Crackdown on outstanding warrants results in 50 arrests

Many repeat offenders were placed in prison following the operation.

AN OPERATION TARGETING outstanding warrants was executed last week resulting in the arrest of 50 people.

Gardai said a “day of action” was carried out in five garda divisions of Meath, Westmeath, Wicklow, Laois/Offaly and Kildare.

The operation was coordinated by the eastern region and other specialist units based in the area.

A garda spokesman said: “In total, 50 individuals were arrested. A total of 61 bench warrants, one committal warrant and 108 penal warrants were executed. The operation resulted in a significant number of repeat offenders being lodged in prison on foot of penal and committal warrants or brought before the courts in custody.

“This is the third operation targeting warrants in the region since August 2016. To date, 504 warrants have been executed and 160 persons arrested during these operations.”

    Why is this a news event? Shouldn’t this be a daily task for the gardai?

    Is this not part of their day to day job they should be doing anyway, it is the Gardai that let the amount on the list stack up in the first place.

    @Gerry McCarthy:

    So who prioritises the work they have resources for and who makes the decision not to execute warrants as opposed to other work?

    Given that our judges refuse to give out custodial sentences yet every prison in the country is overflowing it indicates to me that they have got the finger out!

    Local Superintendents allocate their resources however due to the recruitment freeze most resources are required on regular units to carry out day to day policing duties. My local station has 1 warrants Guard.

    There is some sick people out there in every walk of life. No doubt there are corrupt Gardai as I have experienced myself but I don’t tar them all with the one brush. Plenty of good Gardai out there too. If this Garda is found guilty he should face severe penalties and none of this suspended sentences crap.

    @Gerry McCarthy: I agree Gerry…I too have experienced a few corrupt Gardai, but having experienced police services in other countries, An Garda Síochána as a whole, is one of the World’s best.

    @Nick Allen; There is probably a warrant officer in every District Station. He/ She might call on several occasions and find nobody home. Some will probably give a bit of leeway to people, a short period in which to find money, some warrants can be quite large. Some people will try and avoid detection, some may be away working in different counties or maybe England. That is how warrants build up. You see, if Gardai just grabbed a lad at first instant there would be complaints as well.

    It must be a regular occurrence that the Gardai in the Midlands don’t bother doing their job. They somehow “forgot” to serve Robert Troy, FF TD, his three summonses in 2013. Somehow if it was a TD from a certain other party or an independent TD was involved I guarantee the summonses would have been served in time. http://m.independent.ie/irish-news/pressure-on-gardai-to-explain-failure-to-serve-summonses-on-td-29253187.html

    The problem is when these people are put in prison they will be out before the end of the day.That means the all the outstanding warrants are cleared. I presume the majority of the warrants relate to fines not being paid. The system is laughable to say the least.how much does it cost the taxpayer to have them in the nick each day? Go to the source of their weekly income,job,dole,and take it from them there.Otherwise this just goes on and on.And it’s Always the Taxpayer who really suffers.
