Ireland's breast cancer mortality among highest in OECD

A new OECD report on worldwide health standards shows that Ireland has the third-highest mortality rate of 34 developed countries.

IRELAND HAS ONE of the highest mortality rates from breast cancer in the developed world, according to a major new report from the OECD.

The ‘Health at a Glance’ report for 2011 shows that of the 34 developed countries which are members of the organisation, Ireland has the third-highest mortality rate from the condition.

In Ireland, breast cancer accounts for 26.1 deaths per 100,000 of the population – with only women in Denmark (28.6) and Belgium (26.7) more likely to succumb to the disease. The average mortality rate was 20.1 per 100,000 population.

Ireland’s standing in prostate cancer was little better, with the eighth-highest mortality rate – at 25.9 deaths per 100,000, above the average of 22.4.

Lung cancer mortality is just below the OECD average, at 50 deaths per 100,000 compared to the average of 52.

Ireland’s overall cancer mortality rate was relatively close to the 34-country average, at 218 deaths per 100,000 population versus the average of 208.

Deaths as a result of stroke were significantly lower (at 41) in Ireland than the average, at 84 – though Ireland was higher than the average in deaths from heart disease – at 137 per 100,000 ahead of the average of 117.

Irish people are statistically less likely to die in transport accidents than those in other countries, with 5.1 deaths versus the global average of 8.2. The reduction in road fatalities in Ireland is among the best in the 34 countries surveyed.

Life expectancy at birth in Ireland, at 80.0 years, is slightly higher than the average of 79.5.

@Michael Williams: Irish streets should be named after where the go or what they do. Never had a problem with Dublin road in Galway, or main Street in letterkenny, but start making them after vanity tributes (like the roundabouts in Longford) is just stupid. They died for a cause, and all that’s left of them is a cul de sac in fettercairn.

I was appalled at what happened to this woman. I still am. I am also appalled that people are intent on making her a poster child for abortion when Ireland’s abortion laws were not the reason she died. She died because the people who were supposed to be monitoring her failed to diagnose or even recognise septicemia. The misrepresentation of this woman’s plight and the loss that her husband and family suffered as a result of clinical and systemic failings in our health system is disgusting.

Antis squeal septicemia at the mere mention of Savita’s name. They don’t ask how the infection was allowed to take hold and flourish, though. The heartbeat of an unviable 17 week old foetus was given priority during the miscarriage. Once that was present, there was no option but to leave the healthy sentient, adult woman’s uterus wide open for days, letting infection take hold and killing her. Ireland’s anti woman, antichoice laws killed Savita. But to some in this country, dead women are preferable to dead foetuses.

@Thomas McGilly: from an original causation point of new, the causa causans was a 3 day dilated cervix due to unwillingness to terminate a non viable foetus waiting for the heart beat to expire. The unavailability of a termination was due to an interpretation of the 8th Amendment. It was legal confusion contributing to bad medicine.

The infection resulting from the dilated cervix was not properly addressed by the timely administration of sufficient antibiotics in sufficient dosage but the original source of infection was the dilated cervix which remained dangerously open for 3 days because of the unwillingness to effect a termination of an unviable foetus.

Foetal obsession operated as a distraction from sound clinical care.

@Tony Daly: A number of points. It has been pointed out on a number of occasions that a termination in cases such as Savita’s had been carried out before. The law wasn’t bad, the interpretation was. In any case, the law has been clarified through the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act. Second, the timely administering of antibiotics was key here, not the termination (which could have legally occured). Had Savita’s condition been monitored more closely, the signs would have been identified earlier and the antibiotics administered in a timely manner. Third and final point, it was not “foetal obsession” which acted as a distraction. The distraction was a poor system of observation and monitoring and human failure to execute good clinical care.
