24 hours after the weekend from hell, Donald Trump is in big trouble in the polls

Meanwhile, the most prominent Republican in Congress, Paul Ryan, has said he can no longer continue to defend Trump.

Campaign 2016 Trump Donald Trump Evan Vucci Evan Vucci

IT HAS BEEN a long three days for Donald Trump.

The Republican nominee for American president responded to a scandal involving an 11-year-old video which showed him talking about women in lewd terms by coming out swinging in last night’s presidential debate with Hillary Clinton.

Clearly Trump won’t be going down without a fight. But going down he certainly seems to be if the latest polls are to be believed.

An NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll (conducted in the aftermath of the tape’s release but before the second debate in St Louis) shows Trump trailing by 11 points – 46% to 35% in favour of Clinton.

Real Clear Aggregated polls from end August to date Real Clear Politics Real Clear Politics

Every major poll taken in the last two days shows Clinton with a commanding lead, bar one – that of the LA Times yesterday which shows Trump ahead by three points.

Two separate polls in the aftermath of the debate declared that Clinton had been the winner, although common consensus seems to be that Trump had done enough to at least steady the ship.

He needs more than a steady ship over the next 29 days however.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan, the most powerful Republican in Congress, has reportedly told his colleagues that he can no longer “defend” Trump.

Congress Republicans Paul Ryan Andrew Harnik Andrew Harnik

Ryan says he will no longer campaign with or for the controversial real estate mogul for the remainder of the race, a source told AFP.

“He will spend his entire energy making sure that Hillary Clinton does not get a blank check with a Democrat-controlled Congress,” the source said.

Trump, as is wont, fired back a broadside of his own at Ryan via Twitter.

While the two have never exactly seen eye to eye, Ryan has yet to officially withdraw his endorsement for Trump.

Both Trump and Clinton were back on the campaign trail today, with the billionaire former reality TV star in feisty form in Pennsylvania, doubling down to a rally on his attention to have his rival investigated and imprisoned should he win the race.

America finally goes to the polls on Tuesday 8 November. It’s set to be a brutal month.

Vincent, there’s a difference between dirty talk/saying “naughty” words and then using those words in a sentence fairly indicative of groping and sexual assault. I’d have thought that would have been an obvious difference but apparently… no. Like do you honestly think it’s the words he used that the outrage is over? I think you’ll find it’s the context.

I agree that the media coverage seems one-sided, but then what do you expect when every week Trump says or does something totally asinine? Which in turn ends up distracting from Hillary’s wrongdoings. If the Republicans had an actual serious candidate, rather than this clown, Hillary would be getting slaughtered now and they probably would have walked the election.

The Brexit polls were not badly wrong. Almost all had it as too close to call for many months before the vote. They fluctuated around narrow wins for either side. Those who ignore margins of error and believe only the polls that support their prejudices will of course be baffled when what is predicted actually happens.

The results Sunday also track closely with watchers’ pre-debate preference. Fifty-eight percent of debate watchers said they were supporting Clinton before the debate.”

It’s nothing to do with Trumps personality. If he was winning or close to winning they’d still be there regardless. This is about preserving the GOP itself. They need to hold the house and Senate at all costs. Clinton will load SCOTUS with at least two Democratic judges so that’s already gone. If they don’t hold both houses it’s pretty much over and they honestly might as well go home for at least the next four if not eight years.Gun control, expansion of abortion rights, legislation on climate change etc all get passed without any trouble. In fact it would give Clinton such a free reign I might start siding with the GOP myself once Trump is put to bed. Ideally she needs to be a hamstrung one term president and once gone history need never mention her presidency or this campaign again.

Now is the critical moment where the most damage can be done. There are more tapes out there and as these get released he will spiral ever more out of control as his ego won’t allow him to be handled. I’m not sure he will last the next four weeks.

Considering the circumstances under which he went into the debate it’s surprising that he not only came out alive but actually did quite well. A testament to how terrible Clinton is that she couldn’t capitalise on his troubles. I guess at this point she thinks she just has to show up. But a lot of hardened politicians have learned the hard way not to underestimate him. The debate has been reduced to both candidates telling the voters how bad the other one is and they’re both right.

    @MinnieMoocher01:

i know what ya mean but ironically a tape of him using the N word would only continue to play to his base the same way they wanted him to attack hilairy , threant to jail her and all the other BS theatrics the morans want to hear…it probably would have no real effect at all , he has no real support from the african americans anyway in truth

If the republicans were smart they could still win the election by replacing trump with pence. Die to Clintons untrustworthy past I’m sure pence would beat her by a clear margin. I don’t know why they are letting trump sink their ship and they stand idoly by.

Read the small print on the polls they are sampling 45% democrats to 25% republicans. Sorry folks it’s a landslide for Trump.
