Thousands trapped as Aleppo evacuation suspended

An evacuation was abruptly suspended this morning.

THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT has suspended the evacuation of civilians and fighters from the last rebel-held parts of Aleppo, leaving thousands of people trapped and uncertain of their fate.

Appeals came in from around the world for the evacuations to resume, with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warning that Aleppo had become “a synonym for hell”.

The United Nations urges “the parties to take all necessary measures to allow safe resumption of this evacuation process”, he said in New York.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also called for all sides to respect the Aleppo deal.

Rebel backer Ankara, which helped broker the accord with regime ally Moscow, said thousands of people were still waiting to leave.

Turkey and a Syrian military source said the evacuation had been suspended but was not yet over, while Moscow insisted the operation was now “complete”, with all women and children moved from the city.

Amid the confusion, a convoy of evacuees that had already left the east when the operation was suspended was forced to turn back, an AFP correspondent said.

The delicate operation to bring the last civilians and rebels out of east Aleppo began yesterday and continued overnight, with thousands of people leaving in buses and ambulances.

But this morning it was abruptly suspended, with the government accusing rebels of violating the terms of the accord.

“The evacuation operation has been suspended because the militants failed to respect the conditions of the agreement,” a security source told AFP.

State television said rebels had tried to smuggle heavy weapons and hostage out of Aleppo.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, which has supervised the evacuation, confirmed it was on hold.

Besieged villages

The opposition accused the government of suspending the operation in a bid to secure the evacuation of residents from Fuaa and Kafraya, two villages under rebel siege in northwest Syria.

The government and its other main ally Iran have reportedly sought to add an evacuation of civilians from the villages to the terms of the Aleppo deal.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, also said the suspension appeared to be related to the two villages.

It said pro-government fighters had blocked the road out of Aleppo that the evacuation convoy had been using and rebels were refusing the evacuation of residents of Fuaa and Kafraya.

Let’s just all be thankful that the evil terrorists funded and tooled up by the west have been defeated in Aleppo by Assad with the help of the good men from Russia.

    @Charlie Wrex:

For starters, there are (NO) reliable figures, what numbers do exist are significantly obfuscated by vested interests on all sides. However, if the war complex had not funded, armed, trained and supplied the war against Syria, we would not have so much death and destruction.

@Charlie Wrex: Here’s how the US, Israel, al-Qaeda and ISIS work together in Syria
    Afra’a Dagher
Simultaneous US and Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military positions in the eastern city of Deir-ez-Zour and in Al-Quneitra show how the US and Israel manipulate ISIS and Al-Qaeda to wage their war of aggression against Syria.
The Syrian battlefield is now witnessing an escalation of the war. This is despite the fact that it is supposed to be a time of cessation of hostilities brokered by the US and Russia.
The Syrian war has two major fronts. The first and most important is in southern Syria, on the borderline with Israel and the occupied territories of the Syrian Golan Heights. This area is divided into two areas: the liberated area of Al-Quneitra, and the occupied area of the Golan Heights where Jabhat Al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda’s base their fighters.

This article is about the conflict in Syria which is part of the wider ME conflict, of which the Mosul siege is one of the main current events. Have you proof that civilians are deliberately targeted, or hospitals that aren’t used by terrorists are being deliberately targeted? Civilians dying in airstrikes or hospitals getting hit are not proof of being deliberately targeted. If terrorists are using medical facilities or civilian areas for military purposes then they will be hit, as the US have hit hospitals in Mosul and smashed one to bits in Afghanistan in the last year. The Yanks will tell you these strikes were targeting terrorists, and the Russians and SAA use the same line. Obviously the SAA are more reckless in their airstrikes the latter two and I don’t think anyone would deny that. In urban warfare civilian casualties are inevitable.

Palestine is still the issue https://vimeo.com/17401477

John Pilger first made the film ‘Palestine Is Still The Issue’ in 1977. It told how almost a million Palestinians had been forced off their land in 1948, and again in 1967. Twenty five years later, John Pilger returned to the West Bank of Jordan and Gaza, and to Israel, to ask why the Palestinians, whose right of return was affirmed by the United Nations more than half a century ago, are still caught in a terrible limbo – refugees in their own land, controlled by Israel in the longest military occupation in modern times.

“If we are to speak of the great injustice here, nothing has changed,” says Pilger at the start of the film, “What has changed is that the Palestinians have fought back. Stateless and humiliated for so long, they have risen up against Israel’s huge military regime, although they themselves have no army, no tanks, no American planes and gunships or missiles. Some have committed desperate acts of terror, like suicide bombing. But, for Palestinians, the overriding, routine terror, day after day, has been the ruthless control of almost every aspect of their lives, as if they live in an open prison. This film is about the Palestinians and a group of courageous Israelis united in the oldest human struggle, to be free.”

I’m guessing history is not one of your strong points Guybrush, . — Jews have a history in Judea and Samaria dating back from time immemorial. For instance, Shechem, otherwise known as Nablus, has Jewish history dating back to Abraham. Shechem was the first place that Abraham set foot in when he arrived in Israel. — As for Arabs, before the unfortunate spread of Islam the term ‘Arab’ referred to the Nomadic people of the northern and central ‘Arabian’ (clue) peninsula. — A little education will go a long way.

@Clever Jake: The UK and US are not innocent when it comes to Syria. The Syrian Government blocked a deal with Qatar allowing pipelines for the transport of gas through its territory to the Mediterranean and decided on a deal with Iran instead. The US and UK , with support from Saudi Arabia and Quarter decided to topple the Syrian Government.
In an interview with the French TV station LCP, former French minister for Foreign Affairs Roland Dumas said:
‘’ I’m going to tell you something. I was in England two years before the violence in Syria on other business. I met with top British officials, who confessed to me that they were preparing something in Syria.
This was in Britain not in America. Britain was organizing an invasion of rebels into Syria. They even asked me, although I was no longer minister for foreign affairs, if I would like to participate.
Naturally, I refused, I said I’m French, that doesn’t interest me.’’
Dumas went on give the audience a quick lesson on the real reason for the war that has now claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people.
‘’This operation goes way back. It was prepared, preconceived and planned… in the region it is important to know that this Syrian regime has a very anti-Israeli stance.
Consequently, everything that moves in the region- and I have this from the former Israeli prime minister who told me ‘we’ll try to get on with our neighbours but those who don’t agree with us will be destroyed.
