GARDAÍ HAVE BROUGHT the number of people arrested today to 64 as part of an Operation Thor day of action in the Kilkenny/Carlow Division.

Over 130 gardaí, including 50 student guards, took to the streets of the counties as part of the operation, a multi-strand national anti-crime strategy.

They have arrested a total of 64 people, searched a total of 30 premises, seized €38,000 worth of drugs and cannabis plants, and claimed one firearm, a handgun, in Kilkenny city.

The 64 were arrested in the Kilkenny/Carlow Division – 22 people were arrested and detained under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act, 9 were charged and taken to special court sittings in Carlow and Kilkenny, and 33 were arrested on foot of committal and penal warrants.

60 checkpoints were also carried out across the two counties.

The day of action, gardaí say, was a “high visibility policing operation” whose main focus is to prevent and detect burglaries and thefts committed throughout the region.

The operation focused in particular on intelligence gathering, warrant executions, searches, arrests, crime detection and crime prevention.

Chief Superintendent Dominic Hayes said:

“The objective of the operation is to disrupt criminals living in and travelling through Kilkenny/Carlow Division. Criminals will be deterred from committing crime in an area perceived as being heavily policed.

This operation will also assist in the detection of criminal offences through proactive policing activities.

The Operation was supported by national and regional units including the Regional Support Unit, Regional Surveillance Unit and the Garda Air Support Unit.
