THE DIRECTOR OF a crisis pregnancy clinic in Dublin has today repeated controversial claims a staff member made about links between abortion and breast cancer.
A recent investigation by The Times (Ireland edition) involved secretly recording a consultation in the clinic between a staff member and a woman seeking advice on a crisis pregnancy.
During the consultation, the staff member can be heard telling the woman that terminating a pregnancy increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer and also their risk of suicide.
Speaking to Joe Duffy on RTÉ’s Liveline earlier today, director of The Women’s Centre on Berkeley Street, Patrick Jameson, claimed abortion is “the single-most preventative cause of breast cancer”.
“Even rats get breast cancer after abortion,” he said, referring to scientific trials.
The single most protective thing a woman can do to prevent breast cancer is to have a live baby.
When challenged on the issue, he told Duffy: “You can’t handle the truth”. People in Ireland are “being deceived because of the media spin”, he claimed.
Jameson also told Duffy a “woman after abortion is one of the most dangerous situations for suicide”.
One of the highest groups for suicide is women who’ve had abortions.
Consultant obstetrician Peter Boylan also spoke on the show, telling the presenter women should be reassured that they are not at a higher risk of breast cancer after a termination – and there is respected scientific research to support that.
The risk of suicide is also not increased by a termination of a pregnancy – that’s another thing that needs to be debunked.
“Any arguments in relation to their rejection of abortion should be based on fact and not on scaremongering,” he added.
Jameson rejected research referenced by the consultant, instead repeatedly directing listeners to two websites that he said linked to studies supporting his claims.
He said women who go for abortions are entitled to be informed about these issues.
Meanwhile, another clinic based on Berkeley Street, Reproductive Choices, sought to distance itself from the controversy.
In a statement, the health clinic said it wanted to clarify it had no connection with The Women’s Centre, which is located nextdoor.
“Reproductive Choices is a specialist private sexual health clinic, which has been providing information, advice and services in Dublin for 20 years. We are proud to be a pro-choice organisation.”

You also neglect to mention in the above comment that Boylan was able to draw on the results of several well respected studies whilst Jameson waffled on about a couple of websites.

This area desperately needs to be regulated and people like this fool stopped and prosecuted without delay and any fuss. I went to the website he mentioned, repeatedly, and looked for the proof he mentioned I don’t have the time to go through all of them right now so picked one at random to check. I chose a 1998 study from Denmark, no. 11 on the list which claimed to be significant and positive.
I can’t help but get the impression that someone googled certain factors to find research papers and decided the conclusions would match what their predetermined outcomes would say they were.
The study questioned women who were never pregnant, who had an early terminated first pregnancy and a natural menopause after age 54.
The study concluded that it “may indicate that a pregnancy decreases the risk of breast cancer by causing a permanent reduction in the pool of estrogen receptor positive cells, thereby rendering the breast less sensitive to the tumour-promoting influence of estrogens.”
It appears to me that these people haven’t a clue what they’re doing and need more ‘Peter Boylan’s directing them, the problem of course is that they don’t want to hear what someone like this has to say, they will hear what they want to hear. As someone wiser than me said, we have to listen to thunder.
So I take it all you folks are happy with the fact that members of the NUJ are obligated to campaign on behalf of the pro choice movement then.

The NUJ is a British trade union to which the NUJ in Ireland is affiliated.

‘Back in 1979 at Portrush The NUJ forced a proposal for Abortion on Demand for Ireland on all its delegates present at that ADM and when several Southern Irish delegates objected, including Brendan Halligan, the then Editor of the Limerick Leader, formerly a journalist on the Kilkenny People, objected to this Abortion on Demand policy they were locked out – out of their own trade union conference!
This led to the mass resignations of Mr. Halligan and of about 70 Irish members of the NUJ, including a couple of journalists in the Radio Centre of RTE in Dublin. The NUJ then threatened the livelihoods of these mostly senior Irish journalists.
A former NUJ member who had resigned the Union over abortion, Billy Quirke of the Wexford People series in Enniscorthy, who was blacked from his job for resigning from the NUJ in objection to their Abortion on Demand policy, took that union to the High Court in Dublin to secure an injunction against the NUJ restraining it from interfering with his livelihood as a journalist.
The Union fought Billy all the way but retreated inside the High Court in Dublin in 1981 , just before Mr. Justice McWilliams was to rule against the union – and thus destroy its closed shop in Ireland under Article 40 of the Irish Constitution.

You have an interesting slant on the manner in which the resolution was taken up. It states very clearly in the link you have provided that the Irish section of the council distanced itself from the resolution. Also, legislation and regulations governing reporting safeguard right of reply and equal weight to each side. As for the idea of an inherant bias, you might be right, but the voices of those opposed liberalization of abortion law in Ireland have hardly been silenced. David Quinn, John Waters, Breda O Brien are all prominent journalists with regular columns whilst many anti-choice campaigners have been provided with significant airtime on the national broadcaster, including the vicious crackpot who is the subject of this article. Any perception of victimization of your side is just that- perception, not reality. Anyway, goodnight, tis late in mainland Europe and you seem to have a lot more time than the rest of us to waste online.

Ireland seriously needs more investigative journalism. Sure if people got paid for giving their opinions, Ireland would be recession-proof! These places can’t all be funded by lone eccentrics with a bee in their bonnet – they have to be making money out of fake counselling somehow. (One such site has a line of books with no prices, only a suggested donation of 40 to 1,000. Another promotes retreat weekends for all. No pricing shown either.) It’s all very dubious, but hard to tell what the ultimate racket is. Why so cautious, you’d wonder, when even taxis must display prices and offer a receipt? It’s anyone’s guess who sponsors these setups, isn’t it?

I hope this isn’t the kiss of death for my little piece of fiction, but am currently working on a play inspired by #TwoWomenTravel part of which includes (at the moment) a debate between a pro-life and pro-choice; when my son read it he accused me of making my pro-lifer a ‘straw man’ (there to support my pro-choice stance). In all honesty, even in his unedited state; my straw man has greater credibility and puts up a better argument than Mr Whatever-his-name-is and his crack-pot cancer scare tactics.

When IFPA counsellors were taped advising women to hide their medical history from their doctors, Duffy, RTE and the NUJ pro aborts ignored that story of “wrong advice and info for women”. We didn’t Brid Smith picketing IFPA offices on behalf of women.

I am on treatment for breast cancer but I haven’t had an abortion..With all the contradictory info and scare mongering at the moment..I think people could possibly look at me and wonder..hmm! Did she or didn’t she???… I wonder are any other breast cancer suffers out there feeling like this at the moment..
Someone very close to me has had had a mastectomy, but never had an abortion. I’m really torn between anger that a whack-job like him can say such hurtful and knowingly untrue things on national radio and delight that his meltdown has revealed the sick, fanatical thinking that anti-choice zealots espouse.
Even a nutter like David Quinn of the Iona “institute” has tweeted that his more extreme kindred spirit has not done their cause any good. Like a stopped clock twice a day, Quinn is right this time; the more is revealed about the malicious and harmful mendacity of those who want to continue denying Irish women the right to bodily autonomy, the sooner the misbegotten Eighth Amendment will be repealed and consigned to the scrap heap of awful mistakes.

What respectable peer reviewed medical studies exist which draw a causal link between abortion and breast cancer? None.
Why would abortion, as distinct fro miscarriage, cause breast cancer but miscarriages will not cause breast cancer. There is no reason, in a scientific sense, that I can see.
Could the 8th Amendment impede or inhibit a pregnant woman receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy whilst pregnant and unable to access abortion in Ireland? Yes.
Would the so called “Pro-Lifers” seek to prevent pregnant women travelling abroad to get an abortion, if they could? Of course they would.
Would so called “pro-lifers” lie and deceive in support of their extreme and absolutist cause? Of course they would.
In reality, do so called “Pro-Lifers” feel more emotional appreciation of a foetus than the welfare of pregnant women? Yes they do.
The “pro-lifers” are a remnant of a hardline, brutal, oppressive and absolutist Roman Catholic Church, blinded by unyeiekding dogma to the trials and tribulations of pregnant women.

It’s astonishing that these so called “Pro-Life” zealots get privileged access to the media and are allowed run counselling clinics. Ireland is a very strange country to allow this.
The 8th Amendement is religious dogma of one religion embedded in our Constitution.
The 8th Amendment is sectarian, it is discriminatory against pregnant women, it promotes inequality, it is harmful and hostile to women and represents a powerful symbol of the unhealthy dominance of Irish society by the institutional RCC and a deference to a foreign State, the Vatican.
Any Irish citizen who reads our constitution in full must agree that the archaic language when it comes to Catholic beliefs is completely inappropriate in a constitution of a modern country – it is an embarrassment.

I think its truly disgraceful that women in a vunerable state, were given clearly biased advice based on certain individuals pesonal views on this issue, What sort of impact did this have on the women who recieved this advice? Why isnt this regulated?? Surely there must be justice for those affected?? The most important decision you would ever have to make, you look for help (hard enough by itself)and youre manipulated…disgusting.
Actually Owen that’s a really good point, where are all of the women that have been through the doors of his little clinic, these poor women are living with the lies spread by the clinic.
