Temple Bar restaurant among nine food businesses hit with closure orders

In another case, three prosecutions were secured against the owners of Jackson’s Hotel in Donegal.

THE FOOD SAFETY Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has reported that nine businesses were served with closure orders during October.

Four closures were ordered under the FSAI Act of 1998 and five under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations Act 2010.

In another case, the HSE secured three prosecutions against the owners of Jackson’s Hotel in Ballybofey, Donegal.

Mayo County Council also served a prohibition order against Paul Howley, a wholesaler/distributor from Ross, Castlebar, Mayo.

The food businesses which were served closure orders were:

  • Sunnybank Hotel (Closed area: Public bar only), 68 – 70 Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
  • Millars Restaurant (adjoining pub remains open), Ballydangan, Athlone, Roscommon
  • Shan (restaurant/café), 6 Crow Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
  • K&C Norton Wholesale Foods Limited, Unit 5C, Ballymount Road Lower, Ballymount Trading Estate, Ballymount, Dublin 1
  • Dynasty Chinese Restaurant & Take Away, Unit 9, Ballymun Town Centre, Main Street, Ballymun, Dublin 11
  • 7 Star Pizza (take-away), (Closed area: potato peeling and chip production room on first floor), 68 Main Street, Mallow, Cork
  • Midnight Express (take-away), Main Street, Mullagh, Cavan
  • Bella House (restaurant/café), Castle Street, Kells, Meath
  • CoCo Asian & Chinese Takeaway, Main Street, Ballingarry, Limerick

Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI stressed the importance of food safety management systems to ensure full compliance with legislation.

“Food safety is of crucial importance for public health and there can be no excuses from non-compliant food businesses.

“The serving of ten enforcement orders shows the importance of having a robust food inspection system to check that food businesses are complying with the food safety laws.”

There are loads of fast food chippers who handle money from customers while prepping/cooking food without using disposable gloves.

Mobile fast food chippers really concern me regarding their sanitary arrangements. Suffice it to say that a fair percentage of their customers must have consumed a bit more than they thought from time to time.

Businesses that are closed by the FSAI should be obliged to say why they are shut on their premises. Also, all businesses covered by the FSAI should be rated from 0-5 Stars and be obliged to show this rating on their website and/or premises. This way the public will know what to expect.

As sad as it is to see a local institution like Jackson’s Hotel in a difficult position I’m reminded of this real-life (and not a scene from Fawlty Towers) review of the place on TripAdvisor. Surprised the place is earning enough to pay the fines with reviews like this…

‘I noticed what appeared to be a spot of faeces on the bottom of the bath panel beside the toilet and informed hotel staff. The owner of the hotel came up to inspect the mark and scraped it off with her nail and informed me it was chocolate’

    @Niall McCauley:

Yet the reviewer still gave it a 3-star rating despite claiming there was basically S-H-one-tee on the shower curtain. Makes you wonder what would classify as a 1-star review in her book…

Oh we believed it.. but I wonder, they were good at making up stories about anything ” different”
