Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have reached a deal on rents

Without Fianna Fáil, the government would not be in a position to pass the legislation.

FINE GAEL AND Fianna Fáil have reached a deal on the government’s rent plan.

On Tuesday, Housing Minister Simon Coveney announced the government’s plan to tackle spiraling rent costs.

While much of the plan was met with approval from Fianna Fáil, their spokesperson Barry Cowen said that two areas in particular are being opposed.

These were the limiting of “rent pressure zones” to Dublin and Cork and a plan to cap rent increases in the designated zones to 4% per year over a three-year period.

The impasse led to the government trying to withdraw its own bill from the Dáil today.

Without Fianna Fáil, the government would not be in a position to pass the legislation.

In the last hour, however, a deal between the parties has been reached.

In a statement, Cowen said:

“Following an intensive negotiation process, Fianna Fáil has achieved significant progress on ten out of these twelve proposals.

We have not achieved everything we sought, but as a result of Fianna Fáil intervention, there will now be an immediate examination of the market conditions in Limerick city, Galway city, Waterford city, areas contiguous to Cork city and the commuter belt surrounding Dublin in counties Louth, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow.

“It is expected that most, if not all, of these areas will be included within the scheme”

“Convincing Fine Gael to accept rent control in areas of high pressure is a major achievement.”

Cowen criticised Coveney for “failing to consult in any meaningful way” with Fianna Fáil.

I dont think so. I work on the wholesale side suppling retail. 2012 has been the worst year yet. One customer a week going into liquidation now. I dont know were they get these figures from. I never seen anything like this before.

I agree, I work in retail and our figures are getting worse by the month and we’d be regarded as one of the larger, safer companies. And they certainly don’t correspond with the feedback from customers. I do wonder how they come up with these sentiment figures.

Same as, Jan was ok but Feb and March is like someone just switched the lights off and this month is shaping up the same. Im on the road covering most of the country since 04 and this is the lowest ive ever seen things. Now your afraid to sell to much because you wont get paid. Im not one for promoting doom and gloom but its really at a critical point now.

3 years ago…I was getting pay and going like crazy, almost twice per week, to buy the last trend…Right now I just buy clothes sometimes, most of the time on sales and *try* to save as much as I can ( 4 increase of salaries, however my salary is lower than it was 3 years ago…Happy Days…:)))))))))

I hate to say it but ….. The government are not to be believed . You keep saying that they are doing their best …. Yet you are seeing it with your very own eyes ! It is very upsetting when the dawn of realisation begins to break , but you are not alone . On top of the 1.5 billion euro handed over to AIB’s unsecured bond holders too . It is a right kick in the teeth .

The dawn of realisation begins to break? I do hope your not refering to me susie. My realisation broke a long time ago. I represent 17 international companies interests in Ireland, one of which turned over a billion globally last year so i do know a small bit about sales. The govt are not doing a good job or a bad job. Their doing what they are told. Its as simple as that. The rest of us just have to make the best of whats left behind monetary wise.

In fairness I bought an extra packet of taytos last month. Maybe that was the cause the uplift?

Wishful thinking on the part of the ERSI & KBC I think. Repeat after me ‘things are getting better’ and they will…..

On the shop/retail unit front, if you look at it coldly, How can so many survive ?
In the local town (approx 30,000) In the last few years of the boom, 2 big shopping centres + 2 big retail parks + tesco extra + others opened. Even without the colapse, How can so many new shops/units survive alongside existing ones ?
