TDS MICK WALLACE and Clare Daly are among a group of people who have launched a “secure and anonymous” whistleblowing website: Namaleaks.
In a statement issued today, Wallace said the website “will allow for anyone who has been unfairly treated or who has witnessed poor practice by Nama, or by any investment funds currently operating within Ireland, to securely and anonymously deliver information relating to same”.
Nama was set up in 2009. It took on billions of euro worth of property development loans. Questions have been raised about its practices, particularly in relation to its Northern Ireland loan book.
In his statement, Wallace said namaleaks.com is “the first of its kind in Ireland, both in terms of security and anonymity”.
The Independents4Change TD said the website was created with the assistance of US-based Freedom of the Press Foundation, as well as experts who work closely with whistleblower Edward Snowden.
There are several ways to contact namaleaks.com, depending on the level of security and anonymity you require. You can communicate and deliver information/documents via encrypted email or encrypted mobile text … If you wish to remain completely anonymous, namaleaks.com provides instructions on how to set up an anonymous email account in order to contact us.
This project is also supported by Frank McDonald, author and former environment editor of the Irish Times; Julien Mercille, assistant professor at UCD’s School of Geography, Planning & Environmental Policy and columnist; and Cormac Butler, an equity and options trader who has previously worked with KPMG and PWC.
“All information received will be checked, cross-checked and evaluated by the team of five [people] as mentioned above, who will utilise any further necessary expertise, before deciding how best to use the information,” the statement reads.
‘Secret society’
It continues: “Since its inception in 2009, Nama has, to quote An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, operated as a “secret society”.
“Much information has already come to our attention which highlights serious problems in relation to how Nama has operated – there is little doubt but that the best interests of the people of Ireland have not always been served by this State organisation.
Despite the fact that many worrying issues regarding Nama have been brought to the attention of the Government and the Opposition, on the floor of the Dáil, there remains a stubborn reluctance to hold Nama to account, or properly address the serious concerns through a Commission of Investigation.
“Namaleaks.com intends to do what Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour do not want to do, that is, hold Nama to account in the interests of the people of Ireland.”
A spokesperson for Nama said they would not be commenting about the website.
A Fianna Fáil spokesperson said the party “believes it is sensible to allow the investigations that are ongoing to be completed before a Commission of Investigation is commenced”.
The ongoing investigations remain at a very sensitive stage. We have to be honest and learn from the IBRC inquiry that was initiated over a year ago, but still has not got off the ground due to legal concerns. Deputy Wallace is well aware of the legal challenges.

It’s also great to see collaboration between some of our politicians and the admirable organisation Freedom Of The Press Foundation which contains heroes like Daniel Ellsberg and Pulitzer prize-winning journalists Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald. They’ve done very important work against the Obama administration who NYTimes reporter James Risen described as “the greatest enemy to press freedom in a generation”.
Seems it going to cover financial institutions as well.

@fred I admire your observations but would ask , did you read the pensions paid to retired non serving politicians. €11,500 per month. Could you set up tax ex politicians pensions by 85 % . I admire observations that deal with unjust elites but really you comments are nothing more than an elite flicker of slander while the vulgar elites collect €11,500 of pension and Ireland stays muted.

O’Flynn the developer never paid one cent of the 1.8 billion he borrowed from the banks, the tax payer did. What O’Flynn done, and was allowed to get away with is far and above anything Mick Wallace done. But Wallace is a thorn in the government’s side, whereas O’Flynn is one of the well connected.

You should also contact Michael Lowry, Finian McGrath, Noel Grealish, the Healy-Rae clan and the Greens, seeing that they all propped up the Government that created NAMA.
Every one of those Independent (except Jackie Healy-Rae, who was replaced by two sons) is still in the Dail and would like to think we have forgotten their involvement.
NAMA was setup by FF with no objections from FG. It’s first priority was to bailout politicial dynasty’s, judges and Ireland’s elite who would have lost everything if NAMA did not buy there loans then sell them back to the same people for next to nothing. It was a secret bailout paid for by society at large. Hotels sold back to family members for a euro was common place. It was all legal even if it was done behind closed doors that is why anyone from NAMA found guilty will be given a suspended sentence. Some developers may have being thrown under the bus but they in turn ruined many many sole traders who lost everything home, business some even lost their lives. It’s another scandal by a secret society who always land on there feet. It’s how this country works curropt crony’s who are above the law will never ever face justice. Whistleblowers will be discredited just like they are in the gardai, civil service, health service and charity sector.

But there’s still a lot of stock left in Nama’s portfolio and if there is to be an independent inquiry then any relevant information will be helpful in uncovering the paper trail.

Given the amounts of money involved and the raison d’être for Nama’s creation in the first instance one has to ask the obvious question:

No, we should act where we’ll see success rather than messing our panties over an issue which has long been done, dusted and the bodies buried.
Fair enough, but could we have a Mickleaks site for balance too. Any information relating to Mick withholding his employee’s pension payments, engaging in nepotism, looking after his own businesses, family and friends at our expense, scyving off to go to sports tournaments when he should be doing work we’re paying him for, lobbying NAMA to favour himself and his developer mates in their deals etc could be posted anonymously by concerned citizens.
Website says the purpose of Namaleaks is to uncover injustice and bad practice….that’s not a meaningful purpose …. Uncover to what end? What are they going to do with the information? Can’t go public unless very clear documented evidence. Encouraging many to act illegally by disclosing confidential info?
Will Wallace and Daly be privy to the information disclosed? Should provide legislative protection to whistleblowers under existing legislation first. There is a right way and a wrong way to do this…. This seems only to serve the politics of the TDs involved….. not to right any wrongs.

I just posted to Nama leaks. Bought a shack off them a while back and the plumbing is atrocious.
Hopefully Claire and Mick will be out with the tools. Very hopeful for a great service. Will let you know how it all works out !
