Protesters light fires in streets and block traffic in response to Trump's shock election

Rallies were organised to express shock and anger over the businessman’s election.

Updated at 10am

PROTESTERS BURNED A giant orange-haired head of Donald Trump in effigy, lit fires in the streets and blocked traffic lanes  as rage over the billionaire’s election victory spilled onto the streets of US cities.

From New York to Los Angeles, thousands of people in around ten cities rallied against the president-elect a day after his stunning win, some carrying signs declaiming “Not our President” and “Love trumps hate.”

Most of the rallies were peaceful.

Outside Trump’s residence in Trump Tower on New York’s upscale Fifth Avenue, protesters gathered with signs reading “Dump Trump”.

Police said they had arrested 15 people there, the New York Times reported.

Protesters playing a game of cat and mouse with police blocked a major highway near downtown Los Angeles in a demonstration that continued into the small hours of this morning, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Demonstrators outside City Hall there also hoisted a giant, box-shaped likeness of Trump’s head, topped with bright orange hair, into the street, and set it ablaze.

In Washington, several hundred gathered in front of the White House for a candlelight vigil to decry what they called Trump’s racism, sexism and xenophobia, carrying signs reading “We have a voice!” and “Education for all!”

“People are justly frightened,” said one of its organisers, Ben Wikler, director of the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org.

“We are here because in these darkest moments, we are not alone,” he told the crowd, before leading chants of “We are not alone!”

Protests were also held in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Portland and other cities.

In Oakland, California, some 7,000 people by police estimates lit fires in the street and stood around them chanting.

Some threw bottles and firecrackers at police, and several officers were injured, police spokeswoman Johnna Watson told CNN.

She said two police cars also were burned.

Ethan Miller of the workers’ rights group Jobs with Justice said the Washington vigil was meant to show that civil society was resilient.

“It’s a hard time for a lot of Americans,” he told AFP.

“We saw a campaign that was filled with racism and misogyny and whole host of other terrible tactics that ultimately were successful for winning the electoral college.”

But we’re not going to let a Donald Trump presidency stop the progress in this country.

Electoral system ‘broken’

In New York, demonstrators holding signs saying “Love Trumps Hate” and “Trump Grabbed America by the Pussy!” marched uptown from Union Square to chant in front of Trump Tower.

“The electoral college is broken,” protester Nicholas Forker said of the US indirect voting system.

I think it definitely needs to be reformed…

In Chicago, several thousand people gathered around another Trump Tower, blocking downtown traffic. A counter-protest gathered on the other side of the building.

Across the country, high school and college students also staged campus demonstrations and walkouts from classes.

In Oregon, demonstrators blocked traffic in downtown Portland, forcing a delay on two light-rail lines.

The crowd there grew to about 300 people, local reports said, including some who sat in the middle of a road to block traffic. Others burned US flags.

In Pennsylvania, hundreds of University of Pittsburgh students marched through the streets.

The rallies followed protests overnight on Tuesday as voting results were being tallied, when at least one person was seriously injured in Oakland, California, where demonstrators broke store windows and set rubbish alight.

@Jim O Brien – TechBuzz Ireland: yes, using our data to protect the country. I have lived in EU countries where an ID card is mandatory. They don’t have a problem with controlling illegal immigrants getting access to the public services. Guess what the illegal immigrants do….they go to Ireland and the UK where there is no ID scheme and where it is not obligatory to register as a resident.

This PSC was brought in to stop SW fraud, or so we were told. Yet most of the “fraud” is related to over payment made to people by the dept. What the government has done is to assume that all those on SW payments are criminals intending to defraud the system. In trying to roll it out by stealth across all public services the same assumption applies. The state, Ireland, under this minority FG government, has assumed the citizens of Ireland are criminals and the state must protect itself from the criminals who avail of state public services.
The dept itself, the minister responsible, the government, refuse to abide by the law on data gathering, compilation of data, holding of data on 3.2 million citizens of Ireland. FG and public service officials also refuse to attend at committees to answer questions on this card. They don’t want to account for the illegality they have engaged in.
This PSC was an attempt to bring in a Biometric National ID Card without any due process and force it on people by taking punitive action against anyone that refused to comply.

I don’t thing people here get what the problem is with the card. There is no legal legislation for a national id card in Ireland. You legally don’t have to get the card for anything other than dept of social welfare. But other govt departments were forcing people to get them and refusing to accept driving licence or passports.

When you went to get the new card they wanted to see your drivers license to prove who you were even though you are there in the first place because other Gov departments refuse to accept driving licenses or passports.

Again there is no legislation in Ireland for a national I’d. This is an attempt to introduce one by stealth. This is so dumb because the PSC doesn’t have your date of birth on it so you can’t even use it as a form of I’d.

I can attest to the fact that it was much easier to renew a drivers license with a PSC. Surprisingly so! The reason I got one was because my daughter needed one when applying for her theory test so I decides to jump on the bandwagon. So far so good…unless of course they sell my data LOL I would not be fond of that

@Josh Hanners: Gazza is right. In those countries having one is in the law. That isn’t the case here. If the blueshirts want us to have an ID card and to obediently comply with their dictates, they need to do it lawfully and up front. Not by sneaking it in like this.
If we let this slide we might as well just say goodbye altogether to democracy, civil rights and the legitimacy of the law itself. Just because FFG don’t seem to respect any of those things doesn’t mean we citizens have to start thinking they aren’t important.

The Data Protection Act and amendments probably came from an EU Directive for the Irish Government to introduce legislation to protect private data. Regardless of what the Social Welfare Act said previously, the data protection legislation was intended to apply to all business/institutions and government departments. Why can’t the Thicko’s understand this?
