Tonight is Culture Night - here's what's happening around the country

While some of last year’s most popular venues are returning to the event, there will also be some new venues added to the fun.

TONIGHT MARKS THE 11th annual Culture Night.

The event has become one of the country’s most prominent cultural events and will provide a key opportunity for culture-makers and the public to meet and share their thoughts and work.

For the eleventh year in a row, Culture Night will see towns, villages and cities across the island of Ireland becoming arts and culture hubs – and all for free.

While some of last year’s most popular venues are returning to the event, there will also be some new venues added to the fun.

In Dublin, that includes the museum telling the story of Ireland’s history of emigration, EPIC Ireland and a slew of events on Smithfield Square.

Here’s just some of what’s happening around the country:

Dublin:

In the Docklands, highlights include the Custom House Visitor Centre opening from 5pm-9pm, Windmill Lane Recording Studios hosting talks from 6pm-10pm and Waterways Ireland will host a photographic exhibition on Grand Canal Quay.

Around the Phoenix Park and National Museum, there will be rollerskating tours, bike tours and a special tour of Áras an Uachtaráin.

In Temple Bar, DIT’s Conservatory of Music will perform, Icon Factory will host a walking tour and there will be tours of Smock Alley Theatre and Friends Meeting House.

Around Trinity College, there will be talks with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, tours on the 1916 Freedom Bus and tours of The Little Museum of Dublin and The Pepper Canister Church.

Cork

In Cork city, there will be tours of the Blackrock Castle Observatory, a play performed at Cork City Gaol and Cork’s 96FM will host music and spoken word performances.

Galway

In Galway city, there will be a heritage event in O’Connors’ pub in Salthill, events around Merlin Park University Hospital and live music in Eyre Square.

Limerick

In Limerick, there will be events at the Hunt Museum, bus tours around the city and events in King John’s Castle.

Buses

In Dublin, the bus strike means that free Dublin Buses are cancelled and disruption for people planning to attend some events.

However, Luas and train services will run and the Dublin Archdiocese will allow people park for free in Clonliffe College.

I’m currently in Shanghai. Schools are closed and online learning begins tomorrow. Hearing rumours that sitting in in restaurants is being suspended. There’s a minimal upsurge in apartment buildings being closed and residents being quarantined. All issues are protective. All in all, it’s grand.

Well let’s just hope this isn’t a strong variant & if it dies steady that we have learned and will protect the old and the vulnerable. If you feel any symptoms take a test and if you have covid you isolate.
With so many vaccinated it will bearly even affect people that much hopefully.
So yea hopefully we’ve learned over the last 2 years, no need for restrictions, lockdowns, masks!!!!
Think peoples appetite for all that again won’t be great!

I’m hoping our own current surge, is just the side effect of the lastest lifting of restrictions, and not the new varient that I’ve been reading abiut the last couple of days. (Funny how the Journal has not reported on it when Cork Beo was reporting on what Luke O’Neill said about it yesterday) Regardless, If people can maybe keep their wits about them, keeping in mind the likes of hand hygeine and watch what direction they are coughing in when the could not be arsed covering they’re mouths, or maybe voluntarily put on the mask, we can nip this surge in the bud. None of us want to go back where we were the last couple years.
