Newborn twins among 3,000 rescued from rubber boats at sea

Nearly 6,500 people risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea on Monday.

FIVE-DAY-OLD twins were among 3,000 people rescued from 20 rubber dinghies and several wooden boats in the Mediterranean sea.

The pair were saved by a search and rescue vessel run by Médecins Sans Frontiéres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams on Monday.

MSF’s Medical Team Leader onboard Dignity 1, Antonia Zemp, described how the twins were premature babies delivered at 8 months and were just five days old when rescued.

The mother was traveling alone. One of the boys was not well. He was vomiting, had hypothermia and non-reactive. After a first triage, our medical team decided to request an evacuation due to the fact that his health was so fragile that he would not have survived the long journey to Italy in our boat.

“We transferred both mother and twins to another vessel that could evacuate them to shore.”

Nearly 6,500 people risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea on Monday, while a further 3,000 migrants were rescued from the Strait of Sicily yesterday during 30 different rescue missions.

MSF’s medical teams treated people who were exhausted and experiencing bloody diarrhea, dehydration, fever, hypothermia, and skin diseases.

Doctors Without Borders field coordinator Nicholas Papachrysostomou said:

This shows that the EU’s response to the crisis at and within its borders has failed to address the urgent humanitarian and protection needs of refugees and migrants.

More than 3,167 people have already lost their lives in the Mediterranean in 2016 according to IOM and UNHCR figures.

“The EU needs to put in place measures that will provide safe and legal alternatives for refugees and migrants to access the assistance and protection they are desperately seeking.”

Firstly let me say I do not hate anyone, I do not like that people are trying to take advantage of our welfare systems in Europe but I do hate the fact that people who have been paying into that system all their working lives are being told that there are cut backs and so they cannot get the benefits they were promised. I will also put on record my fear that sharia will destroy everything I hold dear, freedom, music, poetry etc . If you took the time look into it you might have some concerns yourself. I mentioned taqiyya which everyone should be aware of and then there there is the age of consent and the treatment of women and divine right of men to satisfy their sexual urges. Is it too much to ask that people look these things up before defending this system ?

They already do. If you are a Syrian refugee residing in a Turkish refugee camp you can apply for legal asylum in a number of EU countries through facilities made available in these camps.

The EU has no responsibility to offer an alternative.

It’s not Turkey who are doing it Garb. It’s EU representatives within the Turkish refugee camps that are handling asylum applications and vetting the applicants.

Morality doesn’t keep the lights on unfortunately. Where are we going to house millions of migrants who don’t speak the languages of Europe, have poor educational backgrounds and come from a culture which is in many respects 150+ years behind our own?

That’s right, we’ll throw them into the cheap areas where there’s already excessively high levels of unemployment, crime and social issues.

Jason, the reality of applying through unhcr is that people can be waiting for 10 years. People in camps are prioritised while most refugees from Syria are urban refugees. If the surrounding host countries legally permitted work then that might be a significant removal of the reasons for travelling to Europe.

I am totally sick of bleeding hearts making excuses under a humanitarian flag about the invasion of Europe. Those fleeing war are not risking their lives by crossing The Mediterranean, only those who can afford to pay traffickers huge amounts are getting here and most of them are dodging conscription leaving the elderly to fend for themselves and without an army at that. When sharia takes hold it will be too late to release what you have promoted being unleashed on the rest of us. Please just simply Google the word “taqiyya” before you defend the happy smiling people you know from a different culture.

Personally, I prefer to judge each individual point on its own merits, rather than what the person making it has said or done in the past. The Nazis were very ahead of their time with regards to their anti-smoking campaigns and animal rights laws for example. I wouldn’t say the credibility of those things were diminished just because of other things that happened in Nazi Germany at the time.

You really are vile. You’d lie about a man who lost his family just to further your own greedy xenophobic agenda.

The family stayed in Syria for much of the beginning of the Civil war, having moved around to avid it the eventually moved to Turkey, moved back to Syria to their home town and then once more returned to Turkey when that was attacked by ISIS. Their original aim was to join other family members in Canada, but that application was rejected. The tragic trip was nothing to do with teeth, which was a claim made by a right-wing Australian politician and parroted with much mirth by people like you who are happy to swallow whatever anti-foreigner s__t is fed to you by trash sites like Breitbart. What was the reasoning for their application being rejected Phil?

From my memory, the Canadian government rejected the application on the basis that the required forms from the Turkish government confirming the family’s status as refugees in Turkey did not exist.

I would think that an official refugee working in Turkey would have the correct paperwork, given the complicated procedures involved in securing a working permit in Turkey as a Syrian refugee (as evident by the fact that less than 1% of Syrian refugees in Turkey possess one).

He should hang his head in shame for being responsible for the death of his entire family. The source of the “teeth” story was his own sister in Canada.
