Irish jobs and businesses 'already at risk over Brexit'

“This is now a full blown currency crisis.”

THE CURRENCY DIP suffered by Sterling after the Brexit vote is putting Irish jobs at risk, employers’ group Ibec says.

The group today demanded a decisive and immediate national response to the crash, which it says has left many key export businesses reeling.

Sterling has slumped since the 23 June vote, though it has held a consistent level over the last week.

An Ibec survey found that the negative exchange implications of the UK vote is by far the biggest concern of business. Almost half (45%) saw this as the main threat. Exporters are operating with a major competitive handicap in the UK market, while domestic firms are facing the prospect of cheaper UK imports grabbing market share. Further survey details below.

In a stark assessment, Ibec Director of Policy Fergal O’Brien said “The Brexit strain is manifest and intense. Without urgent action to address competitive pressures, hundreds of millions of euro worth of exports and thousands of Irish jobs will be lost.

Individual businesses have been slow to talk publicly, but the feedback from members is clear and unambiguous. Businesses and jobs are already under threat.

“This is now a full blown currency crisis.”

Separate economic analysis from Ibec also found that the impact on UK focused export sectors, such as agri-food, will be particularly severe. The analysis of the historical exchange rate and agri-food export relationship shows that a 1% weakness in sterling results in a 0.7% drop in Irish exports to the UK.

If sterling was to weaken further towards the £0.90 mark, this would translate to losses of over €700 million in food exports and about 7,500 Irish jobs in that sector alone.

Its a bad state of affairs when protests that are happening around the country everyday get waved off as some form of left wing lunacy. These are still residents who don’t want meters.

Straight off: I HATE THIS COMPANY. It represents all that is wrong with our countries business and political practices, both old and new. I would much rather fight against it than support it.

With that said, protests in public offices or installing isn’t going to stop them at this rate, but rather mass non payment. We had our last hurrah in March 21st and anything after is all in a mix of what’s left.

At this point the people have decided by either paying or dumping their bills, so anything from here on out seems a bit unnecessary to what needs to be ultimately accomplished.

I just hope the company bombs spectacularly, not that it hasn’t in the peoples eyes already.

I agree Paul .would love to know all on here you can’t see what a shambles iw is. Can have any confidence in a company who has a man in charge who has a dismal record. Who has ex county managers employed. Yet we are told councils neglected the system. How they have no worries about another quango when we have the HSE which is a disgrace because of mismanagement. How they have no concerns about millions squandered. Only conclusion I have is iw have raised so many red flags is some people just don’t care how something is run or managed as long as they support it because they have too or their party would look like fools.

Colm I got my bill this morning ah no I did not rush to pay it but I did rush to burn it in my fire place. Everyone should do the same because if you pay the next government are going to throw this out. So do not pay.

The bill stated water usage and if I was paying per litre it would have been€183 which is to expensive.

Enda and Joanie will be drowned out of office in the next general election over this expensive company. The cheek of Denis O,Brien looking for more money caused by the protest delaying the work.

Denis O,Brien is by the way a tax exile.

Non payment of a bill has legal consequences.
Mass correspondence from individuals questioning the nature of their contract with IW is required.
Non-action on receipt of a bill will presumably be considered to be acceptance by the courts.

    Paul,

It’s important to maintain an active and visible campaign to help counteract the mass of mainstream propaganda pushing the government and Irish Water’s agenda. This will help to give confidence to the middle ground of people who oppose the water charge/banker tax but may be intimidated or manipulated into paying the bill.

Water meter protests are a good way to build community solidarity. We’re also involved in street meetings, information stalls, leaflet drops, banner drops, knocking door to door etc. This is vital to build a mass grass roots movement of ordinary people to drive the government back as occurred during the successful water charges campaign in the 1990s.

The battle has been almost won against Irish water. It is a hated entity across all spectrums of society. The people are staying firm and saying no to this charge. The audacity of their procedures; forcing meters on householders; double and triple charging; bonus culture; appalling mismanagement; guillotining debate; using the gardai to protect a private utility has done us all a favour. We are no longer prepared to be bullied and politicians will face a tougher electorate in future. Well done all!!

Unfortunately many of the (urban( people affected by water taxes do not vote.
There will be an overwhelming vote for Alan Kelly and Michael Lowry in their own homeland where most ofthe people can draw water free from the ground, or in cheap communal schemes.
A huge vote which always votes is the public service unions and the countless quangos (Irish Water.?) associated with government largesse.
Teachers, Gardai etc will all turn out to maintain the repressive status quo which is driving our country almost to civil war, so divided as it is between a vast controlling bureaucracy which is still buying votes (with money still being borrowed) witness Brendan Howlin who is about to return all his comrades to their full, pre-austerity wage packets.
Hence the posturing about new threats of legal sanctions, such as attachment orders and so on to harass the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS who are boycotting Irish Water.
If Moanie Burton and her FG partners cannot extract enough cash from the weakest and lowest paid families in Ireland via regressive water taxation-then, Brendan Howlin’s promise to reinstate the minimal wage cuts inflicted on public servants, semi states workers and quango employees will be very difficult to implement. A lot of taxes will have to go to fixing our water infrastructure:
please read this article very carefully.
    http://www.villagemagazine.ie/index.php/2014/12/irelands-chimerical-competitiveness/
    By Constantin Gurdgiev (November 2014).
“Of the 196 appointments to state boards made by the current Coalition, only 35 resulted from open public competition. Pay increments for civil servants – for length of service not performance – remain in place. Only .75% of civil servants received less than three out of five in the October performance reviews which ground entitlements to the automatic pay increments. Meanwhile the country is on the march over Irish water and its bonus-for-nothing culture. The Regulator has set it a target of only 8% in cost reductions over the next few years. The percentage is paltry because it is obliged to maintain double the necessary workforce inherited from local authority staffs until 2025 – following a deal with the unions. John FitzGerald of the ESRI has said the extra wages and other costs for the 2000 extra staff amount to around €150m a year, or an extraordinary €90 per household. In recent weeks, the Government promised to deliver comprehensive reforms of the public sector. As before, there are vague targets for transforming the sector underpinning much less vague giveaways to insiders. In exchange for reversing pay cuts imposed in the two previous agreements with the unions, the State is promising some easing in the absurdly ineffective procedures for removing incompetent employees. The former is a tangible, enforceable and easily monitored commitment: either new pay flows or it does not. The latter is completely non-transparent and unenforceable. No-one, beyond senior civil servants, will ever have any real proof as to whether or not the new regime is working. No-one in the public service has any incentive to make sure it does. As pay, promotion and performance awards remain detached from actual productivity, no fine-tuning can ever deliver measurable gains in performance.

    Paul,

We don’t oppose using legal mechanisms where possible to protect ordinary people as you’ve outlined. However we believe that the courts will not ultimately protect the interests of the ordinary citizen. ‘Democracy’ and the legislation function has long been captured by the powerful and wealthy minority. The law is largely written by that elite and is constructed to protect those who benefit most from the status quo and serves the interests of capital over the wellbeing of the majority.
But people can protect themselves through unity and organization and a mass boycott of hundreds of thousands will make the courts simply unworkable as a weapon to be used against the campaign.

We live in a democracy despite Paul Murphy and other political opportunists best efforts. His interview with Pat Kenny a few weeks back showed him to be economically and logically very weak and lacking in a rounded political philosophy.
The decisions have been taken establishing Irish Water. It’s not universally popular but so have many other decisions. We had an election and will have another next year. People will have a choice then and although I don’t like taxes of any kind (laughingly neither do the left leaning politicians) I won’t be voting for candidates who advocate idiotic economics. If the budget doesn’t balance they won’t get my vote. That includes idiotic notions like wealth taxes but not property taxes, higher income taxes above 52% (56% for self employed) and medical cards for the well and well off.
What people want are lower taxes and logically therefore lower costs of government. Who will promise us that?

Yes I’ve seen some bad videos with stupid name calling and a lot of squaring off but they water meter installers play a part in that. In knocklyon they packed on the knocklyon road going into knockaire cause we were blocking it thus halting traffic and putting pressure on us to let them in. They refused to move when the guards asked them to and eventually the guards moved them off.

Well done to all the protestors. You are the guardians of democracy, that is government in the interests of the majority as opposed to the current system where the protection and advancement of a wealthy and powerful elite is the primary objective.

The water meters are another mechanism to make the citizens pay for the systemic collapse of speculative financial capitalism in 2008. This is why our Troika ‘partners’ made water charges a condition in their memorandum of understanding with the Irish government. The IMF & ECB could not care less about maintaining and upgrading our water network which is the fairytale justification for the charges peddled endlessly by establishment. We could be all drinking slurry as far as Mario Draghi is concerned. What Mario is interested in though is the €1.2 billion + that the Irish citizens currently pay annually to run the water and sewerage systems.

If the water charges are successfully enforced, then this €1.2 billion annual revenue stream can instead be diverted to meet the repayments on Ireland’s ‘bailout’ loans (plus interest) used to directly cover private and illegitimate banking debt. In this way the EU & IMF gets to have the Eurozone banking system stabilized at the expense of the Irish people and we get to pay for the privilege through Water charges, Home tax, USC, Health & Education cutbacks, Pension levy and the extra 3 years added to our working lives etc etc etc..

The ultimate purpose of Irish Water is to create an attractive entity for future privatization continuing the neo liberal economic agenda which is tearing the social fabric of the country apart. It cost €150 million for consultants to advise Irish Water who will spend an additional €600+ million installing water meters so that they can charge us again for the water supply we already pay for through general taxation. The remarkably remunerated consultants and generous blueshirt benefactor Denis O Brien’s well equipped meter installation crews are paid from the National Pension Reserve Fund and the Property/Home tax which was allegedly destined to fund local services but that promise turned out to be another transparent FG & Labour lie.

The mass mobilizations of ordinary people have driven the government back temporarily on their privatisation agenda but there is no room for complacency. We need to bury Irish water permanently or risk our water infrastructure ultimately being sold to private operators (where Mr. O Brien is likely to feature again) to generate another lump sum to pay for the bank bailout. From that point on, the free market privateers will charge the citizens handsomely for our water and will have that glorious opportunity because of the initial failure of the free market in the banking sector.

It’s an ingenious neo liberal Catch 22 and we are the chumps.

It’s time for the people to stand up now and refuse to allow the ransacking of the country to continue. Boycott the Water charge. Can’t pay. Won’t pay.

@Waddler The guardians of democracy are an Garda Siochana who without them standing in the firing line from the thugs above would have brought absolute anarchy… oh wait a minute that’s what ye want.

The AAA and the socialists and their ilk, their policies have failed in every country they have been implemented.. they are peddling easy answers and a magic wand to all peoples problems. The people they are peddling to are easily susceptible to your rhetoric and BS.. but that’s where it ends.
    AAA bullsh*t 101 =
    1. print as much money as we like with no consequence – why should we ever be austere?
    2. Pay for nothing as someone else will pay, create entitlement – “the other guy is stealing from you.. i mean he has a big house why shouldn’t you?”
    3. Working class don’t actually work… “you’re entitled to higher benefits as long as you like.. its everyone else’s fault that you’re where you are”. –
    4. Anyone in business is an enemy because they have our money – i mean we gave it to them – right guys?

Nonsense Gabbi. The Gardai are no protectors of democracy. The primary role of all police forces is to enforce the will of the state on civil society. Therefore they are often used as a tool to oppress and control the working class whose interests are diametrically opposed to those of the government’s who largely serves the interest of capital.

The R.U.C beating the civil rights movements off the streets in the North while their counterparts in the U.S. murdered and batoned black people senseless as they struggled to gain equality. From the brutality of Thatcher’s police deployed against the striking miners in Britain to the French police murdering 600 Algerians in Paris.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/charlie-hebdo-paris-attack-brothers-campaign-of-terror-can-be-traced-back-to-algeria-in-1954-9969184.html

At home we have the example of the heroic Dunnes Stores strikers from the 1980s who refused to handle goods from South Africa. They were met with continuous threats and harassment from the Gardai including the special branch and were regularly abused for daring to show solidarity with those “n*****s”.

More recently, the students were beaten off the streets in 2011 for daring to protest. In a moment of supreme irony that day, the Gardai mounted a cavalry charge right in front of Anglo Irish Bank HQ against unarmed students protesting against the mounting cutbacks to their education in order to pay for the greed, stupidity and corruption of that bank. These are just a couple of examples. There are many, many more if you care to look.

It’s unjust that the resource we need to live is now being treated like Oil, and used to benefit an elite.

It has a man in charge with a dismal record. It has ex county managers who according to government councils neglected the system. Its a quango. Another HSE in the making. We all know how bad that is with its mismanagement. So why so much confidence in iw.

    Tweety.

You do realise that first of all we have been paying for our water out of taxation for years.

Secondly, this is just laying down the foundations to privatise the service, at which point you won’t be ‘paying for your water use’ you’ll be paying to fund profit margins of these companies, with little money actually going into our water infrastructure.

Your comments also seem to indicate that people that are working have no problem with paying this charge. The vast majority of people I am friends with are working in some capicity or another, and not a single one of them agrees with the water charges.

Alan & See My Vest…. for you and everyone else comparing this to the USC and pension levy scams, try to remember there’s one very big difference… the reason they’re still trying to force the joke that is IW on you is so that they can privatise the water. Think about that and what it actually means. It’s not just a buzz word. Privatisation means a company will be given actual ownership of the water in this country. Let’s just remind ourselves for a minute what water actually is… Water flows through the blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients to cells and flushing wastes out of our bodies. It cushions our joints and soft tissues. Without water as a routine part of our intake, we cannot digest or absorb food.

This is what you would call absolute power. They may as well own the blood in your veins. The price they quote you now is irrelevant. The issue is ownership.

You mean by making speeches such as this? I think you will find that Joan Collins and other anti-austerity TD’s and activists have been quite vocal about the unfairness of the USC and Pension Levy.

Deputy Joan Collins: “When the Government which consisted of Deputies from Fianna Fáil, the Green Party, the Progressive Democrats, the Fianna Fáil gene pool and Deputy Lowry introduced this tax, it should have been honest with people and called it the “universal anti-social charge”. Like many of those present, I canvassed at doorsteps during the recent general election campaign and this was one of the main issues about which the people of Dublin South-Central were boiling mad. The universal social charge must be one of the most hated measures to have been introduced by any Government. The people of my constituency have no problem paying their taxes — they are prepared to do so — but they think everybody else should be doing likewise. It is incredible that the wealthy pay taxes in America, the most capitalist country in the world, whereas the wealthy in this country are protected by Government policies. I have to say that although I support the call for the abolition of this charge, I find nothing progressive in the health and income levies. I would be absolutely opposed to their reintroduction, particularly as far as those on low and moderate incomes are concerned.”

I might be unwelcome to the likes of you who want to just have a rant based on their own anti establishment biases, but nothing I said was not fact based and accurate. If you were upset by the language used (moron or idiot?) you should hear what the “peaceful protesters” shout at the Gardai and Irish Water staff. I’m opposed to Irish Water and the corrupt way it was set up and will be run, but those clowns getting themselves arrested are what drives working people away from what could be an effective campaign if they didn’t get carried away with their self righteousness after they collect their social welfare payments. It’s a pity more reasonable people wouldn’t dilute the rubbish that’s spouted on these forums.

There are many online resources you can research in order to understand the correct process in relation to minor public order offences at summary level.

By way of well intentioned advice only, there is an inverse proportion between misunderstanding and throwing out invective about people being idiots and morons. I disagree with many people posting comments but instances of idiots or idiots and morons are rare, even exceptional.

I have a splendid idea for Irish Water – Why not concentrate on the people that want to pay instead of wasting tax payers money sending out bills to people that don’t want to pay. There are people that are pleading with Irish Water to send them the bills as they are anxious to pay. Make water charges permanent to people who say yes and scrap it for those who say no. That’s the problem solved.

What planet are you living on?When Kelly got elected on lying promises in 2011 he was elected in the 3 seat constituency of North Tipperary .South Tipperary also elected 3 T.D.s . Now the whole county is 1 constituency and with a large portion of North Tipperary now consigned to the Offaly constituency. Labour has always had a battle to hold a seat in North Tipp.Winning and loosing every second election and failing to get a candidate elected in the 3 elections prior to Liar Kelly coming on the scene backed by the faithful Labour members to whom he made the promises of no household tax and no water charges which formed a big part of The Labour Party pre election manifesto. In the local elections held since ywith the whole county as one Labour lost every one of the sitting Co.Council Members. Electing only 1 who was a newcomer

His Cash helped Alan Kelly to get elected as a member of the European Parliment from which he resigned to stand for the last Dail election in 2011. He was replaced in Europe on the nominated sub rule by M/S Phil Prendergast who was in turn heavily defeated in the last European election and hasn’t been heard of since . And bye the way she was his sub in spite of the fact that she was a defeated Dail candidate in the 2011 election due to lack of support for Labour in South Tipperary.

Gardai at Garda rank don’t decide themselves to just go and arrest those protesters, but when they interfere with lawful work being carried out by tax paying workers then they’re subject to arrest and the rigours of the law. You suggest that the mob can be allowed to obstruct anything they so please because they’re “peaceful” protesters. What next? Stop the ESB fixing wires because they charge too much? Stop Post men because stamps are gone awful dear? People work for the government all over the country – are they Denis O Brien flunkies too? Nurses, doctors?
