Shannon passengers flying to US no longer have to queue twice for security checks

A new screening system is being trialled to combine European and US pre-clearance systems.

A NEW SECURITY screening system, which could halve the time spent in security, is being trialled at Shannon Airport.

Shannon is the first airport in the world to trial the new pre-clearance checkpoint, which was developed as part of an EU funded project. It will mean passengers flying to the US will no longer have to queue twice for separate security checks.

The new approach combines European and US pre-clearance checkpoints and the airport said this trial will show how a checkpoint can be designed to comply with two different sets of regulations.

This combined checkpoint is the first of its kind in the world and has been designed to improve customer experience.

Niall Maloney airport operations director of Shannon Airport said “passenger security is of paramount importance to us and being able to trial a new system that combines the highest level of security screening together with a customer focused operation is a win-win.

We have literally just started trialling the new checkpoint and already we are getting positive feedback from our airport customers availing of the pre-clearance by the removal of a checkpoint.

The trial will run at Shannon Airport from now for a ten week period.

A good move IMO. Its a pain in Dublin Airport to go through one security check with its own requirements, and then have to go through the US security check with a different set of security requirements. (I’m referring to jackets on/off, laptops out and place in bins, shoes on/off etc. )

For anyone flying to the US be prepared also for an interrogation before you even get to the baggage counter! Heck how am I supposed to remember the name of the officiant of my wedding 7 years ago?? I don’t even remember how old I am! I have to calculate it every time!

You’ll still have to go through pre clearance checks as well as airport security ?

Birmingham International Airport has had these scanners for about a year now. I know, because I’ve used them.
