Here is what's happening around the country to ring in the New Year

Dublin’s three-day festival kicked off today, but there’s plenty more on around the country this weekend.

DUBLIN’S THREE-DAY New Year’s Festival kicks off today.

There’s a plethora of events on around the capital today, from a 3D light show at the Custom’s House from 5pm today to a Poetry Slam on South Anne Street at 6.30pm.

Tomorrow, the countdown to 2017 concert in the 3Arena will be headlined by Walking on Cars.

There’s plenty more on – from gothic horror to sky dancing – that you can read about here.

We’ve lost a lot of musical legends this year, and they’re set to remembered in a special concert in Vicar Street on New Year’s Eve with the Mix Tape NYE Party 2016.

However, New Year’s festivities are not confined to the capital. Venues around the country are set to open their doors to welcome revellers ready to welcome the new year.

Here’s a few of the events elsewhere around the country this weekend to ring in 2017.

Cork

The award-winning musician Mick Flannery is bringing tunes from his upcoming fifth album, I Own You, to the Cork Opera House on New Year’s Eve.

His show kicks off from 8pm tomorrow.

Pubs, clubs and hotels are set to be packed out in the city, to cater for whatever kind of night you fancy.

Galway

There’s plenty on in Galway to appeal to all tastes.

From a Masquerade Ball at the House Hotel, to dance music in the Roisín Dubh, to dinner at the Radisson Blu, there’s lots of ways to welcome 2017.

Limerick

You can take a spin on the enchanted Christmas carriage, which will wind through the city for the last day tomorrow.

A New Year’s Eve fundraising ball to support the Irish Heart Foundation is on in the Savoy Hotel from 7pm.

And, across the city, there is plenty of live music on to kick off 2017 with a bang.

Kerry

For country music enthusiasts, Nathan Carter will play the INEC in Killarney.

He’s had no.1 albums, had his own TV show and has taken the nation by storm. He takes to the stage from 9pm.

While most capital cities lay on free public transport on NYE until the small hours of the morning, Dublin’s bus service ceases at 10pm. There’s no incentive to go into town – no atmosphere, no events to speak of. And RTE contributes with their non-event, boring, cringe worthy schedule. Best gig? Stay at home with nearest & dearest and have BBC on in the background.

The easy nice things in life will continue for the homeless, sick, hungry people. Same as it was last year nothing has changed but in 2017 I expect a general election called for by Finna fail if Sinn Fein get more popular. Happy new year.

“Let’s ring in the new year with a poetry slam!” said no one ever.
