Ghostbusters star wants Twitter to fight trolls after barrage of racist abuse

Trolls sent the actress images which compared her to a gorilla.

ELLE Women in Comedy Event Leslie Jones AP / Press Association Images AP / Press Association Images / Press Association Images

STAND UP COMEDIAN and Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones has said she is in “personal hell” after receiving a barrage of abuse on Twitter.

Last night, she appealed to Twitter to fight back at the trolls and accounts that were sending her racist and abusive tweets:

Jones, who has been a member of the Twitter community since 2009, had spent some hours retweeting abuse that she had been receiving, as well as replying to commenters.

Jones said she was reporting and blocking numerous trolls who had targeted her.

In addition to the abusive tweets, fake tweets purported to be written by Jones and Ghostbusters director Paul Feig were also being circulated:

In response, Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, sent a tweet to Jones asking her to contact him:

Jones is the latest in a long line of people who have spoken out about abuse they have received on Twitter – and called for the site to do more to fight it.

Under Twitter rules, the site says it does “not tolerate behaviour that crosses the line into abuse, including behaviour that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another user’s voice”.

It said that sites which send violent threats, harass other uses, promote violence, create multiple accounts to abuse people or publish other people’s private information “may be temporarily locked and/or subject to permanent suspension”.

Guidelines

In its guidelines for how users should report abuse, Twitter recommends firstly blocking the user. It says that if users “continue receiving unwanted, targeted and continuous @replies on Twitter, and feel it constitutes online abuse”, they should consider reporting the behaviour to Twitter.

It urges users to contact local law enforcement authorities if they believe they are in physical danger, and to make sure they document any abusive messages.

It also advises people to turn to family and friends for support and advice.

In May of this year Jack Dorsey said in an interview with the BBC:

I don’t think the negativity and the abuse and harassment is unique to Twitter.
I think it’s an industry-wide, internet-wide issue that we all need to solve. And we did make it a priority for the company.

In the UK, a number of cases of Twitter abuse have led to arrests and jail sentences.

A man was arrested on suspicion of harassment offences after campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez received rape threats on Twitter. In 2014, a 42-year-old man was sent to jail for eight weeks over offensive tweets about a teacher who was stabbed.

Also in 2014, a 21-year-old was jailed after comments he made on Facebook.

Here in Ireland, politicians have spoken out about the abuse – including death threats – which they have received online. While legislation to tackle such abuse has been mooted, no new laws have been brought in to date.

In her most recent tweet, Jones said she was leaving Twitter “with tears and a very sad heart” because of the abuse she has received.

Majority of them are trolls indeed and you need to look East. Putin troll army steering and using racial tensions in US. It is the best moment with death of policeman. I followed up some of accounts and they either fresh ones or “empty”. If you look at RT twitter account “Black Lives Matter” is one of their main subjects at the moment. The same way they are using current situation with refugees in EU. You can see how majority of “people” on The Journal who hail Putin and his polices urging for “quick action” against immigrants and Islam and yet in Russia subject of religion in media is banned by Kremlin. BTW French terrorist sent home 100K http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/17/nice-terror-attack-police-vans-blocking-promenade-withdrawn-hour1/ before he drove a truck into the crowd. ISIS does not pay this type of money and they only claimed responsibility in 3 days. The same tactics were used in Ukraine. I am just amazed when the West is going to wake up.

In a case like this, that essentially means leaving Twitter. It’s not a small group of bullies who can be ignored or blocked; it’s a relentless stream of abusive idiots who – thanks to Twitter’s lax registration requirements – respawn as soon as they’re eliminated.

I disagree. Making comparisons to something as terrible and viscerally emotive as rape is a massive leap when it’s not relevant to the topic. Like calling someone ‘racist’ or ‘sexist’, it’s extremely loaded and attempts to compare people disagreeing with rape apologism.

Rochelle, Jason Culligan certainly has form. He is a passionate gun advocate, denies racism (using expressions such as “institutional” racism) expresses strong alarmism about Islam instead of the specific threat of Jihadism and promotes a strongly right wing viewpoint, asserting for example in the case of the killing of the British MP, Jo Cox, that the perpetrator used a homemade gun, not a manufactured gun.

Jason Culligan often uses insulting terms about those who are liberal or on the left or who advocate for stricter gun control.

Jason defends the police execution style killings of black citizens and spends much time defending the guns and arms industries, often relying on the rhetoric and distorted arguments of the NRA.

Noreen L’s comment draws no equivalence between rape and racist tweets and does not seek to compare rape and racist tweets.

Jason Culligan misrepresented the comment of Noreen L so as to indulge himself with his SJW comment. It’s a standard distraction tactic which he deploys so as to divert from the topic of the article.

Noreen L merely points out that passivity and withdrawal from public space in real life or online are not the solution. That is a reasonable and sensible position to adopt.

It would be unfortunate if social media sites were left to the monopoly of comments of Jason Culligan and his ilk.

I think people, especially sensitive ones, need to expect a torrent of abuse and learn how to deal with it (hire pr, dont use Twitter under real name etc). The extreme right use a lot of pejorative terms such as “libtards” “SJWs” and other equivalent expression but it is mere invective, adds nothing of substance to the debate and merely reveals the mentality of the person who uses such expressions.

The use of such expressions is a code or signal for those on the extreme right to recognise each other and to mob those who disagree with them.

It does not surprise me at all that Jason Culligan would divert the discussion away from the reality of the racist tweets by deploying this expression. It’s a standard tactic fir those who want to distract from the reality of racism.

Hate to be the one to have to break it to ya, but racism is not criticism. You think that because she works in the public eye, she is a legitimate target for racism?

…and then you went on to deride her for having the temerity to object to the “attention” (which in this case was racism).

Ricky, there can be no doubt that What’s shown here is a very mild selection of the comments as the journal cannot publish the majority of the more serious tweets.

If this had been a Muslim actress getting trolled on social media the majority of commenters here would not be decrying the offence but would probably be blaming her for following Islam

If a muslim actress was criticised because of her Islamic beliefs, there’s nothing at all wrong with that.

Just like people sending messages to the Pope about how bad catholicism is haven’t done anything wrong.

Spewing racist abuse towards someone is very different from criticising the beliefs they hold.

Maybe they didn’t speak up. Twitter and all social media needs to have rules about hate, racists or any phobic speech, simples.

Girl – there are certainly examples and indications that if your abuse comes from a (re)progressive / extreme-left side of the aisle the rules aren’t as stringently applied. I mean, just look who is on the twitter ‘safety’ (safe space) council.

Don’t laws about that sort of thing already exist? Can’t they apply per jurisdiction?

Dave, you may have taken my comment a bit too literally. Is she a movie star? by any stretch of the imagination no Is the movie any good? Don’t know or care. Should they have left the original Ghostbusters alone? Yes

Twitter and other social media exposes that racism actually exists and that it is prevalent.

In some cases racism is subtle. With the anonymity of certain social media, racism is less than subtle.

Racism is a sad reality. It exists.

Very few racists think that they are racists. Very few homophobes think that they are homophobes.

I think it’s actually more racist for people to play the race card.

If someone likened Rafael Nadal to an ape, no-one would bat an eye-lid. If Serena Williams was likened to an ape then there would be an outcry.

I didn’t see any tweets saying she was like a gorilla because she was black. People have just assumed it was because she was black, which means deep down they think black people are more like apes than white people. Quite a lot of the racism is coming from the offended people here
