DSPCA renews appeal to public as Christmas present puppy is handed in already

His name is Prancer.

DSPCA HAS RENEWED its appeal to the public not to buy puppies online.

The appeal comes as a puppy intended to be a Christmas present has been handed in to them already.

In a Facebook post, the charity said:

Despite all our warnings here is our first Christmas puppy being handed into the shelter today. Bought online and collected only yesterday from a puppy farm. The excuse ‘he wasn’t getting on with our other dog’. Of course he is not vaccinated or microchipped. People need to be responsible and STOP buying puppies online!

“Thanks to Rachel who runs our fostering department, Prancer has gone to a foster family for Christmas.”

Last month the ISPCA appealed to people not to support puppy farms in the run up to Christmas.

In a statement the ISPCA noted: “Many puppies are bred in appalling conditions, are not vaccinated or microchipped and may be in need of veterinary care.”

The ISPCA notes that pets “never make good Christmas gifts and should never be bought on a whim or given as a surprise”.

Lucky that the little one was handed in rather than the usual practice of abandonment.

It’s not that. It’s just that they don’t care. Dogs are nothing more than toys to be cast away when they’ve become bored of them.

The person who handed in that puppy, is a thick Fu×k! And needs to stop having children so as not to pass on their thick gene to future generations. Do not buy animals as Christmas presents, not a very hard concept to follow!

If after all the exposes and port seizures, you still buy off a puppy farmer, rather than from a pound or an animal charity you’re dirt. The only types who buy from farms are the ones who wouldn’t pass an ISPCA inspection and shouldn’t be given access to animals.

At least the puppys ‘owner’ had the integrity to hand the puppy into the DSPCA. We dont exactly who gave them this “gift’. Unfortunately we ll see a lot of puppies who will be a LOT worse off this xmas. I just dont get how people can be so cruel to such a loving loyal perpetually friendly animal.

We were in there when this happened. He said his brother bought it in Cavan off a man. Their dog didn’t like him ….
The DSPCA asked for a donation, explaining the HUGE cost associated with vaccinations etc. He said his wallet was in the car and never came back ! So upsetting.

@Sian O Sullivan: That said how much of the story he gave was true. Could have gotten the pup himself and then didn’t want it or his dog had the pup and he was dumping it at the dspca. Either was people like him should not be allowed to have animals. that was me gotten the reg and arranged a visit with the warden.

As I sit here with my two rescue dogs it makes me think that people who buy from puppy farms really are the worst sort of people. Especially when they knowingly buy “designer breeds” from these puppy farms. Adopt don’t shop always.

We have two rescued One we ended up buying from a puppy farm just to get him safe. We eventually got them closed down. The condition we got him in was absolutely disgraceful. It cost a lot to get him better but he is the most lovable little imp ever. Don’t support them farms just check one out and you will see the conditions they are left in, so sad

People will never learn. It’s totally irresponsible. Animals have feelings. It’s time that the government did something about animal welfare. Dogs, Cats are family, not to be discarded when owners can’t be bothered.

I’d say fair play to the guy that handed in the puppy. The other dog could have killed it. At least he didn’t ditch it on the side of the road. Unfortunately, people are suckers for puppy’s and they don’t realise the responsibility. That’s the stupidity of some people but it happens and I don’t think this article encourages the stupid people who have made an awful mistake to use the ISPCA or similar when things don’t work out. Nevertheless, there are also responsible breeders online and other sources to get a dog. Not every puppy comes from a horrible farm and not every dog from ISPCA gets rehoused with a responsible owner.
