IRELAND HAS JUST deployed another ship to the Mediterranean to help save migrants and refugees seeking to make their way to Europe.
The LÉ James Joyce will be the fifth Irish naval vessel deployed to the region and will carry on the humanitarian work of its predecessors.
It takes over from the LÉ Róisín which has been in the region for the past 10 weeks.
Last summer the LÉ Eithne was the first to Irish vessel to respond to the escalating crisis, spending nine weeks away from Ireland and rescuing almost 3,400 people.
More than 8,500 people have been rescued in total by Irish vessels.
The new boat will be under the command of Lieutenant Commander Neil Manning and departed from the Naval Base in Haulbowline in Cork this morning.
The LÉ James Joyce is one of the newest ships in the Irish navy, with its construction only being completed in 2014.

Fair play and good luck to them, I have done volunteer work along the Balkan route. I have seen dentists and doctors and chello players and oboe, carpenter and sign writer, lying on plastic bags full of clothes etc, everything they had left in this world in a plastic bag. The job now is to separate refugee from emigrant at point of landing and send the latter back to where they departed and start agreeing on resettlement of the former.

Other survivors of the accident claim that Alan’s father was the organiser and driver of the boat and made money from trafficking migrants and refugees. It is a horror that the little boy died but the person who put his life at risk was his father and it cost him his life….along with the rest of his family. That being said, if these people had one iota of ability to run decent or at least competent societies/countries then they wouldn’t be such easy pickings.
These places – the middle east, the rest of Asia, Africa and so on – have had millennia in which to advance and develop into something worthwhile without interference from the west, but they failed to do so.
They now have a variety of working western examples from which to choose to copy should they wish to create nice societies for themselves. They fail to do this.
Other places, such as Japan and South Korea from my oddly deleted example, have modernized and thrived under heavy western influence.
The problem starts and ends with non-western types. The west is merely peeking in from time to time and doing for itself.
Seeing as the ship is named after the biggest conman in Irish history I’ll bet all the Irish Navy sailors will ask for overtime for doing a nice leisurely holiday tour of the Med. in mid-summer.
The Irish Navy sailors will probably also charge the Irish taxpayer for their sunburn as well.
