Twenty Irish bred puppies found crammed in car boot

The ISPCA is now looking for homes for the puppies.

THERE ARE CALLS for a crackdown on illegal dog breeding after twenty Irish bred puppies were found crammed into the boot of a car at a Scottish port.

012 ISPCA ISPCA

They were rescued as a result of a part of Operation Delphin – a joint operation between the Irish and Scottish Societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The twenty puppies were seized from the boot of a car in Cairnryan ferry port in Scotland and have now been brought to the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre in Longford.

An undercover Inspector for the Scottish SPCA said, “Unfortunately the puppy trade is big business in Scotland, with thousands of dogs being brought into the country each year, from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in particular.”

The puppies were all too young to travel, were not accompanied by pet passports and although microchipped were not registered on an approved database as required under the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations.

ISPCA CEO Dr Andrew Kelly said: “This was a horrific way to transport these vulnerable puppies and the person they were seized from had no regard for their welfare.

“We do not know exactly where these puppies originated from in Ireland but our investigations are continuing.

The ISPCA believes it is time for a crackdown on illegal behaviour by dog breeders in Ireland and is calling on all local authorities to enforce the DBE legislation robustly and to take action where breeders fail to comply.

The rescued puppies, aged from four to eight weeks old, included Shih Tzu’s, Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Pugs and Cocker Spaniels.

Some of the puppies were too young to be separated from their mother and had to be hand fed by ISPCA staff.

All twenty puppies will be spayed/neutered when of age and the ISPCA will be appealing for good, loving homes for them shortly. For more information, please visit www.ispca.ie, email info@ispca.ie or call 043 33 25035.

Shocking to say he least !
4wks old, far too young & while the breeder is to blame, without willing buyers they would have no trade. People need to do research before buying.

I’d recommend shutting them in a car boot and taking them on a spin to Scotland ……. maybe via France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark and Norway ….. without food water or poop breaks!

I have a rescued cocker spaniel was used as a bait dog for 4 yrs, She is amazing just goes crazy when she sees other dogs so walking her is interesting. Cant put a muzzle on her as she goes into fight mode if I do, But wouldn’t be without her except when she ate a full bag of treats & shall we say the next 24 hrs were interesting.!!!!!!!!!!

This is the result of puppy farming like what is going on in Cavan ! Silly people looking for designer breeds yet have no idea what owning a dog involves then getting fed up and dumping it !! The poor pups only taken away from their mothers have no idea the cruelty that humans are capable of ! Time adopt don’t shop

In Sweden there are no dogs for sale until the pounds are empty. Wish the Irish government would consider doing the same. I have 5 rescued dogs, someone else’s throw aways/ unwanted pets and have fostered countless dogs and i think this puppy farming is a bigger problem than the government care to admit.

I think you may have your countries mixed up a bit. Sweden have only a very small number of pounds, mostly taking in dogs where owners may have died, gone to prison or had the dog seized. Dog breeding is heavily regulated, both by legislation and by the kennel club’s involvement and you’re often on a waiting list to purchase a dog from a breeder. To buy a dog also tend to be very expensive compared to Irish prices, meaning that people are more likely to have thoroughly considered the implications of owning a dog. A number of charities work to rehome Irish dogs in Sweden and it appears to be a popular choice at the moment as paying a 600 Euro adoption fee is much cheaper than buying a dog from a Swedish breeder. Mistreatment, allowing your dog to stray and other breaches of animal welfare legislation also carries very hefty fines, imprisonment and bans from owning animals.

Reading that some puppies had to be hand fed indicates they would have to be fed milk via a bottle with a teat. Thats way too early to leave their mother. The driver wouldnt have gone to the trouble. They definitely would have died. We just dont address animal cruelty issues in this country. Sentences are paltry and havent changed since we inherited the constitution from the british. Some elements hark back to the victorian era. Would be great to see a minister of agriculture finally address these persistent cruelty issues with appropriate legislation.
