Shannen Doherty accepts award for 'every single cancer patient out there'

SHANNEN DOHERTY WAS honoured over the weekend for her efforts to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of early detection.

The actor (45) received a Courage Award at the American Cancer Society’s inaugural Giants of Science Gala in LA on Saturday.

Her friend and fellow actor Sarah Michelle Gellar presented her with the award.

Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Earlier this year, she confirmed the disease had spread to her lymph nodes.

The former Charmed and Beverly Hills 90210 actor told ET Online: “I don’t view it as me accepting the Courage Award for myself. I’m accepting the Courage Award on behalf of every single cancer patient out there because it takes a lot of courage.”

For the last year-and-a-half, cancer has been my teacher. It’s taught me what love, strength, friendship and support truly looks like.

“It’s opened my eyes to myself and it’s allowed me to not only share my journey with people but it’s actually allowed me to share my inner self with anybody who actually wanted to know what it was like … And the end result is that I am nothing but vulnerability and, to me, vulnerability is courage.”

Doherty also expressed her support for Michael Bublé, who recently announced that his three-year-old son has cancer. Doherty said such a diagnosis must be devastating for any parent.

Both my mam and girlfriend have been battling cancer over the past few years, and they beat it thank goodness. Early detection is everything.

@Paul Kealy: Fair play to you Paul, get the word out that a simple blood test with your GP is a good place to start. Swollen lymphnode glands are a clear indication that something is wrong.

Hi Chris. Totally agree with regards blood tests and being aware of any changes etc. It’s so important to know our bodies, if something doesn’t feel right go with your instinct and just get it checked out. Life is too precious not to.

If they tell you that you have cancer but it’s treatable take the treatment

Something very frightening is happening to many cancer patients, a well earned distrust of the establishment by gen X and millennials is bleeding over into medicine , and they’re believing quacks online who say that things like Gerson Therapy, coffee enemas and juices can cure cancer so don’t go for what they call the “cut poison burn” approach. DONT. BUY. IT
Healthy food reduces your odds of getting cancer it does t cute it
If it’s not studied, scientifically proven peer reviewed treatment that can be replicated it’s not medicine. Trust your oncologist not the celebrity with a juice franchise

@Ryan Carroll: Ryan you are aware that Peer reviewed studies show that mammograms increase your chances of breast cancer by 2% for each and every time you have one, so by the method they use alone to test, if you have a mammogram each and every year as you are expected to for ten years between your 40s and 50s that by your tenth mammogram you’ve increased your chances of breast cancer by 20% alone.

That’s a scientific proven fact. Then add to it that there are safer and better ways of checking for cancerous cells…ie Thermographs and actual ultrasounds that are completely non invasive and don’t carry the threat of actually causing you the chance of getting cancer. So oncologists don’t always carry out the best forms of treatment as they are part of a system that has been in place for well over a hundred years.

Ps you shouldn’t be advising anyone against anything unless you have any scientific backgrounds yourself or have studies to prove something doesn’t work. We should be looking at inclusion rather than exclusion. People believe that only western medicine systems work when there are thousands of people who have beaten cancer using different methods. People shouldn’t just believe there is only one way. Because there isn’t.

Ps The fact you admit that healthy foods reduces your chances of getting cancer how in hell do you not think it does nothing in terms of fighting it once you get it. That just makes absolutely no sense at all.

Cancer needs to battled on all fronts…not from a position of exclusion.

This is the EXACT kind of wonton ignorance I’m taking about. Oh if only the quacks adhered to the standard that if you’re not a PhD or md you don’t get a comment

Science doesn’t work the you suggest, we don’t prove things don’t work, we prove they do, in the absence of that proof we safely assume they don’t
Your logic on food is fatally flawed as well, seat belts help you avoid injury in car crashes who’s to say they don’t help you treat the injuries after…because we know how biology works

Cancer is (simplified) replicated mutated cells, we know medicines fight them cos it’s been studied, we know other things don’t for the same reason. How the hell would coffee enemas help colon cancer?
I knew a woman who tried it your way her breast cancer went from a highly treatable easily cured (despite that being a word oncologists hate) pea sized tumour to a stinking orange size thing coming through her breast and spear into her bones bumps all under her arms, that’s what happens when you place trust in this voodoo medicine

@Ryan Carroll: Well Ryan I could go back into the history of medicine and how Rockefeller and Carnegie corrupted the system to sell their medicine and that is how medicine is now thought but I won’t bore you with the details. It’s as rigged as an American election.

But you chose to ignore the scientific facts I advised and chose to go off on your own little rant using the term quacks, I’m surprised you didn’t incorporate tin foil hats and the term conspiracy theory while you were at it.

What do you know about coffee enemas before you start discounting them. I haven’t studied them but I know manys a cancer patient who has nothing but good things to say about them. But you know better, so people should take Ryan Carroll’s advise. He’s the voice of knowledge on this subject. Oncologists I’m sure conference call you on a regular basis with queries.

I could also mention a Dr Burzynski in Texas who is curing terminal cancer patients regularly with what you would call voodoo medicine because it’s not what the system teaches who has to defend his methods in court on regular basis because he doesn’t do it by the book.

Then you have a medical treatment facility in Tijuana in Mexico that was forced to leave the states because again they treated cancer differently to the Western medical way….they have a recorded cure rate of 85%. People should ignore that according to you. That’s all rubbish yeah.

There are many ways of treating cancer. Not just one. The reason the rate is now at a rate of 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women is unfortunately because people choose to do what you state and go by literally what a doctor says. A doctor has been trained in one way and one way only. If they can’t treat you go look for different methods. Don’t give up hope. Because you know what…once you give hope you will die….it’s that simple. And that’s the message you are sending. Accept death. Don’t seek out hope.

There are as many corrupt doctors as there is quacks as you call them with doctors now being found to diagnose people with cancer that actually never had it in the first place. Ps Chemo was discovered by World war vistims found with their lymphs cleared by a mustard gas…so what was designed to kill them actually cleared their lymphs. Which is why chemo is only really good at clearing lymphatic cancers and nothing else…..and hence why we are not winning the war on the cancer and never will while we continue down the path of cure is better than prevention when it never is. This is why nutrition has never been included in college course options…because Carnegie and Rockefeller insured it wasn’t and that’s the reason nutritionists are deemed to be quacks and why you shouldn’t trust them !!! It ruins profit !!!

@3monkey: 3monkey, wishing you all the best and that whatever method you choose works for you. Keeping a strong mental belief is key and that is why the placebo effect works so well with other sicknesses. That’s why so many people with cancer die when a doctor gives them the dreaded six months but yet there are many cases of others still here years and years later….!!! Because unfortunately doctors don’t know it all….as Ryan seems to think otherwise those people given the terminal diagnosis wouldn’t be here…but many are !!! Best of luck and don’t give up.

@3monkey: I love a laugh as much as the next man but seriously come on? I have to agree with Ryan here, these things have been claimed and investigated up the wazoo (pardon the pun) and with very few exceptions have been proven to be utter rubbish.
The simple truth of the matter is that on the very few occassions that herbal remedies or the like are found to be beneficial they are refined, the exact compound isolated and it’s dosage manufactured in a controlled environenment. This ensures that everyone around the world can be confident of getting exactly the same dosage of exactly the right drug that works for their particular ailment, instead of chewing on a stick or smoking a leaf and hoping to hit lucky. When this happens the herbal remedies become part of the medical world – and some people stop believing in them.
I say this as someone who has both parents suffer from different forms of cancer, and right now, as I type this I do so from hospital. Drink your coffee, don’t shove it up your ass.
