AIB's First Trust refunds £350,000 to customers over fee error

Thousands of customers are receiving a refund, after the bank mistakenly added certain charges to exempt accounts.

AIB’S NORTHERN IRELAND operation First Trust is refunding £347,187 to thousands of customers who were incorrectly charged fees.

The bank said that the issue affects 8,805 customers and the average refund is £40 and includes compensatory interest.

The issue arose when the bank manually added fees to certain accounts which should have been exempt from the charges, and First Trust has apologised to the customers affected by the error.

In May, AIB announced it was refunding €8.3 million including compensatory interest to people who had unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw cash from ATMs and had their accounts debited.

The bank said that new anti-fraud measures had meant that some accounts were debited for withdrawals in which customers had not actually received the cash.

    the money was just resting in their account. odd there’s rarely a bank error in your favour

    Had the exact same issue with Ulster Bank, took a year to get resolved even though I went into the bank about 6 times. Ended up getting a threatening call from them, when I told them that they had messed up the girl on the phone told me that she could see from the account that I graduated when I was 10.
    They never compensated me for the interest they charged me. Never even apologized. They are a joke, shouldn’t have been bailed out and they still play games with the account holders because they know they will get away with it. They make more money screwing you over in the first place than they pay in fines when they are caught.
    No incentive to play by the rules.

    Don’t worry they are all at it. I’ve had 2 refunds from boi and I’m looking into a more serious one that will hopefully turn out to be nothing or it might be everything
