A GARDA GAVE chase in Dublin today after a pregnant woman had her phone snatched.
The incident happened at around 12.50pm at the Luas stop at Smithfield.
The mobile phone was snatched from the pregnant woman’s hand, and the assailant fled the scene.
A garda who was nearby and who observed the theft pursued the man by running after him. The garda caught the man and returned the phone to the woman.
Arrested
The man was arrested and is being detained at Bridewell Garda Station.
Last year, mobile phones were the most commonly stolen item, with nearly 60% of thefts and robberies involving mobile phones.
Last year, almost €3 million worth of mobile phones were stolen.
The gardaí strongly recommend that mobile phone owners record details of their IMEI number.
This number can be blocked on the networks, rendering the phone useless.

Theft and resisting arrest. My money is on a litany of convictions and will get a suspended sentence.
You’d recommend jail for a non-violent minor theft?
Jail – no. UK type Community Service is the answer – based on the old US chain gang principle. Tough, long and thought provoking – and successful. And cheap for the tax payer; after a couple of months of it, the next available phone will be ignored!
Just as cheap is the electronic ankle bracelet – with a curfew. Go out – go to jail!

And there are many other alternatives – not even considered here. For example, your driving licence can be temporarily cancelled as punishment for a minor theft (in Australia) – and it concentrates the mind! Here, jail is the only option – causing easy/suspended sentences to be the norm.

Why is there not an article yet in the journal about a politician who was arrested in mitchelstown on a public order offence, spat at Gardai when arrested and later re arrested for alleged drunk driving . Every news network has it. The journal is quick enough to publish if a Garda receives any form of compensation for a work related injury .

Does blocking an imei really render the phone useless? Surely those Chinese shops can totally wipe a phone and get around that somehow?
You can do it yourself most of the time for a fraction of what they’re charging. It’s actually illegal though to change a phones imei though…

Funny that . Yesterday on Essex street west three civilians did the same thing . Minus the arrest! Guarantee more of the public are involved in recovery of mobile phones than the Gardai . It’s sadly a very common occurrence in the city centre .
Never understand why they say you should record your imei. The operator logs it when the phone is turned on.
All stolen phones should just be blacklisted to stop thief, but unfortunately that infringes on the data rights of the thief!
