bay), and you can use it for so much more than gaming. In the long run PC is far cheaper.
Xbox and ps4 have a combined install base of 50 million, steam has an active account base of 125 million, yeah PC is never gonna be able take over…… cus it already has
75 FPS??? My system averages 90 to 125 FPS, depending on the game.
PC is fine but won’t beat consoles on convenience and price (not yet anyway). Throw in few exclusive games that cannot be found on pc and choice is clear for me. At the same time I’m not hating at pc gamers, I understand that technically it’s superior platform. Real gamer has many platforms anyway :)

Yes you can lie down and play a PC, all controllers work on PC’s, also theres nvidia’s shield system, then theres also steam links, PC beats consoles literally everywhere except for the very odd console exclusive which when you compare them to the amount of PC exclusives that dont make it to consoles who really cares.
Basically anyone still trying to claim consoles are better than PC’s is clueless and ignorant of the real facts behind the discussion

LOL 800 is way overkill and honestly i don;t believe it, you can get the new amd cards for 200 which are meant to be just as good as last generations top cards, again using that number to try prove the point shows ignorance of the argument, any money you spend on the pcs you save with the price of the actual games.
I’m 47 and still game every day if I can playing destiny on Xbox, would you rather him sitting in the pub every night Mick if he moved out then I’m sure he’d be doing the same thing just not under your roof. He’s an adult, my 23 yo spends her eves watching Netflix but she does hit the gym at 6am each morning. It’s not an unhealthy pastime and that’s how kids connect nowadays via online, I nearly fell over the other day when I was told that this generation think it’s easier to date through tinder rather than meet someone in a pub or club.

Surprisingly, i find my new super powerful PC struggles the most with Civ 5, even though it was released in 2010. Must be some serious amount of calculations, strategy etc going on with the AI.

Try steam console from Alienware. 100′s of pc games but in a console.
Or just build your own at half the cost.
Microsoft should concentrate on making a more robust console. My last 3 died after less than 2 years extremely light use.
