'Talking is always better than walking': Relief this morning as teachers to attend pay talks

The agreement to suspend the action has been welcomed by the government and education bodies.

EVERY SECONDARY SCHOOL across the country is open today as the ASTI prepares to sit down with the Government and thrash out a deal over teacher pay.

The action taken by thousands of teachers concerns equal pay for those who began post-2011 and pre-2012, and who do not get the same pay as their other colleagues.

Actions planned by the teacher union revolved around pay for supervision and substitution duties.

Currently, teachers who are members of the ASTI do not get paid for supervision of lunch breaks or substitution duties.

The General Secretary of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), Michael Moriarty, this morning welcomed the decision by the ASTI to suspend their industrial action.

He said: “We are relieved that the union has agreed to defer the directive to its members not to engage in supervision and supervision duties, which will permit all schools to open fully from today.

It is a relief that school life for students, which should always be our first consideration, can return to normal.

“Talking is always better than walking, and we exhort both sides to take this as a serious opportunity to find an acceptable compromise to ensure that the school year remains uninterrupted.”

The Department of Education last night released a statement welcoming the announcement.

It read: “The Department confirms that it has received an invitation from Anna Perry, chair of the Teachers Conciliation Council (TCC) and director of conciliation services, Workplace Relations Commission, to meet with her tomorrow to discuss matters of mutual concern relating to the ASTI’s industrial action that fall within the remit of the TCC.”

I can’t say that Renua has excited me yet, but I will keep an open mind. As for Mr Irwin being grumpy perhaps this country makes him grumpy and he needs something to make him excited in old age.

I’m trying to contact Eric Cantona. He might be able to understand what was meant by the” malaria drug ” bit.

If he’s not a politician and just a grumpy old man why is he a declared candidate ? Renua is just another PDs or Fine Gael. A change in irish politics is not going to come from another right wing neo-liberal party.

What they have already put out on the table is very exciting.”

But what exactly have they put on the table? I can’t see anything. The table is bare. I’d actually have much more respect for them if they came out with all guns blazing and really strong positions on stuff, even if I disagreed with them. But as it stands they just look wishy-washy

Yeah but where’s the fire Pontius? They may have great ideas but they seem ashamed of expressing them. Grey and insipid is how they seem to this ordinary punter. They need to sex it up and fast.

“Renua: No pay increase for doctors, nurses and therapists this side of 2021.”

That will do lots to increase the moral of nurses trying to deal with overcrowded A&Es, or encourage Irish doctors to stay. Won’t do anything to help sick children if we don’t have the professionals to care for them.

Populist right wing nonsense from Renua and Eddie Hobbs.

No pay increase for public services along with threats that some might be fired.

There’s 300,000 votes (not counting the spouses/siblings/families of public servants) right there.

I’m going to predict that they have NO seats in fifteen months time.

So do you propose leaving under performing public management workers in their overpaid positions?

I agree that a six year wage freeze doesn’t really work for political party or voter but threatening to fire an under performing manager is definitely needed! Think of how efficient our health service could be!

So, we know that Lucinda will personally vote in favour of same sex marriage but what is the official stance of the party on this issue?

We accept that it allows freedom of conscience and will not apply a whip but surely the Party has a policy view on this issue?

Let’s start with that simple question of transparency and openness.
