Appeal after man drowns while swimming in Grand Canal

The man drowned 10 days ago.

GARDAÍ ARE APPEALING for witnesses following the drowning death of a man in Dublin.

The drowning incident occurred at the Grand Canal in Portobello in the early hours of last Saturday 18 June.

The deceased is described as early 20s, 5’8” in height, black hair and wearing a black and blue shirt. He got into difficulty while swimming in the Grand Canal at around 4.25am.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Portobello area between 4am and 4.45am on 18 June, to contact them at Terenure Garda Station on 01 666 4000, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

    i’d imagine that if you witnessed a man drowning in the early hours of the morning you’d remember that!

    Is it just me or does it seem strange someone”went swimming” at 4:45 am in the canal. I’m sure it was all above board.

    Sounds like quote possibly there was alcohol involved, especially at that time of the morning at the weekend.

    @Michael Webb parts of the canal are shallow but around locks it’s deeper and the bottom is very soft. If you look into the canal it might only look a few feet deep but if you try to walk in it you can sink up to your knees in the sediment.
