Irishman arrested in Rio on suspicion of ticket touting

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is providing consular assistance.

AN IRISHMAN HAS been arrested in Rio de Janeiro on suspicion of ticket touting at the Olympics.

It’s reported that he was arrested at a hotel on Friday after allegedly selling tickets at above face value for the opening ceremony of the games.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is providing consular assistance.

The Brazilian newspaper Estadao reports that the judge in the case issued a warrant for a search of the man’s possessions.

The man has been refused bail and is being held at a detention centre in Rio.

I have just tried to park my car on the north circular road, and a rather weathered looking chap wearing a bright yellow Dublin city council jacket offers to look after it, if I give him €10. Is that a form of touting?

Not that I’m any fan of scalpers but.. the police in Rio, one of the most dangerous cities in the world, are looking for people selling tickets rather than than those who are stabbing, mugging and kidnapping?

Loads of things unexplained in this article. I can look up How many tickets was he touting and the margin he scalped people for. But, on the streets of Rio? How come he wasn’t mugged? And is this *why* so many events are low on an audience? The London Olympics had a raffle system, was that maybe fairer to people booking tickets?
