Woman in critical condition after attack by cow which left pet dog dead

The incident happened on a popular lakeland beauty spot on Lough Erne, Co Fermanagh.

A WOMAN IS in a critical condition after sustaining a bizarre injury following a cow attack in Fermanagh.

The incident happened earlier this week on Devenish Island on Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh.

It’s understood that the woman in question had moored her boat on the island and gone for a walk with a family dog.

The reasons for the cow attacking are not known.

The family dog died a short time after the incident, while the woman sustained serious back injuries.

Enniskillen RNLI subsequently attended the scene, and called for a helicopter evacuation by the Irish Coast Guard.

“One of the crew stayed with the lady who had suffered back injuries while paramedics were transferred by the boat from the mainland,” a RNLI spokesperson said.

“Rescue 118, the Coast Guard helicopter stationed in Sligo, was dispatched by request of the Belfast Coast Guard to airlift the woman to South West Acute Hospital in nearby Enniskillen, following an incident with an animal,” a Coast Guard spokesman said.

She has since been moved to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Her current condition is unknown.

“We’re unaware of where the person was from,” said local DUP councillor Keith Elliott.

My understanding is that she was sightseeing, had moored her boat and was walking around the island with her pet.
She’s in a critical condition in hospital I believe. Obviously we would all be hoping that she make a speedy recovery.

That would be a normal response from a cow. They don’t like dogs, exception being a farmers dog they would be familiar with.

I have often seen dogs barking at cows and the cows making a run at the dog. Maybe that’s what happened and the poor woman just got hit trying to pick up her dog. Get it away from the cow.

Oh would you stop being so right on.. obviously no one finds the situation funny, and everyone would hope the poor woman is ok.

Neither cracking stupid jokes, or expressing concern on the internet are going to either help or harm her.

Ah poor woman! I hope she’ll be ok! My mom once got chased by a cow, it was very scary. She lives in France and got out of the car on the way to Andorra, to pick a few rocks on the hillside for her garden. Suddenly, she saw a cow coming closer and closer, looking at her, and then the cow charged at her. She started running away from it and seriously thought she would’ve been killed. She was without a dog, but the cows had calves so maybe it was trying to protect it.

Cows with very young calves are far more dangerous than any bull, I have seen one with my own eyes who was separated from her calf too early and she went completely beserk. Jumping walls and taking half them with her. Nobody dared try to catch her for fear of being killed. I am sorry for the poor dog but I hope the woman makes a full recovery and soon.

True, especially some of the modern continental breeds like simmentals and limousins. There was a county councillor from Longford (I think) on the radio during the week, calling for extermination of pine martens because one bit a woman in a henhouse. I wonder will he be calling for cows to be exterminated after this incident?

There is only one way the cow could have gotten close enough to the dog to injure it is if the dog attacked. I just wonder why the dog breed type is not mentioned. Sounds like something a bully breed would do but we don’t want to offend their owners…
