LATEST Central Statistic Office (CSO) figures have revealed how the nation’s birth rate has stalled while fewer people are dying.
The new data showed how there were 67,295 children born in Ireland during 2014, down 1,659 from 2013.
The CSO said this is the lowest number of births since 2006 when there were 65,425 births.
The birth rate was 14.6 per 1,000 of the population in 2014 compared to 15.0 in 2013 and 15.3 in 2004.
It also emerged that teen pregnancies are down over 50% compared to 10 years ago while births to mothers over 40 surged by over 70%.
The figures showed just 1,296 births were registered to women under the age of 20 in 2014.
The figure stood at 2,493 in 2004.
In fact, it emerged the average age of mothers is rising with the typical new Irish mothers now aged 30.5 years old compared to 28.5 years old 12 years ago.
Death rates
The “Vital Statistics Annual Report 2014″ by the CSO also revealed that circulatory and respiratory conditions are still some of the biggest killers on the island.
Heart problems accounted for 8,852 deaths while respiratory illness killed 3,492 in 2014.
The CSO said there were 29,252 deaths in Ireland in 2014, of which 14,897 were men and 14,355 were women.
The death rate for 2014 stood at 6.3 deaths per 1,000 total population, slightly lower than the 6.4 recorded in 2013.

@Michael Collins: Officially 459 suicides in 2014, unofficially many multiples of that figure as suicide can be disguised or not recorded in many circumstances but the heartbreak is the same.

Notice as the country recovers from the financial crash the birth rate begins to drop. The ingredients in Ireland that most contributed to the crash are back. Houses out of the reach of couples wanting to purchase; women and men working harder and longer in order to “live” and maintain a lifestyle; the affordability of having and raising an extra child; the rat race to manage time. The regathering of the elements of the perfect storm. The emasculation of the poor and the middle by the rich and the wealthy. The desperation of trying to stave off the arrival of the straw that breaks the camels back. The brute Bruton telling opt-outers from substitution and supervision that their salary will be deducted for not becoming opt-inners just another straw in the State oppression of its own employees -— see what’s happening with the people we most depend on the Gardaí, the Nurses and the Teachers. Observe the wealthy how they treat the workers for example zero hour employment contracts. Is it any wonder the country will eventually face a birth rate crisis which will have a knock on effect on the pensioner rate crisis. People will be little more than indentured slaves owned by their employers and the State. Indeed all are equal but some are more equal than others.

It’s time that the CSO released the full census results instead of drip feeding us with statistics. How can they talk about the state of the nation when we don’t even know if the population of our towns and villages up or down on the previous 2011 census results.

I wonder about how many people die while waiting on a operation ? People waiting years for health treatment H.S.E over staffed at the top and underfunded in beds, nurses and doctors .
