Own a Galaxy Note 7? Samsung will replace it or refund you

The company has said it’s “truly sorry” about safety issues surrounding the smartphone.

SAMSUNG HAS RELEASED a statement with advice for Irish customers who might be worried about safety issues surrounding its Note 7 smartphone.

Production of the phone has been stopped after reports emerged of it catching on fire. Users have been advised to turn the devices off.

In a statement released today, Samsung said: “Customer safety is our top priority – following recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7, we have taken the decision to stop all sales and exchanges of both original and replacement Galaxy Note 7 devices. Consequently, we have permanently discontinued production of the device.

“We advise all existing Note 7 customers to stop using your device, back-up your data and switch it off.”

The company said it is working on a refund or replacement scheme that will allow customers to exchange their Note 7 for a Galaxy S7 or S7 edge.

When you exchange your device you will be refunded the difference in price. Alternatively you can obtain a full refund.

Further details on the exchange programme will be posted on Samsung’s website in due course.

“To all of our Galaxy Note 7 customers, we are truly sorry that we have not met the high standard that you expect from Samsung. We thank you for your patience during this time, and apologise for the inconvenience we have caused.

“We would like to reassure you and all our Samsung customers that the Galaxy Note 7 is the only device affected,” the statement continued.

Any Irish customers who have questions about the issue have been asked to call 01 6950367 from Monday to Saturday from 9am-6pm or on Sundays from 10am-6pm.

I’d personally find the swift alert and response for replacements to be reassuring. Many companies would have to be taken to court before they’d do something like this.

And Zafira owners. Would it not make sense though to have dealers text this warning out to buyers? There was a man in Florida recently who hadn’t heard the recall notices. He left his Note 7 charging in his jeep, and it went up in flames with the phone.

@Ben Gunn: Just makes it true that the Next Samsung Note (if they reuse the brand name) will be the safest phone ever constructed after this debacle

If this were happening to an Apple device, people would be taking a very different stance on it. Cook would be lynched and dragged through the streets. Double standards.

considering the rare minerals that were mined at huge environmental and social cost to produce these phones that aren’t even being used.

they should not be allowed to design phones with batteries that can’t be removed.

Interesting comment. A lot of people have lamented the fact that batteries are no longer removable. How much would it have saved Samsung if in this case they were in fact removable?

True. It could be the charging circuitry in the phone as well. It will be interesting to find out if they ever release the root cause.

If you have one keep it! This is already a collector’s item and will be worth far more than you paid for it in a few year’s time, possibly a few grand! Just don’t use it.

    @Éanna McClean:

happy to hear you have had a good experience – that hasnt been the case in many other countries where they engaged a 3rd party company that ‘does recalls’ and the faffing around between customers , the 3rd party and .samsung left a lot to be desired – i know the PR machine makes it look good but theres a lot of unhappy customers – especially the ones that already went thru a bunch of faffing to get replacements only to be told that they are also risky and they need to go through the same faffing all over again – nice timing that Google just released a viable alternative and Apple recently update iphone too so timing for samsung is shitty – they NEED to get shit together for their loyal customers

I’m sorry, but Samsung is sorry the Note 7 “has not met the high standards you expect”?

    High standards?

Expecting a new phone or any other modern portable electronic gadget to not EXPLODE or CATCH FIRE in your pocket is hardly a high standard.

A basic, minimum standard, I would say!
