Questions on drink driving will be added to the driver theory test

Between 2008 and 2012, alcohol was a factor in 38% of fatal collisions, claiming the lives of 286 people.

THE ROAD SAFETY Authority (RSA) has announced that new questions on drink driving will be added to the theory test.

The decision to add the questions was taken after worrying research by the RSA this year which showed drink driving is still a significant problem in Ireland, particularly among young people.

From 10 October, the main driver theory test bank will have 17 new questions on alcohol and driving. Two of these questions will be presented in each of the tests, though the overall format of the test will not change.

The new questions are based on the recent RSA report. They cover areas like:

  • Which gender is more likely to drink and drive and be involved in a fatal crash
  • Which type of collision is a drink driver in a fatal collision more likely to be in
  • How the use of alcohol affected a person’s decision to use a seatbelt
  • What the minimum blood alcohol level is for a learner or novice driver
  • The number of people killed by a driver who had consumed alcohol.

The RSA pre-crash report on alcohol showed that between 2008 and 2012, alcohol was a factor in 38% of fatal collisions, claiming the lives of 286 people.

43% of drivers killed who had consumed alcohol were between 16 and 24 years old.

Moyagh Murdock, Chief Executive of the RSA, said it is vital that young people understand the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol, “no matter how little the amount consumed”.

The report we issued earlier this year dispels the myth that this killer behaviour is a thing of the past. It’s not – it is very much still present in communities throughout the country. What’s even more worrying is the number of young people who are dying on our roads because of alcohol. We need to use every opportunity we can to help new drivers to understand the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

Candidates are advised to use the current versions of the supporting learning materials (The Official Driver Theory Test book and CD, 5th or 6th edition) in addition to this PDF with information on the new section related to drink driving.

What gender is most likely to drink and drive. What a stupid question. Putting on lipstick while driving also causes accidents. Which gender is most likely to put on lipstick while driving?

I was wondering how many comments would pass before someone pointed that out. If the answer to a gender based question was female or any of the aray of makey up genders there would be protests on the streets.

You can dispel the myths that still persist around it being ok to drive after a pint or two and that you can still be intoxicated the morning after.
A lot of people still seem to think of drink driving as driving only when you’re too drunk to stand.

Of all thee people I know who drink I don’t think I could pick out one who never drove while over the limit.
The problem with drink driving is generally young men driving home drunk and showing off, but unfortunately I imagine very few of these are the ones who make up drink driving convictions, most convictions are probably in slow moving morning traffic. This is good (easy) for gardai and convictions but bad for reducing fatalities.

I’m always amazed at the actual statistics. 2 billion road journeys made in Ireland each year, resulting in 127 fatalities, 210, serious incidents, 4500 minor tips. If anyone took a calculator to this as a risk analysis it wouldn’t compute it that infinitesimal a figure. So why the hyper boil. Is it just project fear again, is it beurocrats keeping a job and pension? What’s for sure is mental health issues kills five tines more in suicide – but you don’t get revenue from that.. Red thumb by all means, but I did have to rationalise my own fathers road death, and you can’t legislate for chance or stupidity.. But it appears project fear is pointed at something we do quite well and that’s drive to work and for work..

The reason for increase in crashes is smart phones, to many people have their eyes on a screen and even a driver crosses the road markings and hits on coming car my money be on that driver to was on their phone to not to see the on coming car crossing over. And the worst thing about phones is the Garda only over with a phone in their hand. Smart phones are worst thing since cigarettes, go any were now friends, couples bar/restaurants half the time on their phones, go to park on our phones. kids playing parents on their phones, pushing their prams on their phones, If we are that addictive to some thing that we can not give our children attention or our loved and friends, there is no doubt that when we are driving we are using them.

Smart phones are great but it is addiction we must admit to “nomophobia” (short for no-mobile-phone phobia)

Technically you can still drink and drive here. Why not just ban it altogether instead of complicating it further with impractical jargon like this.

The legal limits for fully licenced drivers in Category B are:

50 milligrammes (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (0.05)
67 milligrammes (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine or
22 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath
The legal limits for professional, learner and novice drivers are:

20 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (0.02)
27 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine or
9 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath

Between white wine sauces, sherry trifles or chocolate liqueurs you’d have a lot of people accidentally having a small amount of alcohol in their system.

Those amounts listed are so small even 1 glass of wine or pint would be over the limit.

Exactly, current limits are there to allow for small amounts of alcohol that may be present in some products, not to allow people to go out for a shnakey one because they’re grand after one.

Well this takes the biscuit. What type of ” egeats” are looking after the theory tests. Do the not see that all the crap that they have come up with over the last five or six years have not made any difference to the end result . More people are passing the driving test, but the standard of driving by young people has not improved, it probably has slipped. Continuous white lines have no significance, yellow lines on the left, well they appear to think that this indicates a slow lane. Yield to traffic from your right, well now that is something from the past. In conclusion, the standards have slipped drastically over the last few years.
