IF YOU OWN A smartphone or tablet, then the likelihood of it using Gorilla Glass as its screen is pretty high.
The damage-resistant screen is used by more than 4.5 billion devices and can resist any scratches from items like keys. On the other hand, dropping it will usually lead to a cracked screen.
Corning, the company behind them, says that won’t be as big a problem with the latest version it’s developing. Gorilla Glass 5, will be able to survive a five foot (1.6 metre) fall onto hard surfaces “up to 80% of the time”.
That should mean if you’re using your new phone and it slips out of your hand, it stands a good chance of surviving the fall. Corning says that shattered screens is one of the biggest issues with consumers and says it can survive a face-down drop from shoulder-height.
While there are a few exceptions, Gorilla Glass is practically synonymous with smartphones, with many large companies like Samsung and HTC using it (others like Apple don’t specify what screens they use). The new glass is commercially available now and it should be included with new devices later this year.
While it’s primarily used with smartphone, Ford announced late last year that it would use a hybrid version of Gorilla Glass as a windshield for one of its supercars, the Ford GT.

Far more important than the brand of glass used in the phone is the owners ability- when they have dropped their phone- to cushion the phones fall by moving their foot underneath, without drop kicking the phone against the wall.

I use a polycarbonate container and it is effective. It adds to the size and bulk of the phone in a pockets but not as much as my beer belly does to my shape.
I wrap mine in bubble wrap. I usually don’t hear the phone ringing and and when I do I ne’er have it unwrapped in time but my phone is like new
I’ve wrapped a piece of string around my phone and placed a loop around my finger. The advantage is twofold. Not only is my phone saved from disaster by returning to my hand just before hitting the floor, it also draws admiring glances and mild applause from those present.
When I tried to cushion the drop on my Nokia I ended up in hospital with a broken foot
I dropped my Lenovo ultrabook on my foot and actually did end up in hospital.

It’s just a matter of time before the formula of unbreakable glass will be cracked…….

Great my new Nokia 5110 has a scratch.
The glass is not the expensive part. It’s the fact the digitizer is soldered to the glass as one expensive-to-replace unit that makes smashing the screen SO expensive on the latest slim phones (Apple and Samsung). I’d rather the phone was 1mm thicker and the glass cost €50 to replace, not €150!!
What is the price
I just accept the loss and budget about 80€ per year for a replacement screen. I don’t have to have it is a bulky case and I don’t worry about it. Also the better you get at catching with your foot the longer it is between new screens.
