Ghostbusters backlash reflects sexism problem in Hollywood

The all-female reboot of Ghostbusters hits Irish cinemas on 15 July.

AN ALL-FEMALE reboot of Ghostbusters hits cinemas later this month amid a fierce backlash by Internet trolls that has placed the spotlight back onto Hollywood’s gender discrimination problem.

The film’s first trailer has become the most reviled in YouTube history, having amassed almost 900,000 dislikes, while director Paul Feig and his cast have been bombarded with death threats and misogyny on social media.

Sony Pictures Entertainment / YouTube

“This garbage was made to make Feminazis happy,” one Twitter user complained.

Feig, who has made his name directing female stars in hits such as Bridesmaids, was responsible for bringing on board Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig for the new version of the 32-year-old all-male original movie.

“I’ve been hit with some of the worst misogynistic stuff you’ve ever seen in your life over the last two years,” he told a recent producers’ conference at Sony Pictures headquarters in southern California.

The onslaught that came in was just so chilling.

The Women and Hollywood blog noted a similar reaction after the producers of Star Wars cast female leads – in the latest installment and the upcoming Rogue One – after six consecutive male-led films.

“We are struggling every day to get the word out against that bias. We still get called in the press a ‘chick flick’ constantly,” Feig said.

“We’re never referred to without the words ‘all-female Ghostbusters,’ which makes me crazy,” he added.

“You never talk about the ‘all-male Expendables.’ It’s an uphill battle that I can’t believe in 2016 we’re having to fight.”

“Province of Males”

The backlash against Ghostbusters demonstrates how deeply ingrained the idea remains that big-budget, mainstream movies are “the province of males,” says Martha Lauzen of San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film.

She said:

Traditionally, they have featured males and been made by males, with a young male audience in mind.

“Further, the majority of critics reviewing these films have been male,” she added. “Making a reboot of one of these films with a mostly female cast violates this group’s sense that this public space belongs to them.”

Women comprised 9% of directors and 11% of writers working on the top 250 domestic grossing films in 2015, according to Lauzen’s annual Celluloid Ceiling study.

The knock-on effect is fewer female characters of any depth or interest on screen.

Of 11,306 speaking characters in film and television in 2014 analysed by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, two-thirds were male overall and almost three-quarters in feature films.

However, the figures suggest the industry is shooting itself in the foot.

Female-led films grossed 3.3% more than movies with male protagonists in 2014, according to Stacey Smith, director of the school’s Media, Diversity, and Social Change Initiative.

 Taking risks

At 25, the Australian actress Margot Robbie is carving out a reputation for picking roles that are anything but shrinking violets, from the feisty Naomi Lapaglia in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street to the villainous Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, which comes out in August.

“I think people have finally recognised that half the ticket sales are coming from women,” she said in an interview about her fiery take on the character of Jane in the upcoming The Legend of Tarzan.

And if they don’t create the kind of roles that women are going to be able to relate to, then they’re not going to enjoy watching them as much.

Anna Rose Holmer’s directorial debut The Fits, which played to acclaim at the Venice and Sundance film festivals, could be described as independent cinema’s Ghostbusters.

Made almost entirely by women and girls behind and in front of the camera, it focuses on an 11-year-old who trains as a boxer with her brother at a Cincinnati community center while dreaming of becoming a dancer.

Holmer, who wrote the film with Lisa Kjerulff and Saela Davis, feels the gender-bias tide may finally be receding.

“But ultimately, the thing that’s going to change is if people hire women and people invest in women and people take risks with women in the helm,” she said.

“That’s the only way it changes, and that requires action,” she added.

It’s very simple and it’s possible.

The essesnce of the official Bond films (not the 1967 version of Casino Royale or Never Say Never Again, which was a Thunderball remake) is faithful to Ian Fleming’s work.

The entire idea of the comic book movies is that they’re remade on a regular basis with news casts and new stories. The idea of the Bond movies is that they’re remade on a regular basis. Nobody asked for a Ghostbusters remake, especially not one that appears to be as bad as this will be. The jokes are awful, the actresses lacking and the trailers have been terrible to say the least. There’s no sexism involved, it’s just backlash to an awful set of advertisements for an awful movie.

Jason that is factually incorrect. Spider Man was rebooted twice in one decade and the plot was mainly Spider Mans origin story. Nobody asked for a Spider Man story twice in one decade. The Bond films are just for big corporations to display the glitzy products. People have been asking for Wonder Women yet her apperance sidelined for Super Man and Batman.

The utter tripe that’s being produced today is shocking. Have they completely ran out of new ideas or is it a case of the public will just accept anything nowadays? Unfortunately both. That’s what’s wrong with this movie, nothing to do with the female cast.

The reason a lot of criticism focused on the fact that the main cast were all women is because there are zero reasons to remake it so it just seems like a needless obvious attempt to push an agenda rather than make an entertaining movie. The new Star Wars had a minute amount of backlash from Internet trolls in comparison because it wasn’t a remake and the female characters were actually new characters. They didn’t just make Han Solo a women. It was a huge commercial success.

@Daisy Spider-Man “fanboys” have seen countless reboots/multiverses/alternate timelines/takes on the character including a female clone in the comics alone at the hands of lots of different writers and artists through the years and as such are used to films which are a melting pot of the above ingredients. It’s nigh impossible to make one film that is faithful to all that. The net is full of fans giving out about those films.

Ghostbusters fans are rightly peeved because an actual classic from comedy legends is being done a disservice. While I enjoyed most of the Spider-Man films I don’t regard them as classic material.

In a vacuum – It has very little to do with the fact that they are female. For real fans of the original Ghostbusters, it has a lot more to do with the fact that for years a third movie was rumoured with all the original cast, and it never came to fruition. You just can’t capture the charm of the original.

For everyone else – I’ve only seen the trailers like most people, and based on that – it just looks like a horrible movie. The dialogue doesn’t feel natural. It feels forced. The general vibe doesn’t capture my attention.

Ghostbusters is a story about Egon, Ray, Winston and Venkman. If you want to make an all female cast replacing the originals, don’t call it Ghostbusters. Call it Ghostbusters The New Cast or something. It would be like creating Charlies Angels with an all male cast, and not changing the title to reflect it.

It’s not misogynistic to be a purist.

Strong male cast and woeful reviews. Furthermore they forget who the target market is. 4 female leads from “chic flick” films arent going to drive interest from a largely male probably 25-30 audience.

(Which isn’t surprising, since we live in a very misogynistic world where it’s very institutional and insidiously pervasive, so please don’t think I’m dissing you!) (However I’m not defending the film. It should not have been remade simply because it should not have been remade.)

I know exactly the same number of female ghostbusters as I do male ghostbusters. Zero. It’s fiction. Fiction or not, the only roles women are “less believable in” are roles where maleness is inherently a part of the character which is inseparable. “ghostbuster” isn’t “sperm donor” or “biological father” or “male prostitute” last I looked.
and no, I’m not an undergrad. (nor a “young mangina” as UndieGrundy seems to think.) I’m definitely not “young” I’m rather middle-aged. My feminism isn’t “societally-induced” nor “institutional” it stems from recognising that we live in a culture where women are systemically undervalued and marginalised.
But.. that has nothing to do with the fact that the film Ghostbusters did not need, and should not have had, a “remake” full stop.

They’re paid less for doing the same job
They are denied reproductive health services without having to travel outside the country (The thing we’re waiting on a referendum over, thanks Mr. O’Keeffe)
They are constantly told that they’re worthless if they’re not pumping out kids.
They’re constantly told that they’re worthless if they’re not “a good wife” to some man
They’re constantly told they’re worthless if they:
Don’t wear high-heeled shoes that damage their legs and can’t possibly be comfortable
Don’t wear tons of make up
    Are too heavy
    Are too tall
    Don’t have perfect skin

They’re told they should be subservient, and they should limit themselves to “girly” careers like teaching and nursing when they’re not popping out babies.

Their opinions are often entirely disregarded, and not sought out, even on matters where only they can possibly have a legitimate opinion.
They themselves are often dismissed as weak, stupid etc.., just because they are female, and comments like “she’s on the rag” and such get thrown about.

Hygeine products they *NEED* to have access to are often taxed.

They’re always getting mixed-messages such as “you need make up to be pretty” and “make up makes you look like a wh0re”

Todd women are paid equally for the same job. The reproductive health service denial was voted by referendum by the people of Ireland both male and female, so you can’t solely blame men for that one. In all my 56 years I was never, or had I ever heard of anyone being told to wear excessive makeup, the complete opposite in fact, any male I know hates faces plastered in fake colours and potions, akin to kissing a paintpot I was once told. Designers and or hype gurus decide what clothes and shoes are in fashion and we have the freedom to choose what we wear. Being too heavy is bad for your health and that applies as much to men as it does women. I was unable to ‘pump’ out babies I was never ever told I was worthless, in fact the opposite was true. It’s not tough being female, and it’s a far easier gig than it was back in the 70s when women had to give up work after getting married, when certain pubs refused to serve women, when there was an expectation to be a good and obedient wife. Most of us that fought that male oppression and won have accepted that we can and do stand equal. You really do need to visit the 21st century.

“They’re paid less for doing the same job”

Women in Ireland are outearning men by 17%. Largest reverse gender pay gap in the world, OECD report. Try again cos you’re clearly clueless

“They are denied reproductive health services without having to travel outside the country (The thing we’re waiting on a referendum over, thanks Mr. O’Keeffe)”

Killing your own off-spring for convenience (abortion) is fortunately not a human right and appears nowhere in the UN charter or any treaties. Have a look yourself if you don’t believe me. Accept for cases of FFA/raqpe/incest the majority of people in this country (58%) do not want abortion on demand here and according to a recent Red C poll sponsored by Newstalk, the majority that oppose abortion on demand in well educated Ireland, are women. More women than men in Ireland oppose abortion.

I’d deal with your next batch of points as a collective as they are both puerile and ridiculous.

“They are constantly told that they’re worthless if they’re not pumping out kids.
They’re constantly told that they’re worthless if they’re not “a good wife” to some man
They’re constantly told they’re worthless if they:

If it was all after the first trailer I’d agree but lots of people were hating on the all female cast long before a single frame was ever shot. They just happened to be right. Also the fact that they received a large number of death threats just speaks volumes. It is going to be a shit movie but that doesn’t mean sexism hasn’t played a role in how much negative attention is being lumped on it.

The “backlash” surrounding the new ghostbusters has all to do with it being a terribly made remake of a classic than the gender of its cast.

But hey, cry “sexism” – much easier excuse for the producers to hide behind rather than accepting responsibility for making a crappy film.

You can argue sexism being the reason for this remake, reimagining reboot….whatever you want to call it being so poorly received. But quite frankly look at every single remake that’s come out in the last decade or so. You can name a dozen terrible, poorly received remakes without much problem. You can list off a much much smaller handful of good ones.

If you want to choose sexism as the key reason as to why a remake is getting such poor responses, you have to explain why almost every single other remake gets the same complaints without there being any elements that could be considered feminist material.

TV and movies are starting to break immersion as you can see where they are sticking in progressive tropes for political reasons. every show has to have a gay character , and then if a gay character gets killed Tumblr melts the internet. then there are lots of female badass characters but again the internet melts if they get hit. Essentially the sjw crowd (who proably dont go to the cinema much anyway) want unkillable gay characters and female characters that go through a movie without getting so much as a scratch.

    -Not because of sexism.

-Not because the target audience is immature.

They don’t like the look of it because it genuinely looks like a really dull, unfunny, not-scary (the ghosts being too cartoonish), lame film.

I’m sick of this coming down to sexism, it’s not sexism, there are countless women online saying it was a bad idea and from the trailers is a weak film.
People in production, have said its a poor film and have leaked the storyline, citing ad hoc copy and paste of huge chunks of the original two. There has been conflict among the actress’s.
Further to this, there is the story of how Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroid where bullied by the Sony head Amy Pascal, who railroaded them out of the process and hired Paul Feig.
The original third film was supposed to be a passing of the torch from the original ghostbusters to a new mixed group. Instead this film is reverse sexism in action and has racist undertones, but yet they call any criticism masogynist and that’s not getting in to Paul Feig calling the fan base a shower of A**h****.

The criticism that the all-female cast of Ghostbusters is isn’t mainly by internet trolls and misogynists. Paul Feig chose to make this movie, not for the die-hard Ghostbusters fans who been waiting more than 30 years for a well made follow up, but as a “political message” to show the world that females can be badass in action films just as much as guys. Hello! We’re all aware of that already – eg. Ellen Ripley (the Alien franchise) Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen (the Hunger Games), Kate Uma Thurman in (Kill Bill) etc etc.

I guarantee that if there was an Alien reboot with the protagonist cast as a man then there would be uproar from the same people heavily criticising this new Ghostbusters film.

The original ghostbusters is loved by 4-10 year old kids now in their 30s who wanted to be a ghostbuster. Men want to be MEN not women. Sure we are inspired by women (Ellen Ripley in Aliens) but no boy says “I wanna be a Queen” or “I wanna be Mary Poppins”. And here lies the reason everyone is so pissed at Ghostbusters. There is nothing sexist I’m not wanting to be a woman. You have simply stamped on the childhoods of millions of the male demographic who loved the movie. Women are not the ideal cast for an exterminator. Not four of them anyways, that’s just a political statement of equality stemming from an agenda far from just making a good movie. Yes people, men and women are different, gravitate to different jobs and like different things. This should be celebrated, not used as an excuse by pseudo intellectual angry folk to attack people.

It is almost everyday you see a feminist issue in the newspaper or on social media, every second day you see women putting up stuff on Facebook that they saw something outside a café or a restaurant that in their minds over sexualises woman. Equality between the sexes should be a given throughout the world. Ireland and Europe has equality apart from our stupid abortion law. The problem I have with feminists is that they have this constant chip on their shoulder and nitpick every little thing in society and they go on about Ireland having a rape culture which is clearly nonsense. The sad thing about them is that they go on about caring for womans well being everywhere yet in places like the middle east, south America and Africa where for example in Saudi Arabia woman are not allowed to drive a car or in south Africa where a woman is raped every 9 seconds or in Paraquay where girls as young as 11 are having children due to the continents machismo mentality and yet you hear nothing about that instead the guardian newspaper goes on about a BBC tennis commentator making a comment about a players girlfriend. Going back to Ireland I think the radical feminist movement has gained strength because of the rise of the amount of children living in single mother homes, I don’t hate single mothers and if in the future I end up marrying one great but there is someone who have this thing in their minds just because you had a bad experience with a man that we are all bad. I know its hard to believe for some woman but there is good guys in the world and basically this movement in my opinion has gone away from its fundamentals and is now driving a wedge between the genders.

I don’t hate the movie because of its all female cast. I hate the movie because it looks dull, unfunny and unnecessary, a quintessential reboot of a movie that shouldn’t be rebooted (see also Robocop, Total Recall, the many recent horror remakes). If it looked good, people would watch it and not hate on it regardless of who is in it. I hate that because of the surface issue of a female cast, claiming it is bad is now an act of misogyny instead of pointing out the deeper issues. Add in that awful Fall out Boy theme song as well.

It’s because it’s remake and not a follow up to the original films is why people are pissed off,you can’t replace Bill Murray with Melissa McCarthy

Don’t care I don’t like reboots the only thing that would have interested me would if it was the original cast and an added chapter to the story. Boohoo about it staring women. I’d like to see McCarthy and wiig in something original. This reboot craic is a load of bull sure they rebooted Spider-Man a couple years after making the third or fourth film in the previous version, I didn’t have any interest in the Toby Maguire films the next lot had no chance with me. Hollywood would want to try being a bit more creative.

If they want to put more women as leads in films, grand. Just don’t screw up a classic film to make your point. I liked the female lead in the latest star wars movie. But if they decided to go back and make star wars with Lily Skywalker and Darth Veronica then I’d probably not be interested. Mainly because I like those movies the way they are.

Oh please, again with this nonsense? It isnt the gender of the cast causing the hate. Yes, that was always going to cause trolling. Much like there was racist trolling over The Force Unleashed featuring a black stormtrooper when its trailer first came out and how there is sexist trolling over Rogue One for having another female lead. But guess what, those trailers dont have a million dislikes and a massive public backlash the way this movie does. Because trolls are always a minority making hateful comments for attention. Which they’ve been given in spades when it comes to this movie. But they do not represent the majority.

The majority of people who hate this film do so because, for one thing, its a remake of a much loved movie. Something thats always hated. Its just that a movie of GB’s stature has never been done before. GB is still hugely popular. Only a remake of Back to the Future would be as reviled. Secondly, its a remake that looks incredibly poor and misses everything that was great about the original. The cast is essentially the female equivalent of the Grown Ups cast. Had actresses who are respected and funny been cast (for example, Sandra Bullock, Emily Blunt, Rose Byrne) it would be a totally different story, but no, we got Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones making fart jokes..

Crap article. Crap argument. Ghostbusters looks like garbage, that’s where most of the backlash is coming from. On the other hand I’m all for Gillian Anderson as Jane Bond. We’re not all sexist swine, some of us just hate seeing our childhood chewed up and regurgitated as a money grabbing steaming turd, parading itself as a feminist moment and criticising anyone who disagrees as vile sexist fascists.

I think I understand. People HATE this movie because it has a bad trailer and it didn’t need to be re-made. The death treats and outlandish threats to the actors in the movie were not sexist. The men posting on here are not sexist but sexist comments get more thumbs up than thumbs down because all the non-sexist commentators keep hitting the wrong button. But the re-make would be better if it had men or at least women who looked sexier. Got it. I think.

I wouldn’t normally comment on these sites, but genuinely a bit lost about the hate speech. Have thought this is going to be a fantastic film since the day I watched the trailer, actually am so excited! Think I have over 20 people (men and woman) lined up to go and due to the comments I’m inclined to organise more…

All of the actresses in this are a credit, whether or not it is male or females playing the roles makes no difference really. What you all seem to forget and no matter what any of you say, these ladies are so good and professional at what they do and only with their contribution will this twist on an old movie is what will make it a great film to watch.

Enjoy, and continue the good work, there will be more support for this film now more so than the old one

Can’t speak for the online trolls, but sexism is not the reason I’m troubled by this movie. It’s the remaking of an old film with the new twist/gimmick being the swapping of genders of all the characters. Seriously. Right down to the secondary characters, all of them seem to have their genders swapped.

A new Star Wars flick with female leads, bring it on. Sounds great. No problem with that.

However remaking an old Star Wars film and swapping the genders – I consider that lazy and pandering to the audience.

Dodgy trailers aside, this may even be an alright movie. But the circumstances of its creation have poisoned the well a bit too much for my tastes.

To perhaps sum up my opinion another way. How would you feel if they remade another old film and swapped the genders, e.g. The A-Team, Charlies Angels, Indiana Jones or Even American Pie?
