IRISH RADIO LEGENDS Dave Fanning and Ian Dempsey are among the four newest members of the PPI Radio Awards Hall of Fame.
The two will be joined by South East Radio’s Eamonn Buttle and Downtown Radio’s Trevor Campbell.
Dempsey has been a key figure in Irish radio for almost three decades and has presented Today FM’s breakfast show since 1998.
Today FM CEO Keith McCormack called Dempsey’s induction a “proud day” for the station.
“Ian represents the very best of what Today FM is as a station. Ian every day wakes up the nation with the same energy and sense of fun that listeners have come to love him for. He is the ultimate broadcasting professional, and has set the bar in Ireland for those to follow for many years.”
Fanning currently hosts a weekend show on 2FM, but has been one of Ireland’s most iconic voices for decades. He has interviewed nearly every major music act of the last 30 years, including David Bowie, Mick Jagger and U2.
Head of RTÉ 2fm, Dan Healy, said:
“Dave Fanning is a pioneer – the great voice of music and popular culture in Ireland. Dave leads and the rest of us follow. I am thrilled for Dave and his family for this well deserved honour.”
Eamonn Buttle is the owner and CEO of South East Radio since 1989 and a founder of Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI). He is its longest serving board member and chairman of IBI. He was instrumental in founding IRS (Independent Radio Sales), Learning Waves and Newstalk 106-108.
Trevor Campbell’s name is synonymous with country music. He has presented country music programming in the north for 40 years.
The group were inducted today at an event at the BAI offices and will be honoured at the PPI awards on 7 October.

Do you not have a chair?
Over the last year or so I’ve been reading articles on the journal.
In that time I’ve noticed the majority of commentators are supporters of the looney left? And may I just say what a bunch of negative moaners the looney left are. Even when something goes their way they will find fault in it. Even when reading this article on “the hall of fame” people who have every right not to listen to Dave fanning will read the article and leave a negative comment.

Love his show in the morning he’s the easy going sort you need to be listening to at that time.
Morning radio is brutal in this country and don’t get me started on that Jennifer Maguire one on 2FM
Ah Alan. Ian is impossible not to like. I don’t say this about many people but there is no badness in Ian Dempsey. Lovely man.. Glad he is getting an award

Well he’s been on breakfast radio along time now, so people must be listening to him. I personally like him, he is easy listening to and doesn’t patronise people like some of the RTÉ crew! Well deserved Iano!

I quite like fanning and he has done a lot for music here. But when U2 put him in their pocket I lost faith in him. It was the one thing I thought he might resist on principle.

Leaving aside for the moment the fact that a regional based hard pressed consultant is reduced to driving SECOND HAND Fararri’s and McLarens, how can a supposedly clever individual hand over a 137k asset to a second hand car dealer on a promise?
And the guy is a doctor.. OK maybe that’s not fair. Some people are honest to the point of believing everyone else is too. For that cash though I wouldn’t trust Bonhams without seeing the motor.

In fairness The Oscars is an example of an industry giving awards to itself, it’s just that the national radio “industry” here could be run from a phone box. …if phone boxes were still actually a thing.

How are these two guys only going on the hall of fame now and that Mario Rosen whatever his name is is already up there? It’s an absolute outrage I tell you!

Fanning is living off the taxpayer (tv licence ). Dempsey is better value for money.
